1901.0. "Songs for Beginners" by RAVEN1::BLAIR (I like EVH, EC, & Jimi (SO THERE!)) Thu Jul 12 1990 19:17

What were the first songs you learned to play? I don't mean "Michael
Row Your Boat Ashore" either - you know, real songs. What would
recommend for other beginners? I'm *always* looking for something
    good/fun to learn.

    Thanks,
    -pat

p.s. The first song I learned to play was "Cortez the Killer". Neil
    	  wails on that!

Neil Young stuff is great. "Down By The River", "Cowgirl In The Sand",
    "Hurricane", etc.

Also: "All Along The Watchtower", "Not Fade Away", "Sweet Jane", "Louie
Louie", "Good Loving", "Breakdown" etc. are all great ones to start with...

First tunes I remember learning on the bass were...

"Come On Up" by the Young Rascals
"Mustang Sally" (along with 10 million other people)
"Knock On Wood" by Eddie Floyd

Looking back, I'd say they're still pretty good tunes to start off
with on the bass, especially the Eddie Floyd tune. I think I learned
early on the importance of the bass in keeping a groove.

I'd say they're still good tunes to learn off of, along with dozens
of other things from back then.

But the song that changed everything for me was "Sultans of swing."
Funny although that song is "thin" by todays standards of effects usage
and the like it still makes the old heart skip a beat.

Older Van Halen. When you're just starting out these are fun.
try out the first album + the one with Mean Streets on it (jeez, what
_was_ the name of that one?)...It's just power chords, nonetheless fun.
I was surprised to see how fast I picked up some of the harder riffs
after playing along with it a bit.

I started playing around with an old broken acoustic my cousin
gave me around 1960. I was 5 at the time. I cut my eye teeth on
Elvis' "Hound Dog" and Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Good", and "Blue
Suede Shoes". My of my favorite tunes during the early 60's was
the Moody Blues' "Go Now". The vocals and heavy piano in that tune
still grab me whenever I hear it.

When I think that all this stuff is now 30-35 years old, it really makes
me feel like I am over the hill.

My first song was learnt about 20 years ago when I borrowed a friends
acoustic guitar -- it was "Heart of Gold" by Neil Young. I remember
thinking how "easy" pop music was (compared to say playing Bach on a
piano). Soon after we formed a band and played "Johnny B. Goode" and
"Rise and Fall of Flingle Bunt" (any Shadows fans out there?!). Those
were the days! I still play guitar but have long since given up on the
    piano.

Very first song on bass was "Bad Moon" by CCR followed by "Down By the

in my first band until we lost the bass player. I used to plink around

bass ?? Never regretted that decision !!

It took me six months to find Johnny B. Goode and one year to find Louie Louie !

Now that you know that I'm not very gifted, I can dare to say that I'm still

Can you give me some clues ?

The Clap, by Steve Howe w. Yes

Just kidding... it's just that you guys are naming some tunes that
strike me as being nearly impossible for a true "beginner". Have
I got the purpose of this note mixed up?

I went thru two stages of guitar. I started out the first time
when I was about 9 or 10 taking lessons in a music store. I did
get to learn some 1st position chords, but that was about it. It
    didn't amount to much.

I started getting serious about guitar again in college after seeing
Steve Morse play, and I have stuck with it on and off since then
although I'm beginning to decide that I should stick to keyboards.

I think the first real song I learned was "Banapple Gas" by Cat
Stevens. I'm remember thinking I was pretty cool cause unlike my
other friends, I finally knew a song that ventured above the first
3 or 4 frets. I even have a vague recollection of being blown away
by seeing Morse and telling someone "you should seen this guy, he
played ALL over the neck" as if that was unusual.

Anyway, the tunes *I* learned as a beginner were much more modest
than some of the stuff mentioned here:

o Smoke on the Water - the main riff is so easy that sometimes when
I'm teaching it to new players, I put their fingers in place and
rather than have them move their fingers with the chord change,
I slide the guitar through their fingers (sorta like a trombone).

o Barracuda (my first venture into learning harmonics)

o The intro to Roundabout (my 2nd venture into harmonics)

O I Walk the Line by Johnny Cash (my 1st venture into country style
      pickin')

I always wondered how this song. Not so much the chord progression,
but the trick to playing the chords that fast. How do they get
    that 'machine gun' sound?

Yessir. Like Greg said, it's all the right hand there. In the heavy metal
circles I hang with, we'd probably call it chugging, cuz it kind sounds like
an old train.

It takes a little practice, but ground the palm of your right along the bridge
where the strings cross the saddles, then chugaway at it alternating up/down

"Barracuda" has got some odd time signatures and if ya wanna make it
sound right, ya gotta do it exactly the way it's written.
ie. Intro is in 4/4, but the verse time changes EVERY BAR; E is played
    3/4, 2/4, and 4/4 then, chord change to C in 4/4.

Once ya get over that, it can be a blast to play!!!

1901.84COOKIE::S_JENSENFunny or enlightening statementMon Nov 12 1990 18:0418
Tony, I think you're reading the chart upside down. Steve typo'd and left two
g strings, but I think he meant:

                           e
typo in previous note --> b
                           g 5 5
                           d 5 4
                           a
                           e

Which would make it a fourth to a diminished five interval. Actually, if you
play an A pedal tone underneath, you'll probably hear Amin7 - D7; though the D7
is not completely filled out.

I'll sometimes use diminished five intervals for dominant 7 chords - especially
if you're playing a bunch of chords real fast.

Yup, wrong way round, but I get it now.

What is the correct way to refer to these intervals in terms of chord
names ? Eg, If you play a typical I/V powerchord, without the octave,
then you're playing a perfect fifth. If you raise the fifth degree its
an augumented 5th, lower it then its a diminished 5th etc.. whats the
name for these two note 'chords' and how is it arrived at ? (eg, how did
you arive at the Amin7 and D7 chord names)

    Confused of REO
    -Tony
1901.86You Asked?AQUA::ROSTDennis Dunaway Fan ClubWed Nov 14 1990 11:4114

If you're sounding *only* the two notes you indicated, you have G and C
in the first position and F# and C in the second.

    Am7 = A + C + E + G

    D7 = D + F# + A + C

As one reply said, if soemone (like the bass) plays an A (or perhaps A
first, D second) underneath those two notes, those two chords are
suggested. By definition, two notes are an interval only, you need
three notes (two intervals) to have a chord.

    Hi Brian,

Thanks for the help so far, but, using the 4th interval as the example,
the notes C and G are relative to many chords (eg A Minor (natural),
Cmajor etc..). how did you arive at the chord of Amin7 ?

Sorry to sound so dumb, I never did know a heck of a lot about intervals.
    -Tony
1901.89I Really Don't Understand It, EitherAQUA::ROSTDennis Dunaway Fan ClubWed Nov 14 1990 17:1217
Sorry, but G doesn't belong to Am. Am has only A-C-E.

A lot depends on the context. Whip out yout little change while the
bass player is thumping an A and it's going to sound like Am7. If the
starts slamming the C, it'll sound more like C.

The third and the seventh are important in defining the chord type
(major/minor, simple triad or extended, etc.) so that you can actually
start throwing away notes from a chord and still have it recognizable.
The fifth is the first one you can dispense with (unless you are trying
to play a dim. or aug.) and then the root becomes dispensable!

    Look at it this way: What's a C6? C-E-G-A What's Am7? A-C-E-G
OK, if you play those four notes, which chord is it? It depends on the
    context, that's all...
