1639.0. "Martin 2nd owner needs advise on repair/guarantee" by NCBDVX::HOHMD (Sacred cows make great steaks) Tue Jan 16 1990 16:26

I am the SECOND owner of a '73 Martin D28 in need of some body work. There are
two cracks in the top that I can see light through when I shine a flashlight
into the sound hole (they extend from the bridge all the way down to the base
but the finish has no gap in it)

When I bought it from the original owner, we exchanged addresses and have kept
in touch in the event it should ever need work that would be covered by the
life-time/original-owner guarantee, but he lives in Florida now and I'm in
Iowa!

So, my real question is, have any of you not-the-original-owner-of-a-Martin
ever had your axe repaired and covered by the guarantee, and how did you go
about it?

thanks for the advise,

-dale

I had some warranty work done about fifteen years ago. I was the original
owner, but there was no documentation involved and no questions asked. I just
shipped it to the factory and waited four months to get it back. :^(

Nowadays, many shops are authorized to do warranty work. You might just ask
one of them what documentation they require.

I think trying to get Martin to do warrantee work on a 17 year old instrument
when you are the second owner is a bit unfair to Martin. I had similar work
done to my '73 D-28 recently by Martin. You can send the guitar to them and
they will give you a free estimate. The downside is that they take a few months
to do anything. You may want to find a good local repair shop.

Yeah, I have to agree. I replied without thinking.

Is there an official list of shops authorized to do Martin warranty work ?

I would be interested to know if there are such shops in the central Europe
area.

If the guitar is under warranty, then I'd send it back to Martin. They will do
an outstanding job. Unless you have something really major, you should get
it back in 8-10 weeks (this is the major downside).

Jim - who just sent his D-40 back to the factory :-(

Re: .-1

As I live in Swizerland, it might get quite expensive to have the guitar
sent back to Nazareth, Pa. ... but probably worth it if it's a serious
repair job and under warranty.

In my case, my D-35's frets are just worn after 15 years and need to be
replaced.

P.S: I wonder if it voids the Martin lifetime warranty when you have a
repair job done by an "unauthorized" person?
