Conference napalm::guitar

So this Friday night, in the intro to Be My Baby, my rack goes, ack barf barf
barf...thunk! and emits this really great smelling cloud of smoke! My
quadraverb, is dark and smoking....so I quickly byass the damn thing and run
straight from the triaxis to the power amp, and finish the night that way (two 
songs).

Saturday before we played I pulled it out and opened it up, one of the bypass
caps on a digital chips is black so I clip it and up she comes. I'm thinking
cool, a couple of the programs were wierded out but I fixed those before
showtime...as I'm tuning up to play the fisrt set my rack goes ack, bark bark 
bark and the quad goes dark again...sigh...(no smoke this time)

just one of those great nights!

So I'm picking and grinning while Andy proceeds to break a string on both
guitars before the first set is done...

ya know the quattro/intellifex/patch bayette/rivera rack....

the one I'm using now...the quad and my triaxis ship out to their respective
manufacturers today. The quad for repairs ($55 fixed fee) and the triaxis for
an adjustment of the LVR whatever that is...and a software upgrade...

	Well I bought the CD with BBM (Baker, Bruce & Moore), and I'm
	disappointed bigtime! I thought two out of three, can't go
	wrong and I had the old Cream sound in my ears when I bought
	it - I only listened to a couple of songs in the store and
	thought it sounded OK. First, Ginger Baker is shot. No fire
	anymore, he just keeps the pace and he only uses one bass
	drum now - I think he cannot manage to do the double bass
	drum trick anymore (he's more than 60?)..

	But even worse: Gary Moore. He just overplays everything in
	a wild minor pentatonic race in an endless getting nowhere.
	He just hasn't got anything to say! Geez in old days Clapton
	used to compose every solo in Cream - I can still recall every
	note of the solo in 'Sunshine Of Your Love'...

	Gary Moore obviously tries to duplicate EC on this CD. He uses
	the well known pull-off/hammer-on EC trademark all the time, he
	even tries to copy his sound from the Cream days- but he is no
	EC - he is nothing. I can find his sort of talent in the first
	20 bars in the streets of Copenhagen any time! He can't even
	sing!

	Flame off, I'm just disappointed. But never ever will I buy a
	CD with Gary Moore's name somewhere on the cover!

    I happen to be aquainted with Bill Ludwig III, heir to Ludgwig
    Industries. He's a fairly close friend of Ginger's (as well as just
    about anyone else that ever used Ludwig drums) and told me a few years
    back that Ginger owns an olive farm in Italy where he now lives and
    -- are you ready -- doesn't own a set of drums.

    Every time Baker come to the US, he calls Bill who fixes him up a kit to
    use while here. Bill, who used to run the endorser program for Ludwig
    and now works as a consultant (his family sold the company to Selmer
    around 1982), has some wild stories to tell of Baker being out of
    control during those Ludwig endorser photo shoots back in the 70s.

    I recently sent Fender 2 bucks, s/h, for their latest pr material. I
    know, I know, money wasted, wrong. I got an oversized, big, envelope
    stuffed with great things. It included a great poster of Tele's and
    Strats from the past 40 years. Also, a catalog of all the AMPS that
    Fender is offering from new to reissue to metal bangers, this in itself
    was worth the 2 bucks.
    
    Sooooooo send da mooooooney in to Fender and get ready to sit back and
    want, want, want.

Actually, I think the place to spring a lot of those quotes would've have
been in the old Blues vs. Progressive.

I think the main thing there was thing about how he appreciates the
"direct" stuff, but can't understand why anyone would lash out AGAINST
someone who also seeks to advance their technique.

I think what he's getting at is this:
    
    The debate often seems to between folks who criticize bands like Blind
    Melon for not exhibiting ENOUGH technique, and other folks (like BLind
    Melon) who criticize others for exhibiting too much technique.

    I think what Morse is saying is that BOTH these attitudes are screwed
    up.  You don't judge music based on how much NOR how little technique
    was involved.
    
    So I think what Morse would tell you is that if you reject Blind Melon
    (for example) because they don't have good technique, you've got the
    wrong attitude.
    
    Likewise, if you reject Morse because his stuff exhibits a lot of
    flashy technique, you've got the wrong attitude.
    
    On the other hand, if you reject Satriani... you've DEFINITELY got
    the right attitude.  

    
         I glanced over the Steve Morse article in the
    music store the other day.  I read something about
    Steve using a guitar with SIX outputs, one for each

    Steve has an acoustic where each string has its own output.
    
    He is prone to doing some radical panning things such that a solo
    jumps all over the place from left to right.   Since "High Tension
    Wires" seems to be the most popular album in here, I think he does
    it on the solo for "Third Power" (not sure if that's the right title).

    that's a common technique for people that can't play with emotion. 
    They try to confuse you and space you out by changing channels all the
    time.  Works great on those ancient tribute cover tours in 3rd World
    countries.

Somehow the latent propellor-head in me is struggling to get out, and I'm
forced to point out that the CLEAR NODE and PURGE NODE aren't really 
necessary (although they won't hurt either).

There *is* one other case that can happen, though, especially when your
node database gets maintained infrequently.  Sometimes the new node number
is still assigned to and obsolete node name.  Let's say for example that
your node database has node FOO assigned to node number 1.2, but it really
should be assigned to 3.4.  But you can't change it directly, 'cause there
used to be a node called BAR assigned to 3.4, and it's still that way in your
local database.  In that case you would have to do:

    $ MCR NCP
    NCP> CLEAR NODE 3.4 ALL
    NCP> PURGE NODE 3.4 ALL
    NCP> DEFINE NODE FOO ADDR 3.4
    NCP> SET NODE FOO ALL
    NCP> EXIT

I think I've seen it called E7#9.  An E9, in your notation, would be 076770.

    That depends on where you are.  The person with the question was noting
    from a node that I believe is in the UK, where prices are significantly
    higher then here in the US.  
    
    Besides...I think this price range is a little low anyway.  That was
    true a few years ago, but it seems like the older USA made (pre
    "American Standard") Strats seem to be commanding better prices these
    days and the prices are all over the map too.  I'd say $350-550, maybe
    more.

    I picked up an audio timer at the fleas last week that I would like
    to rack-mount. The rack ears on my Tascam patch bay would fit

If the unit isn't too thick you might be able to mount it to a rack shelf,
which is easy to find.  Doesn't always work, though.  Sometimes the result is
a bit too thick for one rack space.

    First, go talk to your network guys.  They generally have TONS of
    rack goodies that they throw away on a daily basis.  They have shelves,
    racks, EARS (DS200 ears can be cut to do one space), screws, clips,
    blanks, etc...
    
    I picked up two scrap 'racks' for my studio of the 20space variety.
    Wrote 'em as scrap and took 'em home and filled 'em up.  Sturdy,
    rugged, and all that, plus they look pretty good.  I think mine
    used to house RM80 disks or something.  The boss had no problem
    with signing the property pass 'never to be returned'.  They were 
    gonna heave 'em anyway.

yeah I've been working on my boss for one, but what they want to do instead is
give me a PRP and then just never ask for them back, of course if we got sold,
TSFo'd or I just finally gave up on DEC and left I'd have to return it. So I'm
still pushing the scrap idea.

    the other night and caught the band Bloodlines on TV (Conan, I think).
    It's Robby Krieger's son on guitar, Berry Oakley's son on bass (and
    playing his dad's old J-bass too), Miles Davis' son on drums and
    Smokin Joe ?????? on lead (who's father isn't anybody I guess).
    
    They were fun; lotsa energy (ah to be young again), and Smokin Joe
    played a mean Strat.  I think they hit the Paradise in Boston recently.

Last weekend St Amand played out in what is one of the nicer clubs we've been to
so far. Nice stage, dance floor, house lights etc. well we were getting down
running about acting like typical rock fools and Andy (our other guitarist) took 
a leap off the stage and tore his achilles tendon...he finished the last set
and a half sitting down, and wasn;t too uncomfortable. Now he's off to surgery
today or tomorrow...and of course, we have a big gig this weekend...

The only real surprise to me was that it was Andy and not me that got injured.

So guys be careful out there!

Another personal favorite:

A guitarist dies and goes to heaven.  There he is greet at the pearly gates
by St. Peter, who says, "Oh, you're going to love it here.   We have 
Marshall stacks in all the practice rooms, every guitar you can imagine and
we have jam sessions every night until four a.m.  Everybody's here: Jimi,
Stevie Ray, Duanne,...  You'll love it here".  The guitar replies: "That
sounds great but tell me, is Steve Morse here?"

St. Peter hesitates and reluctantly answer: "No, I am afraid that Steve
Morse didn't make it up here.   But you must be tired so check into your
practice room and I'll see you later."

