1835.0. "Mark Leaf flight cases" by E::EVANS () Wed May 23 1990 14:45

Has anyone heard of Mark Leaf guitar flight cases? I understand Mark Leaf no
longer makes the cases, but it is his design.

From what I hear these are very nice cases for acoustic guitars - built-in
humidifier, plush lined, rubber seal, plywood construction with plastic skin.
On the downside, they are heavier than regular cases and cost more. Martin may
start selling some of their high-end guitars with this case.

Anybody heard of these cases?

Jim

I saw these cases advertised in either Guitar Player or Frets
(one of the last issues before it was dis-continued). I seem
to recall they were made so that you could place your regular
guitar case right inside of them. They were built like a brick
$h!+ house. I seem to recall they sell for about $250.

I suppose if you have a $2000 instrument and are going to be
touring, it might be worth your' while if you have roadies to
    move it.

I never saw a Mark Leaf case that you could put your regular case in, but
his regular cases were quite big. Lots of touring classical guitarists
use them because they are the only case they trust in the hands of airport
baggage handlers. I don't know what they cost now, but ten years ago, they
were $250. I think the shell is molded fiberglass(?) They used to have a
built-in hygrometer.

Another feature of the Leaf case I recall is around the edge of the
cover, somethiomg like the seal on the refrigerator used to keep the
cold in, rubber with embedded magnets.
Seems an arrangement like that would tend to cause shock to the
delicate wood if conditions changed severly since you opened it last.

In the premiere issue of "Acoustic Guitar" magazine, there are two
cases advertised. One is the Mark Leaf case. They describe the case
as such.. "Our hand-built, seamless cases are airtight and watertight.
The sturdy core of rigid urethane foam laminated with figerglass
effectively insulates against temperature changes and is lightweight
for easy portability". The photo shows a tapered shaped case, with a
large storage compartment below the neck. Their address is:

The other case advertised in this magazine is made by "OnTour
Products" This is the case I was thinking of that allows you to place
your regular hardshell inside (case within a case). The features of
this case are described as follows:

The OnTour foamcase, High density foam and Cordura nylon
construction, fits over your hardshell case to provide the ultimate
in insulation and shock absorption. Weighs only 3.5 lb. Comes in
black, gray, and many colors. Other features include:

    	3/4" foam protects and insulates.
Room inside for guitar footstool and sheetmusic.
Hand and shoulder straps for easy carrying.
