2265.0. "Advice on a Bass Amp purchase" by VSSCAD::GATULIS (Frank Gatulis 226-6140) Sun Jul 21 1991 02:40

    Hi,

I'm looking for some advice for a someone. My son has a Heavy Metal
band (just starting out) and they have a bass player that's been
playing through a borrowed amp. He's in the process of buying an amp
for himself and is interrested in an 80watt Crate he saw in a music
store. It was $350 in the store and the same one is in the Want
Advertiser for $150. He is wondering if:

    - Is 80 watts enough for a reasonable bass setup or is it something
he'll likely be disappointed in after spending the money?

    - Anbody have an +/- comments on Crate?

    Any help graciously appreciated

    Frank

Methinks 80wts ain't going to cut it for Heavy Metal. Not saying the
kid needs a 400wt Peavey, but, knowing Crate, whos amps tend to be a
bit low on the wattage end, I think he should scan the ads for a
Peavy combo in the 200-300wt range...it will go a lot more distance for
the bucks invested. Also, better re-sale value.

What the man said, if they are intending to play out anywhere he
will probably need more watts, a friend of mine has a 100W HH combo
and although it sounds plenty loud enough in a live situation you can
hardly hear the bass....let alone feel it.

Peavey do a nice bass combo rated at about 160/180 watts that should be
    plenty loud enough.

I tend to agree with the previous replies about Peavy.

However, the bassist in my band (I hate saying "my band") uses an 80wt Crate,
and we do some pop-metal stuff. While I don't care for the tone too much,
it's plenty loud on stage. He runs direct to the desk from the "built in"
direct box and out front it sounds ok. $150 is pretty reasonable, me things.

I'd still thing PV combos would be good too.

FWIW, Guido (*our* bassist ;) is now looking at a Trace Elliot or GK800RB
bass rig to play thru. He plugged into both recently, and his eyes bugged
out. Nice tone, BIG bucks.

2265.580 watts - must be a pre-amp??CSC32::B_KNOXLive Free or Die - It's a Threat !!Mon Jul 22 1991 17:408
80 Watts will never cut it live (IMHO). 150-200 watts is passable.
You can always find decent rigs in the Want Ads. GK's and TE's
are bit on the expensive side (although I got my GK for a steal before
they became so popular...). You can always pick up a used PV for
short bucks. They're not great (again, IMHO) but you get what you
    pay for.

As the originitor of .0 I thought I'd say thanks for the help
(both the replies and EMail). We've gone with a Peavy Combo 300
that a fellow noter was selling. Sounds great and everyone is
    pleased.

Can someone give me any info on the Peavy
bass mark III. I saw one at daddy's last night in passing but
didn't want to get involved with a salesman at the time ( I had
three kids with me) I did notice a price of 249.00.

                                                 Thanks in advance