So the guitarist finds his way to the practice room and begins unpacking.
From the next room he hears the familiar strains of a progressive rock
guitarist.

As he listens more closely, he realizes that it sounds exactly
like Steve Morse.  He walks back to St. Peter and says "I thought you
said Steve Morse wasn't here."   St. Peter replies "That's correct,
he isn't."

The guitarist shrugs and returns to him room again.  Again he hears
the incredible cross-picked lines, wide vibrato, pinched harmonics, 
chicken pickin, and lightning fast riffs.   He even hears the signature
lick to "Tumeni Notes".   Bewildered, he goes back to St. Peter.  "Look,
I know I heard Morse in the next room," he insists.  "If that's not
Morse in the next room, then who is it?"

St. Peter glances around, making sure no one else is listening and
then pulls the guitarist close and says under his breath, "The guy
in the next room?  It's not Morse... it's God.  He just THINKS he's
Steve Morse.

Yo, db, that's the *best* Morse joke I've ever read! Um, well, yeah, it's the
*only* Morse joke I've ever seen, sure, but...

    This just in from former DECCIE, noter, and unrepentant blueser

    Remember that note in guitar notes from the guy whose fingers turned
    black ever time he played his knew guitar?  People were telling him
    things like "it's the kind of strings you're using", etc.  Well, I've
    been playing my Tele a lot lately.  Sunday morning I used some hand
    lotion for the first time this year.  A couple hours later I pick up
    the Tele and played for about an hour.  When I was done...I had ***black
    finger tips***, well, very dark gray anyway.  I've never gotten black
    fingers from my strings like that before.  A teensy bit gray --- maybe.
    I wouldn't venture to guess what the chemistry behind it is, but it
    would appear that something in the hand lotion caused oxidation.
     

    That's interesting.  If it's doing that to your fingers, it's probably
    also decreasing your string life pretty severely!

	Well the guy with the black fingers was me! I was playing my
	new Am. Std. strat with rosewood fretboard, and appearently it
	was treated with SOMETHING that slowly disappeared after some
	weeks of playing time. My fingers were BLACK as COAL! And it
	wasn't the strings, I used the same set as always, tried to put
	on a new set anyway, still black fingers. And I always wash my
	hands with normal soap before playing, I should add...

	Before I put on the new strings, I used a soft cloth to rub off
	most of the stuff from the fretboard, but the warmth of the
	fingertips I guess still picked some up. Strange!

Hi, I'm Eric Bell of Howling Dog Systems, here in Canada.

I picked up the first issue of 'Total Guitar' the other day. Cost me 2 1/2
times what a typical music mag does. I didn't care. I was blown away. What an
incredible magazine you've produced!

We've been hounding electronic music and keyboard oriented mags as well as
Guitar mags on this side of the pond to include CDs with their publications
but here in North America they can't seem to figure out how to do it and still
make money. But I think they are really missing the point.

I mean, you can write and write and write about gear, take pictures, etc. but
nothing can replace even a few seconds of *hearing* what its all about.

The value of your magazine easily surpasses the cover price, for just the
Overdrive pedal comparison alone. At last I got to hear all of those different
pedals in one fell swoop!  In fact, we sat around and did a taste test,
quickly rating each one and comparing with your ratings. It was fun!

I've already spent more time with your magazine than with other typical music
magazines, and this bodes well for advertisers. I've listened to the CD
straight thru, and now I'm listening to each section as I go thru the
articles. This is a winning combination.

And your article / examples of Hendrix style playing pointed out a few things
that hadn't really 'jelled' in spite of the amount of time I've spent
listening to him. Like that bend up a fourth. It's so Hendrix, but I never
quite twigged. And the sound of those two string bends... have to add those to
my repertoire!

Anyway, you'll never keep it up. How can you possibly go on providing this
level of detail, and value, every month? Impossible! But I hope you'll try.

    I read this with great interest, but was just too busy to find the time
    to reply before Christmas. I might well try and pick up a copy next
    time I'm back in the UK, although I do think that the price is a bit
    too hefty to make me want to take out a subscription.
    
    Funny how no one has come up with the idea of CD demos before; I guess
    the soundcards in Guitar Player are about the nearest thing we've seen
    up to now. I don't know about you guys, but the sensation I usually get
    when reading equipment reviews in guitar magazines is pretty much the
    same as I get when reading the labels on wine bottles: on the one hand,
    you've got adjectives like "warm", "crunchy" and "ballsy", while on the
    other you've got "earthy", "impertinent" and "vivacious" ;-) Fact is, I
    tend to find that you might as well skip the reviewer's personal
    judgements on the sound of a particular amp, so the specifications are
    the only part of the review that's any real use. Well, maybe all that
    has changed...
    
    Not that it'll suddenly make me curious about the sound or the latest
    rack-mounted effects units...;-)

    Other than that, about the only useful thing to do there is check out
    the pawn shops...
    

    I don't know if you're into C&W at all, but there's a great house band
    at Mr Lucky's (I think it's near Grand & Indian School Rd).  They are 
    very talented and play a good variety considering they're the house
    band at a HUGE C&W bar.  They did a pretty good rendition of Little
    Miss Can't Be Wrong the last time I was there.

    pair of Peavey speakers that don't sound bad, so he's looking for an
    amp-only solution, either self-contained or separate modules.
    
    I'm thinking of the Roland JC-120H, the head only version.  Any other

    Could someone give me some brief instructions on how to access the
    WWW. I've used mosaic, but I'm not sure what path I need to use
    or how to get outside of Digital's web.

   Just bring up Mosaic, pull down the File menu, select then "Open URL..."
   item, and you'll get a dialog box asking for the URL you want to access.
   Enter it, press "Open" and it'll go get it for you.  There's no specific
   trick to get "out on the Web".

   I've tried twice now (over two days) to get to the Gibson server, and it
   won't open it...

	I wonder if some of you guys from the US could help me here -
	and this has nothing what so ever to do with guitars - but a
	while back, I read about some city in USA, where the rich,
	employed people live under earth, they have built streets
	and shopping centres under earth and can go direct from 
	their work to home without going 'upstairs' into the streets.
	The poor ones live in the streets, and are not permitted to
	enter the life below the surface, guards are protecting the
	entrancies. As soon as one of the rich goes out into streets,
	the risc for attack and robbery is enormous.

	My colleagues didn't believe what I was telling! And I'm sure
	I read a *serious* article somewhere about this, but I forgot
	the name of the city...

    Well, this fabled city sounds like Montreal except for a few slight
    differences. I don't think there is much if any underground housing. I
    never saw any guards controlling who went underground. And even though
    my car stereo got ripped off, I would hardly say the place was
    high-risk for attack and robbery.
    
    The real danger when leaving the underground malls for the streets is
    freezing your face off -- but that's only true 11 months out of the
    year.

    Yes, this is our first child.  As far as the name, he is named
    after his father and grandfather, not the actor (and certainly not
    the purveyor of pure pork sausage), but it certainly has a nice
    ring to it...
    
    Haven't played him any MegaDeath yet, but my wife has been playing
    him lots of Bach and Mozart for months (even before birth): she's
    hoping for a violinist.  That's fine with me: I've always wanted
    an excuse to buy a fiddle.  But if he wants to play guitar, drums,
    or piano, we're already covered (but then again, he probably would
    really need his *own* guitar).
    
    Then again, maybe he'll turn out to be a drummer.  Melanie (my
    wife) and I met in high school band: we were both in the percussion
    section.  When she bought a drum set, she asked me to come over to
    her house to help her set it up and tune it.  We still have that
    drum set (actually it's quite nice: a seven-piece Rogers memory-lock
    set).

    Now that I'm in the market for some new gear, and seeing
    how this year's NAMM show has passed, can anyone list some
    of the new products for 95?

    Well, I sold a Marshall top (jcm900) anna pair of 4x12s.  I too am in 
    the market for new toize  (recall my queries regarding my building the
    "ultimate" rig).
    
    Anyway, my first stop will be to purchase a Marsall JMP-1 - simply
    the most straight-ahead MIDI preamp I've ever heard/played with.
    It does the clean/compressed thing, the Fender clean and the Marshall
    clean, plus it does JCM900 style crunchies, AND the famous ADA
    "Screamin' metal" tone that we've all grown to 'love'.  :-)
    All this, and its super simple:  Gain, Volume, bass-mid-treb-pres,
    anna gift "Bass Boost".  100 storage slots.
    
    FWIW, I like the Mp2, but it's got just too damn many functions - 
    MIDI, real-time MIDI, Ten voices, two EQ's, enveloping, chorusing,
    gating, N/R...  I like to edit TOO much to enjoy PLAYING with this.
    
