1800.0. "records you wore out learning to play ..." by GOOROO::CLARK (your new body is ready, Lord Krang) Wed Apr 25 1990 19:19

Back when I was learning (ha!) to play, I liked to jam along with
records. Great for picking out licks and chord progressions!
(Bad for learning how to play in a group setting). I still like
to play along sometimes. Some of my favorites ..

Just One Night - Eric Clapton (probably my all-time favorite)
    Completely Well - B.B. King
    Live Rust - Neil Young
    EC Was Here - Clapton
    Reckoning - Grateful Dead
Rock and Roll Animal - Lou Reed
Vol. 4 - Black Sabbath (only for the wailing solo at the end of
    "Wheels of Confusion")

what were your favorite records to jam to/steal from?

    Guitar:

    o Every Led Zeppelin album
    o The Yes Album
o Ozzy Osbourne Diary of a Madman
o Steve Morse and the Dregs "What If"

    Keyboards:

    o Yes's Roundabout
o ELP's Brain Salad Surgery and Trilogy

As soon as I heard about the phrase repeat feature on CD players,
I drove to the store and bought one.

I've used all the known techniques and then some:

    	o Needle dropping
    	o 16 RPM
    	o 1/2 speed cassette
    	o Cassette review/cue feature
    	o CD phrase repeat
    	o Sampling

Sampling? What's that you ask? I have actually sampled riffs into
my sampler and dissected them using various sampler features
(loop points, variable speed playback, filtering out backing tracks,
    etc.)

I won't claim that I learned a lot from any of these, but I've jammed along
to them quite a bit over time. Amazing how you can do that and then a
couple of days later you don't remember *any* of the songs...

Hendrix - Band of Gypsies (my all time fav to jam with)
AC/DC - Let There Be Rock
Ted Nugent - Ted Nugent

    	3. Any John Prine or Louden Wainwright III (sp?)

    	4. Hendrix - Are You Experienced?

Grateful Dead - Reckoning, once you tune your acoustic guitar to it
(they really do play in tune :^) you can jam the whole album.

Led Zeppelin - I wore out Houses of the Holy learning "Over the Hills

    wear yet!!

For years, two of my favorites were "Who's Next" and "Quadrophenia".
On bass, of course. Many of these are great tunes for pumping some
    rubbery bass lines on.

Can't say I ever gave Entwistle any competition on "The Real Me" though.

Snnoks Eaglin's first album, I think it was called New Orleans
Streetsinger opened a few doors for me. It was a very clearly recorded
album as I remember, with quite a lot of slow blues - ideal for
    playing along with.

ah, jeff beck, blow by blow.. yup I went through a few of them myself.

...

- Lez Zep's first album
- Rainbow "Rainbow Rising"
- Alman Bros. "Live at the Filmore"
- Les Dudek, "Cit Magic"
- Areosmith "get your wings" (I know, who didn't blow thru three or four
			       these)

oh yea, the first Boston album took a beating when it first came out.

And I didn't replace em, but

Black Sabbath Vol-4, and War Pigs got mauled pretty good. (That
was prior to me having the benefit of a pause arm.. )

The rest, well, I probably made some good clicks in just about all of em,,,

Hey Edd, thanks for reminding me about "Love It To Death",
a killer album for jammin to. Easy changes, but each tune
has nice twist. The bridge to chorus in "Is It My Body"
    is way cool.

I didn't have access to a record player or to very many live performers,
so I learned a little differently. After hearing a tune several times on the
radio, I would start trying to approximate what I remembered and make
corrections as I understood more details. This has some advantages and
disadvantages. Intricate details tend to get lost, but it helped me to
develop self-reliance with my instrument and I think it encouraged me to
be more open-minded about how to play the guitar because, not knowing exactly
what I was trying to reproduce, I tried some unorthodox things.

It's definitely not the best way to learn lix and trix but it did help me to
be more personal in my playing, whatever that's worth.

<<War Pigs is an awesome song to jam too.

YES Indeed!!

<<I like that whole album !

A pinical album for me. At the time, I was about 13/14. (70/71).
Spent hours trying to pick everything out... Took weeks...

What was that slow tune,,, Can't remember it now, I should,
wait,, It's comming back slowly,, Ah- I Got-it "Caravan"

this was HEAVY Stuff back then.... Black-lights and all..

<<Fairies Wear Boots is cool too.

YO!! Probably the engineering masterpiece of the whole album.
And who'd forget IRONMAN?

Remeber Volume 4 ? There was some halatious stuff on that one too.
Yeah, Sabbath was one great band back then... By todays standers it's
almost laughable, but back 20 some odd years ago, noone was laughing.

Remember when we were hearing "Keep Yourself Alive", "Liar", and "Brighton Rock"
for the first time ?

Anyone remember my yesteryear hero Bill Nelson of Be Bop Deluxe...that
man could really play...still can if you catch him away from his synths
that he turned to almost exclusivly.

Basically my education went like this...

Mum's Buddy Holly records taught me basic chords.

Dad's Chuck Berry collection taught me basic lead.

Jim Croce taught me advanced chords/finger picking.

    Pete Townsend taught me POWER!!!

Jan Akkerman & Bill Nelson taught me advanced lead.

    Gary Moore taught me speed.

Rye Cooder taught me I'll never be a good slide player.

    Stevie Vai taught me humility.

Joe Pass taught me more humility.

Eric Clapton taught me there is a God & he lives in Surry UK when he's
    not touring :-).

Plus a few classical/jazz teachers I've had along the way.

All this has made me a pretty humble chap;-).

    Cheers
