2116.0. "amp=dead" by AYOV16::SROBERTSON () Wed Feb 20 1991 12:11

    Can anyone help?

At our practice yesterday my laney pl100 bass amp went dead - well
almost. It was totally distorted with and very low on volume.

I used an active bass for the first time - had gain at 4 and vol at 7
with not too much bottom end.

I have driven the amp much harder with no probs before. It is definatley
the amp as the speaker and bass checked out okay.

I have heard of limiters but as I say I have driven this amp much
harder and do you need to be more careful with actives but surely not
    this careful.

After half an hour I switched it back on and it lasted half an hour
    before cutting out again.

Did you check the battery on the bass ?? If the battery is going bad,
it will exhibit the same symptoms as you described.

2116.2I like them both! Passive AND active!SALEM::ABATELLII don't need no stinkin' BoogieWed Feb 20 1991 19:317
Did you try another bass with it? Troubleshoot one thing at a time.
Active p/u's can be a pain like this... right Bill? ;^) Try an
old guitar using old technology pickups... passive I think they call
them ;^) and see what happens. Good luck cause I really don't think
it's the amp (I'm hopeful ya know?)

I did change the battery the day I used the amp and it was supposedly
a new one - there's an led to show actives are on and this was brighter
with the new battery in.I will try the other one again to make sure
    as it's a heavy duty.

    I did try a passive guitar,not a bass though,and this still had
distortion - so I still think it is something in the amp - though to be
completley happy I will have to get a loan of a passive bass, even
though I can switch off the actives on mine,to run for a good hour to
see it's definatley not the guitar as I said this was the first time I
    had use it in anger.

2116.4tubes or solid stateROCKER::KNOXeither light up or leave me aloneThu Feb 21 1991 13:3510
Stuart, is this bass head solid state or tubes ??

If it's solid state, I'd take it to a reputable electronics repair
shop. If it's tubes, check them out as a possible cause.

Hey Fred , How do you like that bass ?? Did you fix the neck up ??