    Anyway, to round it out, I'm still on the prowl for:
    
    - All-tube power amp (Marshall 9100, Mesa 2:90, ??)
    - Multi-FX from hell (but simple) LXP-15, IntelliFex, TSR-24??)
    - One pair of Boogie Dual-Rectum Frier(tm) cabs with armour.
    
    FWIW - I played the JMP-1 thru a Marshall 9100 amp (all tube, 50wpc,
    two spacer).  That thing LOUD (like marshall, I_NEED_DENTAL_WORK_NOW 
    loud).  What a screamin' tone too.  I easily dialed in several JCM900
    type tones, plus all my other favorites.  
    
    I'm pretty excited.

Can anyone out there give me an idea of the current market value of

Thanks!  I've been watching for the Used Gear Price List, but I haven't seen

I *am* snagging it, I just don't know how much to pay him! :-)

The guy I'm getting it from is blind, and he's found that the SDE-1000
relies to much on the LCD display, and thus is hard for him to use.
I'm swapping him an Alesis Microverb for it.  The Microverb is pretty
much just four knobs, so it's easy for him to handle.  I think the
SDE-1000 is probably worth more, though, and I don't want to rip the
guy off.

BTW, I was wondering how he could determine levels on his mixer...it turns
out he's got a gadget with a light-sensitive probe that he can use to
tell which LEDs are lit.  It makes a wierd noise when it detects light.
Pretty amazing!

    Look at it this way - 
    
    Where can you go and buy a brand new, rackmount, good quality ddl?
    You can't.  Period.  SDE series goodies are worth their weight in 
    gold to use sonic weenies.

    RepliFex - It has everything a guitarist could want plus great sonic
    quality and smooth transitions between patches. The new Rocktron
    catalog will run you three bucks but it's got a lot of guitar gear to

   Funny you should ask that...

   Just yesterday I received Jerry White's Jasmine *6* string via UPS (yes,
   I bought it  :-)).  As for "bang for the buck" you couldn't ask for more,
   IMO.  I've been looking at electric/acoustics for 6 months, and this was
   the best deal around.  I still haven't been able to locate the laminate
   lines on the (allegedly) plywood top.

   I paid $240, including shipping, for the 6 string, elec./acoustic with
   cutaway.  Definitely worth every penny.  Given that, I would hazard a 
   guess that the 12 string would also be a decent value.  Also, keep in
   mind that even if it is a plywood top, this could be an advantage with
   a 12 (less top warping, etc).  Especially if you plan to use it "plugged
   in", where you can EQ it to death.

   (My 12 is an Alvarez, BTW.)

    I have a Peavey Console... now, pick yourself up off the floor
    and stop laughing.
    
    It's called a Peavey Mark VIII and I have it in the 36 x 8 x 2
    configuration.
    
    It was originally intended as a live sound board, but of the
    highest professional quality. It has 8 subs, 8 sends on each
    channel, 4 band semi-parametric EQ, balanced line and mic
    inputs on every channel, full foldback (probably better than
    most studio consoles considering its intended application),
    excellent (professional quality) noise specs all around,
    extensive patching capabilities, and with the addition of
    an outboard unit, VCA automation to SMPTE TC on the masters
    and the subs. About the only thing it lacks is the "inline"
    configuration of most present day studio consoles.
    
    However, that's not a problem. I put my tape returns (from
    my Tascam DA88s) through the first 24 channels, and I use
    the remaining 12 channels as my tape sends. I rarely need
    more than 12 channels of input at a time, especially since
    I also have professional outboard mic pres and EQs.
    
    This console is quite large and impressive looking, not
    to mention great sounding. It lists for well over $10,000
    new, and at that price, it is a bargain. I bought it for
    $6000 because they couldn't find a home for it...
    
    I'm very happy with this console, and everyone that has
    come into the studio has thought it performed great.

    Thing that amazes me about Mackies stuff is the nearly un-limited
    signal routing options on it.  Triple bussed subs, aux-sends out
    the whaazoo, stereo fx rtns, multiple can-mixes, talkback,
    EVERYTHING....And affordable.  Plus the (still vaporware) VCA
    automation...
    
    Oh - And the new Tascam M2600 is sharp too  - Same kinda options.
    $2500.  Hmmmmmmm....

    I can attest that Brian's PV board, as well as the Yamaha in the same
    config, are both excellent boards!

    Playing country country music can be fun.  The band I'm in opened up
    for John Anderson ("swinging") in Macon GA, at the "Cherry Blossem
    Festivle Street Party".  What an awesome stage.  We used Travis Tritt's
    sound system and crew.  The sound was great.  On the R&R stage, next
    street over, was 38 Special and that Trucks kid.  We didn't get to hang
    around cause we had to get to the club to play, boy did the sound sux
    after that experience.

    and (2) Fender SUper-somethings... all into a pair of 4x12's.  He had a
    Lexicon PCM70 and a bunch of stomps too.  Man, it was LOUDER than

Hey, since you're into vintage archtops, you really ought to go whole
hog with the other hobby and get a view camera.  PTS can be just as 
rewarding as GTS. :-)

    I actually sat in on a free ukelele class just so I could play a
    fretted instrument for an hour. I had planned to visit a couple of
    guitar makers on Maui (Steve Grimes and Rainsong) but just never got
    around to it. Something about Hawaii Time...
    
    Ektachrome Lumiere is named for the inventor. Fujichrome Velvia is
    named for a cheese-like substance. What's your point? :-)
    
    Anyone who hangs out in the Photo conference can tell you that I
    already have enough equipment. Unlike vintage guitars, vintage cameras
    have little to offer today's photographer except the fun of handling
    nicely-machined metal--improvements in technology make modern cameras
    perform better in every respect, from optics, to shutters, to metering
    to film handling. About the only real improvement in archtops in the
    last 35 years is better tuning pegs.

    Yes, I've told my wife about Dr. Weber, but she doesn't believe he
    exists.  She finds it hard to believe that someone could actually 
    have more guitars AND more camera equipment than I do.  But to the
    best of my knowledge, I have more astronomy stuff (at least I've never
    noticed Danny hanging out in astronomy). 
    
    Between GTS, PTS, and ATS, (not to mention a new baby) I never lack 
    for opportunities to spend money...

    The problem with astronomy as a hobby where I live is that when it is
    not too cold the cloud of mosquitos ruins the view. Judy won't let me
    add an ED glass dome to the house, so you got me on that one, Jim.
    
    Considering that we mostly shopped and hung out at the beach, it's hard
    for me to figure out how I shot 40 rolls of film--it's not like we went
    anywhere new. I'm starting to run out of shoe boxes, not to mention
    closets.
    
    On the other hand, I didn't buy a single guitar the whole month, so we
    came out ahead :-)

    This string has got me thinking about photography as it relates to 
    vintage guitars. Perhaps someone can tell me why 90% of the photos 
    I see of vintage guitars have wrinkled drop-cloths as backdrops. 
    Surely there are better backgrounds that can be used without distracting 
    from the instrument. My favorite pictures of guitars are in Mac Yasuda's 
    book (The Vintage guitar). In Mac's book, the guitars are photographed 
    in beautiful settings such as lush gardens, fountains, with vintage cars, 
    etc. 
    
    My wife and I enjoy photography too, but we like simlicity. We use
    a Pentax Auto focus camera with a 135mm power zoom built-in. We don't
    have to focus, set exposures, or remember to set the right film speed.
    It also has a built-in winder.  We also have a Sony 8mm camcorder that 
    we use a lot, mainly for taking pictures of the kids.
    
    Last fall, we wanted to take pictures of my son's soccer team. A friend 
    of mine insisted I use his SLR. I wasn't familiar with the camera and 
    ended up having to reshoot all the pictures with my own camera. I was 
    focusing on the wrong field and ended up with blurry children with nice 
    crisp trees in the background. #^)

    For me, the nicest photos of vintage axes are those done by John Peden.
    He did the original run of centerfolds in Guitar World back when it was
    still a decent rag, and many of these are classics and have been reproduced
    elsewhere many times (in a couple of calendars, for instance).  To my
    recollection, John never used wrinkled drop cloths (well, maybe once
    :-).  His backgrounds were always interesting and well thought out; one
    of my favorites was the trio of 50's Les Paul TVs surrounding an ancient
    50's era television set showing a classic scene from the "The Fly".
    
    John also seems particularly adept at lighting; his photos show lots
    of texture and detail, like you could reach out and touch them, and at
    the same time they always achieve a flattering glow.  This is the one
    area where imo a lot of vintage guitar photography comes up short.  I'm
    reminded in particular of the photos of his collection that John Entwistle
    had done, some of which were featured in GP way back when.  I'm sure he
    paid a lot of money for those (they "looked" expensive) but imo the
    instruments were darkly lit and often had shadows obscuring detail.
    Not my cup of tea.

