1844.0. "Pursuit of That Purrrrrfect Sound!" by FDCV07::DADDIECO (That's Just The Way It Is .....) Wed May 30 1990 14:23

Here we go again!!! Always in pursuit of that perfect bass sound!!!

So this ole boy goes out one fine day and drops into EUW and happens to hear
this killer sound coming from a Hartke rig and of course, immediately says to
himself - "hey, why can't I get that sound from my rig?" Turns out that
aluminum is not only good for recyclable cans but, makes great material for
speaker cones and so - here we go again - chasing that "perfect sound."

Well - maybe not perfect - but different at least - yes?

So what do we do now? We got a 2X15 Boogie cab and all we have to do is add a
2X10 Hartke cab and .... poof .... like magic we're there ... or are we?

I don't know - what do all you think? Can you just add a cab and capture
"that sound?" Could it be that easy? What about a crossover of some sort?
Shouldn't I be planning to add a crossover that will split out the highs and
send them to the Hartke Cab and let the entire signal continue to reach the
Boogie cab?

Gesh - maybe I should just sell the Boogie and replace it with Hartke gear?
But they don't build them in road cases - that's not good. My gear gets moved
alot!

Maybe I should learn to play the flute - t'wod be a lot easier on the ole
back!

later ... dan.

DON"T assume a Hartke 2x10 + 15s will make your rig sound like a Hartke
4x10. There's something magic about the 4x10 combination.

Also, more confusion. Before you spend any money, try the SWR 4x10
(EUW has em). The speakers aren't aluminum, and they may a bit more
roadworthy. To my ears, the SWR sounds better.

1844.5Sounds From the Weather Channel!FDCV07::DADDIECOThat's Just The Way It Is .....Wed May 30 1990 19:3019
    RE: .2!

Yep - I know what you mean - there's this monster guitar player I've
known for a while (too long), goes by the name of Lightn' Licks - and
it took me two years to convince him he needed to add a cab to his 1X12
rig. Now we gotta work on the Marshall stack concept!!

And Kevin: Thanx for the kind words on my rig. There's always that
"other" sound that seems better - you know? But with the prices of
Hartke and SWR stuff - I will probably just dream on! No harm in
looking though - hmmmmmm - seems that's what I said when I started
    looking at Boogies?

This may sound strange but it's true - for you bass players that have
cable in your homes - check out the Weather Channel and listen to the
background music - specifically the bass work - there's some really
outstanding sounds coming from behind the scenes!

    Anyway .... Thanx
1844.6Stick with Boogie !!MILKWY::JACQUESIf you don't stop, you'll go deafThu May 31 1990 12:4721
    Dan,

Boogie makes 2x10 cabs (and possibly even 4x10). Before straying from
the all-Boogie gear, I would demo a Boogie 2x10 cab in combination
with your present rig. With your bass head, you may be able to drive
it without adding a crossover, or additional power. Then again, you
may want to drive the 2x10 with your existing head, and get another
boogie power amp to drive the 2x15 cab. The possibilities are endless.
At least Boogie makes road-ready cabs that would match your' present
rig. I believe they offer a 2x10 with a "bullet horn".

    Doesn't your' head have a built-in crossover ?

For guitar rigs, Boogie makes 1x12 extention cabs, in either half-open
back, or Thiele closed back cabs. The prices are very reasonable, too.

I'm not even a bass player, but I've been looking at Jazz Basses.

1844.7No Crossover on the 400.FDCV07::DADDIECOThat's Just The Way It Is .....Thu May 31 1990 13:4220
    RE: -1

    Hi Mark:

The Boogies 400 doesn't have a built in crossover - however it does
have the two 4 ohm and two 8 ohm speaker outputs. If the 2X10 cabs
were full range (I'm almost sure they are), then I could simply plug
    one in.

The sound however is more the issue here, for me at least. I've demoed
the Hartke cabs and they do have "that" funk sound that I seem to be
    drawn to.

I'm thinking that maybe my ultimate rig would contain a 1X15 Boogie cab
coupled with a 4X10 Hartke cab both being driven (without a crossover)
    from my current Boogie head.

Hey - I got this chainsaw! Maybe I could just cut my 2X15 in half???

    Thanx ...... Dan

Yo, Boogie also has a cab, same size as your 2-15 that has 1-15, 1-10
then a 5" or some such and a bullet tweeter....go down to Daddy's and
    listen to one.

1844.10a 10 or two can make a big difference!COOKIE::G_HOUSENo, I'm very, very shy.Thu May 31 1990 20:3314
Dan,

Try out the Boogie 2x10 before you pass judgement that it won't do what
you want. The bass player in one of my bands has a pair of cabinets with
1x15 in each and one also has a 10 in it as well. That one 10 really adds
a lot of brightness to the sound, gives it a funky kind of sound kind of
like I think you're probably looking for.

Give it a try and see if it does what you want. If it does, you could
probably save some money over the Hartke ($$$).

FWIW...

    OK OK - I admit it! I just want some attention - I mean - it's just
not fair that these monster lead players get all the scrutiny - right?
Heck - my lead player has women falling dead at his feet all night long
    - it's a terrible sight and gesh what a mess to clean up! But he
handles it with grace and pinash!

    RIGHT!

    Hey - maybe it's because he plays a pink guitar - - yeah that's it -
where can I get me a pink bass!

1844.12Bi-amp ? Yes !!USEM::SEAWARDFri Jun 01 1990 17:149
I don't leave home without my bi-amp bass set-up. It has a wide
range and lots of response, and can be tuned to each place we play.
The variable electronic crossover can really expand your sound,
without it I have to reduce the low end to avoid cracking up my
    2 10s.  Through trial and error, I have settled on SEALED cabinets;
yes, there is a lot vibration to control, but it's been worth it.

Good luck in your pursuit of the purrfect sound...

    	re: Biamping (well crossovers actually)

Any recommendations for a post-power amp crossover?

I need a crossover for a 2x10 cab for bass, of course.. :-).
1844.15PEAVEY ...OF COURSE!!!!!!!!!HAMER::KRONI'm the Amoral Minority!Tue Jun 05 1990 12:199
Sorry ; no not really...the impression I get is that they soak up
too much of your power...I know peavey makes a few....the one used
in the 1x18+2x10 cab is crossed over at 500 hz....a little high
compared to what I would biamp at but I think that's as low a frequency
as a passive system will go without introducing too much loss .

1844.16active vs passiveMILKWY::JACQUESIf you don't stop, you'll go deafWed Jun 06 1990 14:4716
Active crossovers only work with line-level signals.

Passive crossovers work on power amp output signals. They are usually
mounted right inside the speaker cab. There used to be a company called
"Speakerlab" that sold passive crossover kits. They provide all the
components, and a set of instructions and you do the soldering and
assembly. I believe you can get these from You-Do-it (aka You-blew-it)
    electronics in Needham.

Active crossovers are preferred because there is literally no power
loss when using them which gives you maximum efficiency. The downside
is the cost of buying the x-over and the additional amplifier channels
needed to drive the low and high freq. drivers.
