1654.0. "John Pearse Strings" by LOOKUP::BUCKLEY (Cards for sorrow) Fri Jan 26 1990 14:37

This notye is kind of a plug for John Pearse strings. If anyone out
there hasn't tried em yet...pick up a package and check em out!!!

They make sets for electric, acoustic, and classical mediums. They are
very bright sounding strings, that have a wonderful tone that lasts a
very long time. The electric brand strings seem like they are made for
Floyd-rose style bridges. The ends are cut off to the windings, and
their elasticity makes the tone last.

They are also cheaper in price than GHS, Dean Marley's or D'addario's.

Pick up a set and see what you think...you can even post you comments
    here!

    Buck, a converted D'addario user.

    Dave,

They should be available in your local music store. I get mine from
the Minor Chord store in Acton. Look for the stupid Gibson Flying V
on the front on the package! (It looks *so* cliche' R&R)

Yo Buck, what kind of Microphone would you use for recording classical
guitar? Shure seems raspy, maybe it's the strings.

    Classical guitar?

I would try and X-Y or an M-S technique. I'd probably use AKG's
or any otehr high-end condesner mics. The shure SM81's aren't too bad.

A Neumann, maybe the newer TLM-170, would be a real nice
choice for classical guitar. Definately stick with a
    high-end condenser as Buck suggested.

Electro-Voice has some condenser mics that do a decent job recording guitars
for not too much cash. PL-76 is good, but out of print. Replaced by PL-77
and/or PL-78, I think. Usta be under $200.

Chet Atkins' advice for recording classical guitar: a hot condenser mic
about two feet away.

1654.15A cut above the restSOJU::SAKELARISTue Aug 13 1991 19:1617
Besides just acknowledging Pease strings are good, I'll qualify it a
bit. I just put them on my Takamine Acoustic last night for the first
time. Now, I'm not a choosy type of guy. That is, I generally take the
cheapest strings I find figuring that whatever their quality, they're
bound to be better than the old ones that I want (need) to replace. And
I always end up saying to myself "damn, I shoulda done this weeks
(sometimes months) ago". I'm always delighted with the sound of fresh
strings. But these Pearse strings really got my attention after I tuned
up last nite. They make my 6 strings sound like a 12 with all the rich
    overtones.

After a couple of weeks, I'll see if I can't remember to post
a note telling how they've stood up. So far I can say that I'm
extremely impressed and I'd agree that these strings are a cut above
    the rest.

When you do post your longevity reply, please be sure to indicate
the amount of time you played them during that period. I've rarely
been able to get more than 4 sets out of a set of strings - and like
anyone else would be delighted to find some that indeed could handle
    a longer period. Mike.

I've been hooked on D'Addario (try others and always come back). I
have a Martin D-16A and use mediums on the bottom strings and lights
on the top. I haven't tried Pearse strings yet, though, so maybe I'll
try 'em. Any former D'Addario fans that have switched to Pearse?

I have used a lot of D'Addarios on my Martin. I recently tried the Pearse
strings and was not impressed. Most recently, I have a set of Martin Bluegrass
strings on (heavy top/light bottom .12) that I like alot.

I've been using D'Addarios as well, and tried John Pearse strings last
year briefly. Though I was very impressed initially, I think they died
much quicker than the D'Addarios. Still using D'Addarios (on my
    acoustic).

If you really like D'Addario, you may be disappointed in Pearse.
I've used D'Addario strings for years; someone convinced me to try some
Pearse strings - that was the only time I've ever taken a set of strings
off before they were dead. They had come so highly recommended that I
had bought two sets; I gave the second set away.

Wow...that is hard to believe. Of course, it all comes down to
personal preferences, however, I used to be a D'Addario user,
but to me, and for rock, Pearse electrics strings are much brighter
and last longer than the D's...I'll still use D's if I can't get ahold
of the Pearse's, but to hear you took them off that quickly...

what did you not like about them??
1654.27E::EVANSFri Aug 16 1991 13:529
From the other guy who was not impressed with the Pearse strings ...

Buck, I haven't tied the Pearse strings on the electric, only on the acoustic.
They didn't seem as bright or have as much harmonics ... hard to describe. I
will give the Pearse a try on the electric guitar.

It's difficult to describe string tone, and it's been quite a while since I
tried them, but they made a definite impression on me. I felt that the
(acoustic) Pearse strings lacked subtlety and warmth of tone; almost an
unbalanced tone - could be the difference between acoustic and electric.
Strings are definitely personal preference; I've never liked Martin strings,
either, but I've known people who wouldn't use anything else.

As promised (re .15), my follow-up on Pearse Strings.

I've had 'em on now for over a month. From what I've read in this topic,
it appears that like everything else, it a matter of personal taste.
This sorta surprises me that some of you would not be favorably impressed.
Maybe the difference is the guitar they're put on, More likely, maybe its
our ears. As for me, I've heard no better string. Like I said in .15 I'm
not particular either - a string is a string, and new always sound better
than the ones I'm replacing. But I thought these Pearse strings were a cut
above when I first put 'em on and now some weeks later, I'm no less impressed
by them. I don't feel I need to replace them as they still sound bright and
crisp. But I just might anyway to see how far they deteriorated since I put
em on. (guaging string degradation is like trying to watch the hands of a
clock move - you really can't see it happening but after a short period its
 clear that it has.)

I don't have any figures like how many hours I put on them and temp/humidity
changes, and other such engineering data. But I will say that I play my acoustic
just about everyday for a minimum of 15 minutes, usually a half hour, and
sometimes over an hour. I never wipe the strings, and I keep my guitar on
a guitar stand and not in a case. I finger pick and flatpick.

So there is the data, it up to you to figure. I'd say try 'em. I think even
the people who weren't empressed would agree with that. For me, Pearse is
now my first choice of acoustic string.

That is what I like about them...I'm not one for changing strings often
(NO wise-cracks gh!!) 8^) ...it's the nasty Floys tremolo that makes
me keep strings til death on my guitar, but anyways, the Pearse strings
just seem to hold their brightness longer, and their initial brightness
is killer sharp! Makes me turn down the treble on my amp! The pinnacle
    rock strings to me ears.