    Some impressions of recent releases, courtesy of former guitar noter
    Ron Burati (and the Internet):
    
    
    Last night I finally found a copy of Relentless by Danny Gatton and Joey
    DeFranscesco. DeFranscesco just blows me away, more so than Gatton. I've
    heard Gatton do all that flashy, showy stuff before and frankly I get
    weary of kinda fast. I really feel that he ignores content in favor of
    quantity. It's that sense that someone's spinning their tires instead of
    going somewhere. Also Danny descends into some rather bizarre sounding
    stuff a few times and I could help but wonder what was going through the
    minds of his session mates...I mean in one spot he almost sounds like
    he's playing a 1966 Pete Townsend chord thing during a solo in a blues?!
    Thankfully, he comes back to earth pretty quickly. Much more of that and
    I'd bet that the track wouldn't have made it to vinyl (or aluminum). But
    in fairness, he does treat us to some nice moments of jazz guitar too.

    DeFranscesco's Hammond just smolders and burns on those tracks, though.
    Real glad I bought it. I have two other albums by JD, and he doesn't
    cook as much on those. Also, on those other albums he plays near-B3s,
    not real ones. An XB2 on one and an XB5 on the other I think. They just
    don't spit and scream like a real one and this record proves it! Here
    Joey shows that he really is a monster on the B3. He not only has an
    arsenal of chops, but he somehow at the tender age of 23 has acquired
    the finesse of the great Hammond jazz players like Jimmy Smith, Brother
    Jack McDuff, and Jimmy McGriff. It's his phrasing that puts him over the
    top, though at one point he spends 4 bars showing us just how far he can
    go before he red-lines. Scary stuff.

    I also picked up Robert Cray's new CD and a 1993 Sonny Landreth CD on
    Epic. A quick listening to the former indicates that Cray is still up to
    finding new ways to express his own brand of blues. Sounds fine but I
    need to sit down and listen more. I buy Robert Cray albums on principle
    anyway, because I want Robert and his Mercury to keep it up.

    The Landreth CD is odd. A disclaimer states that it contains some
    previously released material so it sounds like a record deal dun-gone
    bad and Epic owned the rights to these recordings and pulled the trigger
    based on the mild critical success of the new South of I-10 (which is on
    a different label).

    I reluctantly passed over Smokin Joe Kubeck's new release. I heard a
    tune off this on a blues radio show a few weeks back and it came right
    out my car radio's speakers and smacked me upside the head. Good stuff.
    I was sold on him after hearing him on one track of "B-3 Blues and Other
    Grooves" by Ron Levy's Wild Kingdom. his playing is a jewel in this
    otherwise mediocre album.

Man marries guitar; wife thinks he's crazy 

LONDON -- A British man, besotted for 35 years, has finally "married" the
object of his desire -- his guitar.

Chris Black, 53, says he fell for his Fender Stratocaster the moment he
saw it. "We've had such a long engagement that I decided it was time we
did the decent thing," Black said.

Black asked a friend to perform the wedding ceremony last weekend after a
local vicar refused to do it.

"It was all over in a matter of minutes. We didn't even have time for a
honeymoon," Black told the UK News news agency.

Not surprisingly his wife of 29 years, Janet, is less than impressed. "My
wife thinks I'm crazy," said Black who is unrepentant. "When I die, I
want to be buried with it."

    
    I'm just waiting for them to describe how he consumated the
    marriage, and if he found the "jack" to be adequately large
    for his equipment...
    
    I also wonder if the interpretation of "besot" that applies
    here relates to meaning #1 or #2 (as taken from the Merriam

This is my last week with DEC. I didn't want to leave without 
saying thank you to everyone in here for all the info, entertainment, 
and of course, music.

I've been reading guitarnotes since it's inception, and it's been a real 
pleasure hearing everyone's music on the guitarnotes tapes. I'm glad I
got the chance to meet some of you too. 

Keep up the good work. There's some very talented people in here.

    I popped into Acton Music on Monday. They are blowing out Ovations at ~50% 
    off list (STD Balladeer $449.00, list is $900+), didn't see any Tak's 
    though. 
    
    Daddy's is also dealing on Ovations STD Balladeer around $550.00 but 
    that price includes the hardshell case. I'm told Kamen changed the
    preamp and electronics between the 1994 and 1995 models, so these
    'blowout' prices are probably on mostly '94 models.
    
    BTW: Acton Music had (on Monday) both the 1994 and 1995 Collectors 
    models. The 1994 (list $1,695 on sale for $849) has the built in tuner.
    Don't know what special goodies the '95 has ($1,899 list on sale for $999).
    Unfortunately neither of these guitars visually appealed to me...

	Well talk about excitement! I just got a phonecall from my
	friend, who runs a music store; he told that Mr. Robben Ford
	is coming to Denmark to make three concerts here - and he's
	gonna borrow MY amp! He claimed he HAD to play through a 
	Fender 'The Twin', and since my friend had none in the store
	for the moment, he promised to ask me if the big man himself
	could borrow it - and he would pay to rent it, of course.
	On top of this, I'm offered free entrance at all three events
	(July 7/8/9)...

	Now, humble me, I'm not used rubbin' elbows with the big names,
	but I'm certainly gonna ask him about how he sets the controls
	on the amp and so on, he'll have to learn me a few tricks - and
	be sure I'll make a report here! He'll offer me a rent about
	$130 for the three days, I can't really decide if I should play
	'Mr. Nice Guy' and refuse to take the money...hmmm...

    Poul, thats too cool!  I dream about John Petrucci needing to borrow
    my marshall goodies and throwing in some lessons ...  Course, Petrucci 
    is a Boogie guy...

    When Robben does these clinic visits, it's typically as a paid
    representative for Fender.  As such, it is in everyone's interest that
    he demo Fender products.  We saw him do a clinic a couple of years
    ago at the new EU in Boston, and he was using a "The Twin".
    
    Poul, be sure to ask him to tell some Miles Davis stories; he's got

    different power rating in Europe(220-240)and I believe the frequency is

    Are you making a career change into the elder-care industry?

    I thought there was a note in here regarding the Melobar. There may be,
    but I can't find it anywhere.
    
    I have an opportunity to trade an instrument for a Melobar. For those
    unfamilar, the Melobar is a stand-up steel, basically a lap steel that
    can be played standing up. To facilitate this, the Melobar has a solid
    body with the neck attached at a very radical angle. You play it
    standing up with your hand over the neck (the opposite from normal
    playing technique). The Melobar was invented by a guy named Walt Smith.
    Walt died in 1990, but his son has continued the company and is still
    making these. I believe that Rusty Young (of Poco semi-fame) had
    something to do with designing this unusual instrument. David Lindley
    (Jackson Browne) has also been known to use one. 
    
    There are currently 2 offerings. One has a Flying V body, and the other
    has a less radical body shape. The one I'm looking at is white and has
    one EMG Select single-coil pickup. 
    
    Anyone have any comments on Melobars? I'd like to get an idea of what
    these things are worth. The one I'm looking at is from a dealer who
    claims it's brand-new, but I believe this instrument has been hanging
    around his back-room for some time. It has a couple of minor scrathes.
    I have the option of trading or making a cash offer. I would prefer
    to make a low-ball cash offer on it.

	Well, things went different that I thought when Robben Ford
	played on my amp - two of the concerts were out of my reach,
	then I went to the final one; and it was so crowded that I
	had no chances to speak to the man himself :-(. But at least
	I got some nice photos! He also had another 'The Twin' on
	stage, with a brighter front cloth - but I could see he used
	mine, because the red LED shifted when he switched channels...
	so he indeed used the lead channel as distortion effect..

	After I got the amp back (and the money :-), I noticed the
	positions of the knobs - surprisingly, all of them, on both
	channels, were close to the mid position (also the volume
	knobs =8-| !). If I play it that way, the amp appears somewhat
	dead to me, except for the volume! (well I'm no Robben Ford ;-)..

	The playing was superb, but honestly, a bit boring, I don't
	think he sweats enough - also something has to be unique when
	you only have a three piece band - the variations are limited
	then, and the normal blues playing gets boring to me after a
	while (no no, don't start that discussion again ;-).

    I have to agree Poul, in that I've always found Robben Ford a bit on
    the boring side. I mean, he's obviously got the chops, but I always
    feel his music sounds pretty lifeless; perhaps it's because the
    compositions themselves aren't up to much either, IMO. A far cry from,
    say, Robert Cray.
    
    No, give me Peter Green or Freddie King every time over Robben Ford or
    SRV.

    You wanna hear a jazzer playing great blues go to a Larry Carlton
    concert.  He does one blues song every show.   A classic lesson
    in under-statement:  if he did a whole show of just-blues I'd probably
    be bored, but because it's just one song, it's "special" and often
    the highlight of the evening.
    
