1567.0. "Guitar Player Hall of Oblivion" by TOMCAT::GOODWIN_S () Thu Nov 30 1989 01:09

Back in the late 60's I went to a concert featuring an obscure
band called 'Blues Image'. I liked them enough to buy one of
their albums. The guitarists name was Mike Pinera and he was
quite good. Anyone know whatever became of him? The band only
had one tune that I know of that got any airplay: Ride Captain,
    Ride.

On that same subject, there's a bunch of players I can think
of who seem to have faded away:

Peter Green from Mayall's Bluesbreakers and Fleetwood Mac
Elvin Bishop from the Butterfield Blues Band
Jim McCarty from the Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels
    	Kim Simmonds from Savoy Brown

I'm sure yooz guyz can think of more too...

Pinera and a fellow named Rhino were once in an incarnation of Iron Butteryfly
if I remember right, RHino went on to form a badn with ex-deep purple singer
Rod Evans and Lee Dorman (Iron B's bass player) called "Captain Beyond" they did
three albums, each successive one less gooder than the first (a classic,, with a\
3D cover that worth $$$ to collectors today) and faded into total obscurity.

other faders:

Adrian Gurvitz (Three man army, Miels Davis)
Mars Bonfire (Steppenwolf)
The Talbot Brothers (Mason Profit)
Harvey Mandel (John Mayall)
Mic Taylor (Stones, Mayall....yeah I know he toured with Dylan what a waste)

1567.2Funny You Should Ask...AQUA::ROSTSubliminal trip to nowhereThu Nov 30 1989 11:3144

    Mike Pinera, eh?

He left Blues Image after their second LP (that was the one with "Ride,
Captain, Ride") and joined up with Iron Butterfly, along with Larry
Rhinehart (who was credited as El Rhino). This version of the band
recorded one LP, "Metamorphosis", that was a far cry from their earlier
days....lots of harmony guitars (guess Mike had heard the Allmans, he
    was from the south).

After the Butterfly busted up, he briefly joined a band called Ramatam,
appearing on the first of their two Atlantic LPs. A pretty forgettable
band except that Mitch Mitchell (ex-Hendrix) drummed and the other
guitarist was a man who had undergone a sex change!!??

Following that, he worked with at least two other bands, (in what order,
I'm not sure), Thee Image who recorded for Manticore, and The New
Cactus Band where he replaced none other than Jim McCarty (hey, weren't
you asking about him, too?) and recorded "Son of Cactus" for Atco.

The last I heard of Mike was a solo record for the Florida-based TK
label (home of KC and the Sunshine Band). He was a good musician who
played in a lot of second-string bands over the years, many of which
    had a few good tunes.

My favorite Pinera tune is "Butterfly Bleu" from the "Metamorphosis"
album, the first song I ever heard with a talk box on it.

Briefly on some others you mentioned:

    Elvin Bishop

Elvin has had a long solo career since his Butter days, recording for
Fillmore, Capricorn and now Alligator records. He had a top 40 hit in
the mid-seventies with the country-ish "Fooled Around and Fell In
Love". Mickey Thomas, the guy who sang on that record now fills arenas
as singer for Starship!! Elvin still tours regularly, he hits Boston
about once a year, basically he has gone back to doing blues.

    Peter Green

Peter did a few solo albums for Reprise and Sail records, but mostly
has been a hermit. While the albums have been inconsistent, in their
best moments they show he can still play some mean blues.

Thanks alot! We should keep this note as a register of good players
who disappeared. BTW, Last I heard, Mick Taylor was touring on
his own. He hit Night Stage within the past year. I missed the
show, but a friend caught it and said Mick still has it! Supposedly
    he went the fusion route...

Elvin hits Rochester about twice a year an plays small clubs like the
Red Creek, strickly blues. Last time I saw him he had another guitarist
playing with him who was so blown away he could hardly stand. Even in
that condition he should an occasional glimmer of talent. Didn't bother
to get his name. Elvin is always up and puts on a good show and I always

Boy oh boy are we getting out there.....

    Talbot Bros.

After about half a dozen albums as Mason Proffit for the Ampex, Happy
Tiger and Warners Bros. labels, they busted up their band and recorded
one Warners LP as The Talbot Bros. They were already leaning to a
religious direction in their material, so it was no surprise when they
went into Christian music 100% as solo artists. John (the steel
player) became a monk (!!) and plays mostly classical guitar
instrumentals, while brother Terry does soft-rock vocal material. They
have done at least one album together again since they went into
    Christian music.

