2140.0. "simple question?" by SCOAYR::SROBERTSON () Thu Mar 14 1991 05:52

Is it possible that a bass guitar can damage an amp if the actives are
turned up full. The shop I bought the guitar says this is impossible and
will not therefore pay to get my amp fixed - I think it did as the amp
ran fine for 18 months until I got this guitar.

What type of amp. are you using, and does it have gain control??

If it's a solid state amp, yes, you can overload the input IC's and/or
transistors. IF it's a tube amp, it's unlikly to happen
because the headroom in the input stage would not be surpassed by most
    any preamp/active electronic bass.

The same goes for pedals, and rack mounted effect units by the way...

It's a Laney PL100 Bass amp and it does have gain but this was only at
3.The actives on the bass was turned fully up.

HMmmmmm...ya might have a bad ic/transistor in the bass. Try turning
them down 1/4 and see if the problem goes away. If it does, it might
just be a bad mix between the 2 instruments. Laney, sorry to say, is
no big deal as far as hi-tech design goes. If it's tube, try &
    replace the 1st stage tube.

I'll look into this a little more tonight, and get back to ya
    when I'm awake.

2140.6Is This A Shaggy Dog Story?IXION::ROSTBoozoo Chavis lookalikeThu Mar 14 1991 14:2817
It's not incredibly likely. With a 9V battery, the maximum signal
swing is +/- 4.5 V if the battery is fresh. More likely to be 3-4
volts flat out. This is hot compared to passive pickups (which are
typically in the 1 volt range) but it would take pretty poor design to
blow an amp based on this, particularly a modern amp.

It *is* possible, as others have pointed out. But so what? If I was
the dealer I would be hard pressed to buy the story that a bass I sold
you blew your amp up. Especially if you want me to pay for the
repairs, heck, the average warranty specifically states that damage
caused to other gear is not covered.

I'd get the amp fixed, find out what went bad first, then maybe go
back to the dealer and see about trading the bass for something else is
it really does seem to be the bass.

ya, always go back to the store with a repair reciept in hand, so
everyone knows where they stand. I too doubt if the bass can
'ruin' the amp. Like I said, some guitars/basses & amps
    do not work well together.

I've had an active axe for 12 years. Full out, the active circuitry
womps a resounding 45 DB bost.. (no lie..) Never had a problem with my 100
yamaha 2-12 combo, and I've had that for 9 years..

(and let me tell ya boys and girls, with the amp in the clean channel, hitting
that pre-amp switch brings buildings down.. Sound men run for cover.)

I think you either had a bogus component (in the amp) in the first place, or
it's an unfortunate coincidence.

It all depends, also, if the axe uses a 741 el-cheapo chip, a higher
tech chip, and/or transistor. I think ya might want to check that
    out too...

    Still trying..

The shop that I bought the bass from has checked out the bass and said
it was okay. They did say though "your bass is fine but don't turn the
actives pass the half way mark",I laughed at this but the guys in the
shop really don't give a **** and said the guys who tell you that a
bass can damage an amp are talking keech - translated - shit.
I must say of all the music shops I have dealt with - about 5 or 6 ,in
this area,SW Scotland, they just want you to buy, get out and don't come
back unless you're buying something else. I get my amp back in a couple
of days so we will see what is actually wrong with the amp.

p.s.is this true that the shop is not responsible for any damage done
to other equipment - a bit of a harsh rule I think!