    He did a great duet with B.B. King on the "Friends" album called
    "Blues for TJ".

    picture of a custom (and very nice looking) 8-string.  Yes, 
    an 8-string guitar.  I think these things come in at the mid

    Now I thought Bartolini's were primarily bass pickups, but here
    they are on this Conklin.

    Time for a brain drain --
    
    Anyone remember the "Moonstone" guitar and bass line??  I forget who
    marketed them ... Morley possibly?!?  They featured the same
    electronics as found in Alembic guitars, and were all fancied up with
    brass hardware and custom birdseye maple bodies and the whole works!!
    
    They were pretty heafty for the time, too -- think the guitar was
    running around $1,800+ dollars (which is cake these days for an axe).
    
    Anyone remember these things, and more imp, anyone ever SEEN one?!?

    I remember looking at one in Mr. C's around 1984. He had a 
    Moonstone catalog. They even had semi-hollowbody guitars.

    Only seen them in pictures; they show up on used/vintage lists
    occasionally and typically list for between $1k and $2k.  I've
    seen more basses than guitars listed.
    
    The wood on these is described as "burled"; it's a very heavy intense
    birdseye pattern.  I always thought this was a natural occurence (like
    flame and birdseye) but perhaps burling involves some man-made
    processing as well?  It's so intense it kind of looks artificial.
    Any wood-gurus know?

    I had a Moonstone M-80, which was a small (15") semi. It was intensly
    quilted, but it looked better than it played or sounded and I did not
    keep it.
    
    They also made Alembic and LP Jr. knock-offs and even some flattops!
    
    
    Burled wood comes from the tree crotch. It's eye-catching, but not
    necessarily a good tone wood--however, Moonstones were made during the
    "denser & heavier is better" period of guitar-making insanity.
    
    The company was not in business long. I have their catalogs and even a
    poster.

    A burl is a big bump on the tree, like a branch was going to grow and
    changed its mind.  The grain is intense.  My brother-in-law and I took
    one in to a shop that sold log splitters and would give $50.00 if
    their splitter wouldn't split any log.  When we walked out the guy 
    was banging on the burl with a sledge trying to get it off of his
    splitter blade and we had $50.

    The LPB-1??? -- I still own one, though I probably haven't plugged
    it in  for over 15 years.  I used to get some pretty mean distortion 
    running my Kay strat clone through my Linear Power Booster into my

    I remember all of them, with varying degrees of fondness. On
    the low end of the fondness scale I would place the Heil talk
    box; thanks, in large part, to Peter Frampton and Joe Walsh.

    The Avatar (made by the now defunct Arp, BTW) sure was a
    finicky piece of gear; perhaps surpassed only by the
    Mellotron for sheer -- almost breathtaking -- unreliability.

    Anyone else notice a drastic change in the way your guitar feels
    now that the drier air is here? I guess the rosewood was sucking
    up water from the air all summer, causing it to expand slightly 
    and straighten out the neck. There's a LOT more relief than 
    there was 2 weeks ago! Makes me want to get one of those 
    graphite polymer high tech necks.

    I know; I'm just surprised how much shifting has occurred in a 
    short time period. I like the winter; instruments are in a more
    controlled climate.

    This may be true, but in homes that have electric heat, forced hot
    air, or a wood/coal stove, the air tends to dry out so much in winter
    that instruments can crack. This is a lot more serious than too
    much moisture which won't crack an instrument, but it will cause
    the neck and soundboard to move around a bit.
    
    I have had more problems associated with dryness this year than
    ever. So much so that I have started using humidifiers with all
    of my acoustics. One of the reasons I had a problem is that my
    instruments are kept out in the open on hooks or stands. If they
    were kept in the cases, this would be less of a concern.

    As far as I'm concerned, the benefits of wood far outweigh its
    disadvantages.  But I'm mostly an acoustic kind of guy.
    
    I did once own an Applause with a graphite top, aluminum fretboard,
    and phenolic resin neck...  The rosewood bridge was the only wood
    on the guitar.  I sold it four years ago, and haven't missed it.
    
    I use humidfiers on my acoustics, too-- at least from October through
    April.  The summer is usually humid enough that I don't bother.

    buzzing a little more during the real humid weather.

    I've been talking about an electric, although it would likely
    be more pronounced on an acoustic. I noticed when the humid
    weather came in I had to raise up the action a little; now
    I have to lower the action/straighten the neck. 

    All wooden guitar necks do this. It's frequently more obvious with
    electric, since the action is often set lower.
    
    As Mark pointed out, Winter is far tougher on guitars than is summer, except
    in tropical climates.

    I've always been a 'wood guy' myself, but lately I've been weakening. 
    Checked out a Modulus 5-string bass the other day; I've always had
    mixed feelings about these, mostly due to lack of 'wood' in the tone,
    but the more I play them the more they grow on me.  The response on
    these is almost perfect and very even over the entire board.  And
    climate problems and warpage?  Forget about em.
    
    I still can't see it for acoustics, but on electric instruments the
    composite designs have a lot to offer.

    I thought I'd mention this...
    
    I went to see some friends play in Newburyport a few weeks ago.
    We parked near the post office (sorry, don't know the name of
    the street but its the one the Post Office is on) and walked
    down to the Grog and passed a coffee house on the left and heard some
    very familiar spanish guitar music coming from it.
    
    Apparently there is a coffee-house there that has a guy there doing
    spanish/classical (mostly spanish) guitar music every Saturday evening.
    
    The guy is quite good, has a rather amazing repetoire (amazing at least
    in that he plays ALL my favorites) and it was just a "lovely" way to
    spend an evening (especially since we couldn't get into the place
    where our friends were playing).
    
    So if you're a fan of spanish guitar (and I am a BIG LOVER of that
    kind of guitar playing) I'd highly recommend this.   And it's a cheap
    date... only the cost of a couple of cafe mochas.

I've run into Earl Klugh, Larry Carlton, and Stanley Clarke in music stores.
So what?  They play better than me, but I'm smarter and better looking. It's
a trade-off.

       Man recants enraged hooker story, says he cut off own penis 
       
       NEW YORK -- A man whose penis was severed has recanted his claim
       that he was attacked by an enraged prostitute and now says he
       injured himself by accident, police said today.
       
       The missing member was recovered Tuesday in a plastic food
       container in the man's kitchen, too late to be reattached, said
       police Detective Frank Grecco.
       
       Domingo Morales, 67, told police on Monday he had sex with a
       prostitute in his apartment and that she attacked him after he
       told her he had no money.
       
       The retired truck driver later told investigators he made up the
       story out of fear that he'd be committed to a mental institution,
       Grecco said.
       
       "He stated that he makes guitars in his apartment and that he had
       the neck of a guitar between his legs while he was working on it
       with a knife. The knife slipped off the guitar and severed part of
       his penis," Grecco said.
       
       "After it happened he got so excited that he doesn't even remember
       putting it in the Tupperware."

    I got the ultimate referal from (of all places) ProSound here in Colo.

    Seems that there is a local band who wants to press a CD here in town
    and shop for a label.  They've got this financial backer who has loads
    of dollars to spend on this project, and he went off and contracted
    Kelly Keagy from Night Ranger to produce the thing (at like $400/day
    plus expenses).
    
    Seems like Kelly requested a studio with a Mackie 8-bus...And I got the
    referal from ex-band-mate Mark, and the staff at ProSound.
    
    This is working out well:
    
    - I get to engineer for a guy who obviously has seen some cool tricks
    - I've made enough dough to carpet my studio and texture/paint the rest
      of my basement (just in time to sell the house)
    - I've learned how to recover from ADATs that eat tape and lose sync
    - I've confirmed that ADATs will NOT live in my studio, TASCAM? 
    - I got to audition a Neumman U47 Tube mike...  a REAL one.  Wow! 
      ('nuff said).  :-)
    
    So, I've decided I *do* wanna be an engineer when I grow up, and that
    just cuz I don't have a Neve or an SSL doesn't mean I can't make stuff
    sound 'right'.

    Does anyone remember a listing of all the transcriptions that have
    appeared in Guitar World Magazine ? I know there was a list here

    I was looking at a new Yamaha acoustic and the specs said "ovankol
    back" and "nato neck".  Does anyone have any more information on these
    mystery woods?  Do they go by any other, more common names
    (balsa, perhaps :-)?
    
    Btw, the guitar was a Yamaha FG441S, a D35 copy with solid spruce top.
    Anyone have experience/opinions on these?

    Nato is very similar to mahogany (it might actually be a south Pacific
    variant, in fact).   Same general properties and appearance.  A lot of 
    imports use nato for things traditionally done in mahogany (i.e. necks 
    and sides and backs).
    
