1656.0. "Effects questions" by OASS::MCMILLAN_B () Mon Jan 29 1990 11:41

    I am looking for a effects device for both vocals and guitar. My main
    instrument is keyboards, but I am trying my hand at guitar. I
    currently have a ROCKMAN/ROCKMOUNT configuration with a Fender
    Telecaster custom guitar. I run this setup through a Tascam 244 which
    is powered by a Power Base-1, monitored by TOA SL15's.

    I have read in great interest all of the data about the ART SGE and
    other effects devices, but I have just a couple of questions. Is the
    distortion better in the ROCKMAN or in the SGE? Also since I am using
    a computer for my keyboard work I feel that a fully MIDI controlled
    effect would be better than a ROCKMAN and digital reverb only device
    combined. Is this the case? Also, does the SGE provide the most for
    what I want or can someone out there provide an alternative?

    thanks in advance..............Bruce Mc

    The SGE might be what your lookin' for. I thought the distortion
    sounded good, and the quality of reverbs and delays was good too.
    Make sure you preamp it though.

    Oh also, I meant to say that I wouldn't buy ANYTHING for my rig unless
    I got a chance to try it in MY rig ya know ??

    I've played through a rockman and found the sound is muddy.
    It's one thing to get a nice distortion for each note,
    but the notes shouldn't get mucked up and muddy so you can't tell which
    is which. You'll notice this alot more when you play things with
    more'n 1 voice going on, counterpoint, but it comes out in chords and
    rythm too.

    That's why I don't like Rockmans. my 2 cents.

    Coop, is it common practice for dealers to let you bring home effects
    to try out? Or do you have to drag your stuff into the store?

    I have my eye on a couple pedals to go with the Kitty.

    Unless you know the people well, don't count on getting anything out
    for a loaner.... Generally the owness is on you to bring your stuff
    in to demo stuff.

    let us know what you find. I'm looking for somethign along this line
    too...

    It wouldn't do any harm to ask, but I'd plan to bring my stuff with
    me.... Of course, they'll probably have speakers...

    Gotta check to make sure they mate well together...

1656.7to preamp or not to preampOASS::MCMILLAN_BMon Jan 29 1990 18:0713

    	Are you saying that I have to have a preamp or that it is
    preferred? I was planning to use the SGE in the effects loop so that
    it is easily accessible from all channels of the 224, although as
    stated eariler, the primary application would be guitar and vocals. I
    am not totally familiar with the in's and out's of the SGE but I
    thought the effects loop would be location for it. Plugging the guitar
    straight into one of the channels of the 224 seemed to provide adequete
    gain, preamp still needed?

1656.8Just for effects, not level matchingCSC32::G_HOUSEIt's just a jump to the left...Mon Jan 29 1990 18:2415
    He's saying that the SGE won't function as a preamp. It operates best
    as a unity gain device (no level gained, none lost). If you're running
    it into something that expects a line level signal without having a
    line level input to it, it won't boost it enough. (Really he's saying
    he got burned trying to use the thing as a preamp and it wouldn't cut
    it...)

    If you're getting adequate signal from your guitar now, the SGE won't
    change that.

    I've only done a little recording with the SGE, but it seems to perform
    acceptably directly into my little Ross 4 track.

    Yeah, using it in line with a guitar amp, PA or in the FX loop is
    cool... Don't try to use it as a preamp cuz of all that
    techo-mumbo-jumbo Greg just wrote... ;^)

    I've had good success running the SGE through one of the tape
    inputs of my stereo. Alot better sounding than when I did this
    with a rockman. I have to run both level controls flat out but,
    the unit runs real quiet. If I had a 200 watt power amp I'd be
    the only guy in town running a Sony stack.

    Thats the point I'm trying to make...

    Mark, if you try to play loud, you'll smoke that power amp...I should
    know...  :^(  Be careful !

    Preamp it, then plug into your Sony Stack ;^)

    I've been running the SGE this way for a couple of months with
    no trouble at all. I plug the guitar direct the SGE then run a
    y-cord to the rca jacks of the stereo. I think this works somewhat
    like an effects loop only I'm running instrument level in and line
    level out well....not really line level because the distortion sounds
    better if I pin the output. Clean sounds still sound clean this
    way too. If my stereo was 200 wpc instead of 35 I might be able
    to get away with using it in a band situation.

1656.13Levels? What levels?TRACTR::SHIPPINGFri Feb 02 1990 17:5114
     I to own an SGE but I run it through the F/X loop on my GK. I
thought that I read something in the manual about not running the
instrument level and the line level at 100%, or as they put it "Do not
use the line level or instrument level to make up for large losses of
gain in a system." I usually keep both levels at around 80-85%.
     If the unit levels are at 100% does this increase the risk of
frying the SGE or toasting the GK? Has anyone ever fried their SGE
or toasted their amp doing this? I have noticed slight but noticable
power increases and decreases during use. Is this realated even though
the levels stay between 80-85%?

1656.14MXR Flanger questionsMILKWY::UTTLEYThese go to eleven!Tue Nov 02 1993 14:1510
    I recently bought an old MXR rack mount Flanger/Doubler, and have a
    couple of questions. It has the normal controls for width, speed,
    delay, and regen, but it also has this one mystery knob marked Manual.
    Does anyone know what this is for? No matter where I set it, it
    doesn't seem to do anything. Also, the doubler has a problem, the
    second guitar sound is way out of tune. Is there some way to "tune"
    this? Would anyone have or know where to get a schematic for this
    unit? Does MXR even exist anymore?

1656.15manual flange sweep?COOKIE::S_JENSENTue Jan 18 1994 16:3411
>> delay, and regen, but it also has this one mystery knob marked Manual.

    I seem to remember an old chorus I used to have that did this. As I
    recall, the manual knob allowed you to manually sweep through the
    chorus (flanger in your case). If you just set the knob it doesn't
    appear to do anything, but if you turn it back and forth, you can hear
    the sweep.

    Could this be it?
