1618.0. "Acoustic/electric Pre-amps?" by MORK::MALKOSKI () Wed Jan 03 1990 12:53

    I'm looking for information on guitar pre-amps. I have a Taylor
    acoustic with a Fishman pickup (similar to the Martin Thinline). It
    sounds great amplified. It retains most of the acoustic sound
    qualities, but a friend says that they can sound even warmer with a
    pre-amp. But I don't know much about this. Any input?

    I had a Fishman pickup put on my guitar by Richard Stanley. When I
    picked up my guitar, he asked me to check out a couple of preamps.
    One was $100, the other $150. The less expensive one seemed to make
    no difference at all, the more expensive one was OK. He had just gotten
    them, and was looking for some other opinions on them.

    I had gotten a Fishman put on my 12 string the year before, and had
    been using an EQ with it, and it sounded just fine. I thought the EQ
    was better then either of the preamps, because I had a LOT more control
    over the shape of the sound. And it provides a boost, which the
    Fishman definately needs if you're plugging into a board!!

    The Fishman pickups do need something.....especially on a 6 string.
    Once I messed around with the EQ settings, I really could tell how
    harsh it sounded without it.