    If it is a D35 copy, I'd guess ovankol must be some other tropical
    hardwood that looks like rosewood...

    I used to be an FX nut back in the 70s -- for Flangers, I tried em all. 
    To be honest?  My favorite was the rack mounted MXR Flanger/Doubler
    unit...very nice.  I'd put the ADA second in line, with the MXR
    a/c-powered floor model in a closed third.  I never really liked the
    Boss box, but that's a personal preference.  Even the TC floor unit
    didn't wow me, but it certainly was a clean sounding unit.
    
    Now for Chorus units, my fav was always the MXR yellow floor box.
    Big, noisy, ugly -- but boy, what a sound!!  I prefer this over
    all other chorus units ... the TC, the ADA, etc.

	I noticed this advertisement,it seemed kind of like contributing to
a vintage pedal market. I've never found much use for flanging,but chorus has
always had an appeal to me. Most units that are mentioned previously
I've owned or tried extensively seem to muddy your guitar tone too much. 
I came to the conclusion that it was due to the limited frequency range 
and bandwidth. Early multi effects box's did the same for my ears. I still
have and use a TC Electronics Chorus/Flanger/PM. The nice feature of this pedal
is that you can put it in a rackmount tray and control it with a footswitch 
on the floor. For the kind of music I like to play it sounds great. If tone is
not a concern for a Vanhalen/crunch/munch type sound I'm sure the ADA/MXR etc 
pedals provide the coloration typically needed.
	Someone told me the other day that my original TS9 is worth $175,
which is more than I paid for my first guitar. :^(  Vintage effects can
still be had at bargins,but just like everything else these items are getting
snagged up pretty quickly by the profiteers.  Check out AnalogMike on the 
Web....

    I hear to get a good dose of the ADA Flanger sound, check out any old
    Pat Travers band record.  I picked up one of the MXR AC powered floor
    units myself awhile back, I think it's pretty nice.  But I'm told the
    ADA unit can get more *radical*.
    

    Ya know, I always found Roland SDE-1000 makes a cool flanger when
    set up per the book!!

    It's funny that Buck mentioned the MXR flanger/doubler. I bought
    one of these rack-mount blue units at a Flea market a couple of
    years ago. It had pretty good sound, but I never used it and
    decided to sell it. I brought it to the R.I. show but no one
    gave it a second look. Then I put it into the Want Ads. It sold
    the first day it was posted. I had people calling me for weeks
    after wanting that unit. Apparently, these have some kind of
    acult appeal to a small group of analog fenatics. 
    
    I still like the flange in my Alesis MVII but it hardly ever
    get's used. I wouldn't mind one of the TC jobs.

    Picked up a great little cassette cutout last week, "Guitar Player
    Presents Legends of Guitar, Country Vol II".  There's a whole series
    of these "GP Presents" put out by Rhino, and I hope they're cutting
    more of em out.  These make great car tapes.
    
    Anyway, the first track has a very tasty bit of speed playing on it.
    It's called "Little Rock Getaway" and the guitarist is Jimmy Bryant.
    This track is from an album Jimmy cut in the 60's called "The Fastest
    Guitar in the Country".  The liner notes say that country disc jockeys
    originally refused to play cuts from this record because they were
    convinced the solos were sped up in the studio.  The producer actually
    had to bring Jimmy to a deejay convention and have him play the parts
    live before they would believe otherwise.
    
    The cut starts with a slow tease intro, then it's off to the races.
    Over before you can catch your breath.  And there's something about
    Jimmy's style that makes it seem even faster than it actually is.
    
    Btw, has anyone seen or heard Country Volume 1 in this series?  This
    one is so good, I want more.

    "Country Boy" by Albert Lee is just devestating! I'm usually no great
    fan of country picking, but when I saw AL do this live (he was playing
    in Clapton's band at the time, c.1980), I couldn't believe my ears. The
    speed of it all would have been enough to have me shaking my head, but
    it went a lot further than that; the sheer clarity of his licks was
    unbelievable.
    
    And all done with a smile on his face and his eyes glued on the

    That amp at that price wouldn't last 5 minutes around here. A Twin in
    "fair to good" shape is in the $700 range. Now if you could find a Mesa
    for that kind of price, I think it would be illegal NOT to buy it!

    I've been looking for a good deal on an american strat new or used and
    decided to check out the midnight madness sale at Cheshire Music in 
    Keene N.H. this weekend.  The prices were to drop starting at 8:00P.M. 
    to 12:00P.M. the discount going down to 35% on Fender equipment at
    midnight.  We got finished jamming at 11:30 so I went down to check it
    out.  They had two new american strats left in the store.  I asked
    about the price and was quoted $625.  The tag on the guitar said $975
    retail.  I asked what the 35% sale was calculated on.  I had been by
    the store a week before and was quoted $625 on the same guitar.  Let 
    me get this correct now:
    
    	$975 x .35 = $341 this subtracted off of the ret = $633
    
    So the sale price is actually $8 lower than the normal asking price?
    
    N0! then the .35 is off of the asking price?  I offered $400 and 
    was ready to grab my new strat.  Guess again!  The sale turned out to
    be a big ripoff to get customers into the store.

    In some other note in here we've discussed dealing with music stores
    and I have said many times that "sales" are (mostly) just ways to
    get people in the store.
    
    Think about it. What possible reason would they be willing would
    they accept one price the day of the sale and refuse it one day
    (or week) before or after?  
    
    The way to think of a sale is that the "nominal" asking price has
    been lowered.   In most cases that means that the sale sticker price
    is now closer to the real "what they'll take for it" price. 
    
    Folks, there is only one "real price" for something:  the minimum that
    the seller will accept.
    
    My reaction to your story was not "he was ripped off" but "gee, on the
    non-sale day they didn't even make much of an effort to get list price
    from him but offered what was, for them, probably a fairly reasonable
    discount."
    
    I.E.  I'm impressed by how they treated you, not outraged.  If you feel
    "ripped off", then I think its because you just have a naive notion
    of what a sale is.
    
    To me, that's like saying an auto salesman who lowers his price for you
    tried to "rip you off" by having a higher original asking price.  It's
    not necessarily a meritless argument, but it reflects a naive view.
    
    Frankly, I'd rather go to a store where they offer me the equivalent
    of "sale prices" everytime I walk in without any haggling than a store
    that tells me that the price is whatever's on the sticker.

    I agree with your comments.  It wasn't the price that I was ticked
    about.  There regular price is probably the lowest in the area,
    including Vermont.  When I went in a couple of days before the sale
    the salesman put me off on buying the strat and inferred that the price
    would be much better Sat night he stated, "you never can tell what
    he'll do", referring to the owner and his pricing.
    
    By the way I found a amer maple necked strat in mint cond for $475 that
    I'm picking up tomorrow on the way to staff.

    don't bother working the price with them on minor stuff.  I'm really
    not interested in saving $5 on a $100 PC Midi interface and I don't
    want them to automatically think I'm going to squeeze them as hard as I
    can every time they see me coming.  But on significant items it's worth
    the effort to ask them to match or beat mail order pricing, and they 
    comply.  I've saved good money recently on a mixer and rack reverb and 
    compressor.  Because they like me (me money) so much, I've also been able 
    to go in unarmed with competetive pricing and say "give me a good price 
    on this" and they have complied (later research has confirmed).
    
    The key thing is to be totally unable to stop yourself from spending
    thousands of dollars every year on musical instrument equipment.

    When I said "I'm Shocked", I was being sarcastic. Virtually every 
    retail store plays this game to get customers into the store. An
    informed shopper can smell a gimmick a mile away and will not fall
    for this trick. I love calling retailers on their so-called sales, 
    if for no other reason than to get them to admit that their sale 
    isn't a sale.  
    
    There are a few reasons why a retailer should get a little more than
    a mail-order house. Retailers have fancy showrooms that are expensive
    to operate. They have money tied up in inventory. From the buyers
    perspective you get instant gratification, you get to demo the gear
    and if there is a problem you can bring it right back to the store.
    Who wants to buy a guitar site-unseen? I certainly don't. Mail order
    houses charge shipping. Many people don't factor that into the price
    when comparing. As an example if an American Std. Strat is selling
    for $499 + $20 shipping (via mail order) and your local dealer will
    sell it for $569 + tax I would definately pay the extra $50 and buy
    local. If the dealer wants $200 more than mail order, than tell them
    to forget it.

    Do you mean $800 Amer or $800 Can?  The last time I visited my wife's 
    family up in Cape Pale Sp? NB the exchange rate was .75 or 75 cents to

    The best way for me to express how much I agree is to say that I
    could easily have written what you've written above.  In fact, I
    probably have.
    
