1739.0. "KMD Amplification" by LUDWIG::TEMP3 (Flying in a Blue Dream) Thu Mar 22 1990 02:41

Anybody have any input on KMD amps?
I like the sound, and they are inexpensive. But I
was just curious as to what other musicians thought
    	of them.

p.s. dont cut them up too bad. I dont want to feel
like I wasted my money. 8^)

KMD amps are an interesting concept. The folks at Kaman figured that
every kid who can't afford a Marshall wants a British amp, so instead
of going to Japan or Korea or even Meridian, Mississippi to build the
amp, they went to the UK and built it there!!!

The front ends are transistor, only the power stage is tube, so that
helps keep the cost down and reliability up.

Their MOSFET bass amp had some neat preamp features taht would make it
an interesting alternative to Peavey, but it doens't seem to be too
    popular.

Personally, I think they are wicked ugly. 8^) 8^) 8^)

    	Aw, come on!

They might be ugly, but they seem to be built REALLY tough.

I was using a KMD stack before I went with that other company
that starts with a "K". It actually was a pretty good sounding
amp. Like .1 sez- mine had a transistor preamp and tube power amp.
Two 6L6 tubes in the power section and it was rated at 100 watts!
Normally that would be a four tube power amp. I don't know what
the scoop was behind it but it was loud. I tried the all-tube
KMD XV100 head and hated it. Mine was a GV100S model and had dual
channels with pre and post gain for each.
In the two years I used it I only had two problems. Both times
it was the rectifier diodes on the main power supply. The last time it
was fixed we put heavier duty diodes.
I know they have updated their line with a "series 2", so I'm
not sure what the deal is on them now.

    Here we go again...

KMD has come up with a new amp line with new cosmetics. I didn't look
in the back to see if they were still tube/transistor hybrids or not.

One cool addition to the line is a powered 12" cab. That's right, it
has a 60 watt amp on-board, so you can daisy chain cabs from a single
amp's line out and add more power with each speaker.

sounds like a GTS satisfier for Coop. Ya got cabs with on board power
    yet, Coop?

No way mon... If it doesn't say Dual-Rectum-Frier on the cab, then
    I don't want it. :-)

Hey Coop - Going for the diamond-plate armor option?

You are truly sick and no longer a regular model of restraint!