    Main points:
    
    	o Local stores WILL match MO pricing when you factor in
    	  shipping
    	o The best strategy is to establish yourself as a good customer
    	o Don't hassle them for $5 - that doesn't make for being
    	  a good customer.  But do make it clear to them that you expect
    	  excellent price for the big ticket stuff and... you ALWAYS
    	  expect good service

    It's still the lowest price I've seen.   It's lower than the lowest
    price quoted on the Web's "New Equipment Price List".  I suppose I
    oughta send that price in.
    
    And what's amazing is that even though we got a fabulous price, the
    store still thanks me for the business everytime I walk in.  I.E.,
    EVERYBODY (buyer and seller) WINS!

    I have not had the same experience shopping locally in the Worcester
    area. Case in point: I bought my Fender Reissue 65 Deluxe Reverb 
    from a MO place in Altanta. Price including shipping was $550. 
    I tried to get local stores in Worcester (Kurlan's Music, EUW) to 
    come within a reasonable margin of this price and they were not even
    close. The best price they would offer was $699 plus $35 tax. 
    What hurts is the MO place I bought the amp from is actually a
    full-service music store complete with showroom, and big-haired
    salesdudes.
     
        I agree that you shouldn't play hardball every time you go into
    your local store just to get $5.00 off a small-ticket item, but there
    is no justification for marking up a $500 item by an extra $200. I
    don't care how new or hot the item is.

    Just got this via a chart/tab mailinglist I'm on.  EMI had brought
    or was threatening suit against UNLV for copyright infringement
    over the OLGA archives.  UNLV has either given in to the pressure,
    or was ordered by the court to close down OLGA.
    
    I don't know the status of the various mirror sites, but I'm
    trying to get into the one I most often use at MIT.  I'll

How come I get a CXORAS nodename when I enter a note

Because CXORAS is the RAS server that you're connected to the network
through.

Yeah, it's a drag.  A members-only conference is *loads* of fun!  
You can get around the problem by telneting to a VAX and working from
there, but then you have to use the character-cell interface.  It also
requires a terminal emulator that can do a decent imitation of a
VT 220 (or whatever).

On my list of midnight-hacks-to-do is a PC-to-VAX Notes interface that
works such that you're known by the username on the VAX.  Unfortunately,
my available time for midnight hacks is so limited that the project will
probably never get done.

Perhaps the RAS server oughta pick up my machines name instead

    I've found VTSTAR to be a very workable terminal emulator, and it
    runs on my PPP connection from home, too.

I use Keaterm for emulating terminals - works pretty good.  
I've also used VTSTAR - in fact I helped beta test the thing
in an earlier life...  It's good, cuz it's FREE!  ;-)

    I just saw a picture of Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore from the
    70's, holding a bullet neck Strat with a very obviously, fully
    scalloped fretboard.  Duh!  Am I the only one this is news to?  I never
    realized he was part of (started?) this trend (and this despite being
    a huge Blackmore fan).
    
    Back when Yngwie was rising to glory, he would constantly whine in
    the press about how he wasn't a Blackmore clone, wasn't influenced by
    him, never listened to him, etc etc; this despite some rather obvious
    similarities.  But I always assumed the scalloped thing was Yngwie's.

    A friend of mine turned me on to some early McCoys recently.  My
    impression of the McCoys was pretty much "Hang on Sloopy" (the first
    tune I ever performed in public btw) and I always wondered how Rick
    Derringer got hooked up with Johnny Winter.  To my surprise, the McCoys
    were a pretty smokin blooze rock band for the time.  Kinda like early
    Ten Years After in some ways.

    Van Halen, Roth Together Again - The impossible has happened. Van Halen
    is working with original vocalist David Lee Roth after parting ways 
    with Sammy Hagar.  Roth had split from the
    Los Angeles-based quartet just over 10 years ago in one of the most
    bitter incidents in rock'n'roll  since the Beatles broke up in 
    1970. The band's manager says Roth is working with the band on
    a track that will be included in a greatest hits package scheduled for
    release in October. But it's not yet clear whether this is a prelude 
    to his re-joining the band in a full-time capacity. 
    
    

   And it's not even April 1st.  Hmmm...  :-)

   Gee, what was "the most bitter breakup" (or whatever) all about?  I had
   heard it wasn't all that "nice", but never heard the details.

   In a way the timing is too bad;  I always thought Sammy was a poor
   substitute, and that the band never really sounded like "Van Halen" sans
   Roth, but I heard some cuts off the latest VH album and must admit they
   sounded a lot better than previous Van-Hagar offerings.  Eddie even lost
   the keyboards and got his tone back.

    I caught Dave on the Tonight show one night, just before the Vegas
    thing was about to take off.  He was really sad; lame humor, no timing,
    he seemed burned out and wasted.  I later read an article about his
    Vegas debut; sounded like it flopped (no surprise) and that whole
    thing was stalled.
    
    To make it back with Van Halen he'd need to be in fighting trim; I'd
    love to see it, but the Dave I saw was a long way from that.

Well this is good for Roth, I read an article on
him somewhere a while back,,,  he sounded pretty 
destitude to get some REAL work again.

Although I was never a huge fan of his both with
and after Van Halen, he always AMUSED me...

I think it's huge of them to put the past down and
try again..

But what the hell, Eddie got clean and sounds terrific
now, may D.L.R can do so too..

    I believe when Eddie and David parted company, Eddie was hitting
    the bottle pretty hard at the time. It almost cost him his marriage.
    He went on the wagon and stayed there for quite some time, but as
    soon as he went back on tour, he started drinking again. I heard
    that when he returned home from his tour, Val had placed all of
    his personal affects on the front lawn.  I don't ususally keep
    up on these things, but I heard it somewhere.
    
    Over the years there have been countless band breakups. When the
    money starts to run low, people become more willing to patch things
    up. It happens at the highest levels in the entertainment industry.
    Who would have predicted that the 3 remaining Beatles would ever
    work together again?

    a bit, got much good advice, met a few people.  I think life without
    notes may be the toughest part of the road ahead.

    Anyone know where I can get a Fender strat case cheap?  I'd LOVE a
    tweed one - does Fender sell 'em??  How about the Plastic/ABS ones?

    Last time I was in Guitar Center, they had a pile o used tweed Strat
    cases for sale.
    

Of course, the popular SKB has some nice cases for all styles, I 
think they're around $70/$80 mail order for a good one..

Musicans Friend has a bunch of cases in they're latest mailer.

Tweed cases are really nice, but ya really got take it easy
on them...  once they start getting beat up they tend to 
look crappy..

    I bought my Strat with the SKB case.  I think they're pretty cool!

    SKB has a "form fitted" Strat/Tele case for $58.00. These type fit
    better in the trunk of smaller cars than the standard types.

    I dug out my strat for the first time in probably 4 months last night.
    Plugged into the Deluxe Reverb and had a great time.  Had so much fun,
    I got out the Strat XII, too (for the first in *ages*). 
    
    I'm really looking forward to getting my studio built in my basement
    and having all my stuff more readily accessible.

Living proof that if you play guitar,, eventually,
you just gotta have a strat...  

As much as I like the humbuckers,,,,  the single coils are
the nads...

	Probably true, but unlike GTS, one can be cured of this....
    	I was always primarily a Gibson player, but eventually did
    	buy a strat due to the truth of the above axiom.  However,
    	I never really became comfortable with the strat, and after
    	a while I found myself reverting to the Gibsons more and
    	more frequently.  Eventually the strat just became a dust
    	collector.  Finally I sold it (at a significant loss, mind
    	you), and it's unlikely that I'll ever take the plunge for
    	a Fender guitar again.
    
    	Still love the old amps tho...

    I just bought another strat...After selling the one I had before...
    It's like my 6th strat...  I keep coming back for that twang, I
    guess.
    
    Anyway, I can relate to having all your goodies in boxes...I'm building
    a studio in my basement, and my 16track and mackie are sitting in boxes
    for like, 6 months or more now.  :-(

hey Steve, most people LOVE seafood,, personally I hate
the stuff...  so there's the constant element of personal
taste...   

As for me, I'll always have at least one strat...
(of course, here more is always better!)

    Steve, didn't you have one of the Lace Sensor equipped jobs?  To me
    these just don't ooze the primal funk the way Leo's original single
    coil design does.

    	compare to a Gibson.  The scale makes it harder to play, 
    	especially bending.  And the thin tone just doesn't hold a
    	candle to the fat sound of a Gibson.  Of course, there are
    	times when the Strat is better suited but if I could only
    	have one guitar - no contest.

me, I really can't compare the two...

The are so completely different in design and sound
that there's just is no way to put them side by
side...

I think most of it comes down to what the player plays.
both have their own unique advantages...

   Just goes to show it's all up to personal taste.  I could re-write .-1
   swapping Strat and Gibson.  My Strat is definitely my first-and-fave
   guitar, and I even almost sold my Gibbo recently, but thought better of
   it when I compared the tones on tape - it's good to have both if you're
   doing multi tracking.  And my Gibbo is now set up as my "synth axe" so...

    I guess it's all relative.  Considering I normally play acoustic
    steel strings, a set of .010s on a strat seems ridiculously light.
    I used to have a Carvin with a 24.9" scale and I have an ES-175
    clone.  I never noticed the scale length making much of a difference
    in playability when comparing these guitars to the strat.
    
    If I could only have one guitar, it'd be my OM-28 ;^)

somewhat of a true statment..

Fenders just seem to bounce better....
When a Paul takes a dive, it's usually bad news..

With a fender, yea, you get a good nick here and there
and that sucks,  but that neck can be easily replaced 
if it snaps..  over all Fenders are easier to fix..

with a paul,,, it's much more tramatic and it's usually the
end of a georgous guitar. One reason I take the paul out for 
rehersals much less than the strat goes,, I got a clumsy bass 
player..

(and get this, I just spoke to Jim Clement at Mr. C's and he told 
me that Gibson has ONCE AGAIN, put on a price hike.  Les Pauls 
have gone up anywhere anywhere  from 200 to 500 bucks list..  
Jimmy Page models are now in the nieghborhood of $4,200,... a 
400 dollar list price increase !  Standards are now $2,400 list!)

    Yes, my strat had the lace sensors and I know what you mean about
    them not being like the traditional single coil units.  Still, it
    never felt quite right to me--the scale length does make it handle
    quite differently than the Gibson and also the lack of neck tilt
    seemed much less comfortable. There was a micro adjustment for this,
    but it was just that--micro.  There is a significant neck tilt on
    the Gibsons.
    
    Lastly, I was always somewhat disappointed by the thinness of tone.
    I always felt that the strat required a 100W amp to get the desired
    punch, whereas a Gibson could do just fine with 50 watts.
    
    Don't get me wrong, I love strats, and they sound great in the right
    hands (SRV comes to mind), but they're not for everyone, and definitely
    not for me.

    p.s.  I also agree with what both Alvin Lee and Jimmy Vaughan have to 
    say...  Gibsons seem to have a "handmade" feel to them whereas Fenders
    have that assembly line feel, but I also have to be very careful with
    the '62 reissue SG... the neck/headstock is so thin that I worry about
    snapping it off if I bumped into a mic stand.

    btw, I've got some video footage of early TYA with Alvin Lee playing a
    red Strat; and he sounds almost exactly the same as he does through the
    335s

    There is something about the sound of a strat that no other
    guitar can emulate...  thats why I bought one.  My Ibanez's 
    both do a pretty good job, but it's just not the real mccoy.
    Neck like a club, but you gotta love 'em.
    
    On the other hand, I betcha in a blind sound test, you'd never hear
    the difference betwist my grim reaper anna LesPaul.  

	I find my solo playing is different when I play my LP or my
	Strat - the tone and feel changes my playing. And when I need
	a 'delicious' tone, I pick up my Strat, whereas the 'gnarling'
	comes from the LP. A real jazz tone would also come from the LP.
	Power chords with emphasis on the lower E and A (a la Townshend
	in I'm A Boy) are best on the Strat! Blues is good on both.

	As you see, I can't do without any of these babes!

Any guitar with a marshall on 11 will hurt things...

But the subtlties of the different pickup configurations
are quickly washed away when the amps are saturated..

Dirty up a strat just a touch, and they sound a lot 
nicer to my ears, then when you're going for the 
ultimate gain settings.

crunch up a telecaster, and you've defeated the purchase
of that guitar.

crunch up a paul, and it'll just sing...

Use these appropriately !!  :)

    The Who, you'll know what I mean. A heavy bottom with sort of a sharp

    New York City, September 21-22.  It has a reputation as a very funky
    show; more players/low-end/off-the-wall than usual.  And it's in a bad
    neighborhood, which just adds to the adventure :-)
    

	Anybody catch the SRV tribute on WGBH over the weekend?  
	Featured performances by Jimmy Vaughan, EC, Buddy Guy,
	Bonnie Raitt, B.B. King, and a few others. IMO, nothing
	particularly exciting happened..(have I finally overdosed
	on blues?!?!) Most everbody except BB King played strats.
	There seemed to be a line of Fender 4x10 tweed and black-
	face amps that folks were using, probably bassmans & supers.
	One thing that struck me was how wimpy the tone was.  Gets
	back to my point about needing more than 50 watts to power
	a strat.  Each player covered a tune that SRV had recorded.
	Results ranged from uninspired all the way to downright
	boring -- really lacking the fire SRV was able to impart
	to each tune.

	Oh well, I guess it was the thought that counts.

as far as copying SRV, IMHO, that just aint gonna happen.
The man was one of a kind, just not easy to copy, what 
for him, just came natural.

    There's a newly released SRV tribute disc, with all the players you
    mentioned.  I thought that was a studio recording, but perhaps it's
    actually live cuts from the show?  I'll have to check.  Anyway, sorry
    to hear it didn't pan out.  Fwiw, the one review of the record I saw
    (Boston Globe) was very favorable.

    WGBH was offering it for a $100 contribution....  I believe it is a
    recording of the live tribute.  I don't want to actually go so far as
    to say that it was bad... but just imagine hearing a bunch of SRV
    tunes, and then imagine hearing them with no SRV... well, you kind
    of get the idea, ya?

    at Strawberries.  I expected much more.  It kind of makes you want to
    pull out your SRV collection and start listening to the real thing.

    right?  I've heard that one mentioned a lot in the press, been meaning

    I love Bonnie Raitt's slide work.  She's forged a very powerful and
    unique style, one of those people you can recognize in a single note.

    In recent posts, someone (Sam maybe??) mentioned that he wished (insert
    paraphrase here!) that the music behind some of the "guitar gods" had a
    little more content...
    
    Now, I like most of these 'heros' cuz they are obviously good
    guitarists/musicians.  So, don't get me wrong...
    
    
    However, I find that most ALL of them are sorta boring to listen to for
    a long time.  Why?  Cuz I like to hear ensembles...Ya know, BANDS!
    
    I mean Satriani is cool for a listen, but the drum machine gets pretty
    old, pretty quick (I ASSume it's a drum machine, or an automaton
    drummer).  Same with most of the 'heros' (Morse, Vai, etc...).
    The rest of the band hides in the background hammering out a pretty
    boring bed for these guys to wail over.  If I wanted to hear that all
    the damn time, I'd invite my pal Mark over.
    
    Now, before I get stir up comments like "Oh, but listen to the drum
    work on 'Yadda-Yadda'", I should say that this is a general
    observation.
    
    Now, to hop up on MY soap box, I'll say that this is precisely why I
    like Dream Theater so much.  The whole ensemble plays together SO well
    that it makes get all chubby and stuff; (Isn't that the goal in
    music?).  Anyway, there isn't this "singling out" of any particular
    band member.  They ALL play extremely well, play well together, to the
    point of another generalistic statement that EACH member of the band is
    a master of their instrument (or vocal cords)...But more to the point,
    the BAND is hot, but any one guy on his own??  Maybe...Maybe not.
    
    So, now folks are saying "Oh shit, there goes coop on his DT thing
    again"...
    
    Well, think about some of the other bands out there - maybe one of your
    favorites.  Some examples that pop into my Saturday-hat are ELP,
    Kansas, Queen, Yes, etc...  
    
    Food for thought.
                                

Miles Davis made a statement to the effect that it's
the rhythm section that is doing all the work when
someone is soloing and the soloist has to keep that
in mind.

I have to confess I'm not into guitar solo 
albums (last one I bought was Jeff Beck), but it seems
to me that if the guitar player is smart, he'll hire
the most inventive rhythm section he can find, because
that will make him look better in the long run.

    One of the best bands I've listened too in a long time is Alison Krauss
    and Union Station.   Banjoist/Guitarist Ron Block's style is
    understated, but he sure can pick the right notes.   The mandolin
    player (I'm drawing a blank on his name) is fantastic.  And then
    there's Alison, who probably has more musical talent in her left pinky
    than most of us could ever dream of having...  
    
    When I saw them live, I was astounded at how well they listened to each
    other-- the careful attention to dynamics, etc.  "Synergy" is an often
    over-used word, but it applies here.  The total *is* greater than the
    sum of the parts.

    For solos of any kind I'd say it
    rocks hardest when the drummer (and
    the rest of the band) are right with the solo. 
    When that happens in real time, that's the
    true poop in my book.