    Robert Fripp

Last I heard, Fripp was putting together a "pop" band with his wife,
singer Toyah Wilcox. Names for the band have been rumored to range
from Fripp Fripp (subtle) to Sunday All Over The World (somewhat less
subtle). Whether or not they will perform "The Saga of Rodney Toady"
    live is still unknown 8^) 8^) 8^)

    Les Dudek

Les had at least two LPs for CBS, worked with Steve Miller on "Book of
Dreams" and even led up a new-wave band with Cher (??!!) whose name has
mercifully slipped my mind. He's the second guitarist with Dicky Betts
    on "Rambling Man", BTW.

The other guitarist in Ramatam was April Lawton. She could
really wail. I saw them open for Edgar Winters' White Trash
(remember Frankenstein?) at Worcester Tech in '72. I can
remember her playing a black Les Paul Custom through a couple
of Marshalls. Sex change? You're kidding, right?

    	Neal

1567.12April LawtonAQUA::ROSTSubliminal trip to nowhereThu Nov 30 1989 18:1610

Well, after Ramatam's second album bombed, April dropped out of sight,
but in a GP feature on female guitarists, ex-Fanny guitarist June
Millington said she had met April and April told her she used to be a
man...seemed pretty funny for an axe hero who I first read about in a
Lester Bangs article for Ms. magazine (OK, don't ask me what I was
    doing reading Ms.)

The second Ramatam album is awful (my copy free to the first request!!)
but the first had a few good tunes and some hot guitar.

RE: Elvin Bishop

This guy seems to be hitting the skids. I remember seeing him with Stoneground
in an outdoor concert at Marine World (SF Bay Area) in the early '70s. He and
his band put on a high-energy performance that made me into an instant fan.

The next time I saw him was '85, when he was playing at our company (Digital
Research) picnic. He was extremely drunk and/or high and could barely sing.
Over Thanksgiving, my sister mentioned seeing him in a seedy country bar in
Placerville, CA. She said he was next to comatose.

Thanks for the correction on the spelling on Mr. Dudek.

He was definelty an Alman Bros. 'brother. That tid-bit twas what
led me to buy the album back in the days when I was blowing
threw Live at the Fillmore albums like they were popcorn.

I had (what I believe to have been ) his first album. (maybe not though..)

A picture of him and a parrot on the cover, both appeared quite
high ! How can you stone a parrot ? There has to be several ways
now that I think of it.

At anyrate, the album from what I recall was very well done, guitar
wise. City Magic was the 'Big Bang' from that album.

The two guys you saw in that video were Denny Dias (fat with a bushy
beard) and Jeff Baxter. They were the original two guitarists of
Steely Dan. After "Pretzel Logic", Baxter quit to join the Doobies and
Dias departed after "Katy Lied". By that time, Becker and Fagen had no
real band anyway, they hadn't toured for a few years.

The liner notes to "Can't Buy A Thrill", the first Dan album, give
credit to Elliot Randall for playing guitar on "Reeling In The Years".
I would have to go look at it again to see if it specified the *solo*
or not. Randall is a NYC based session man, as previously mentioned he
once had a band called Randall's Island. The guy is for real, he
ocassionally appears in product endorsements, I've seen him in ads for
    Korg and Marshall.

I'm sure Baxter could easily have played it, whether he did or not is
still up in the air I guess. BTW, the Dan used outside guitarists on

Well, I enjoyed reading these notes about the Eliot Randall v. Skunk Baxter on
"Reelin' in the Years." I've always understood it was Eliot Randall.

As for Baxter, I always think of the solo on "My Old School" as being his
trademark solo. Wouldn't be surprised if that's how he got the "skunk"
nickname--all those "skunky" noises coming out of his guitar in that solo..

..unless he just smelled bad.

That *is* Jeff "Skunk" Baxter on "My Old School," right?

Denny was the "smooth-as-silk" jazz-type guitar player doing the
solo on "Your Gold Teeth II".

Skunk got his nickname because he always wore black jackets with
white t-shirts (or vice versa). I'd say you're right about the
"My Old School" solo. I have no idea as far as the "Reelin' In
    The Years" solo.

re .50 (Pat Travers)- I think he's still doing clubs. No word
on a new release. Last time I saw him play live was a little over
two years ago in Rochester, NY. He was still playing great and
Pete (Mars) Cowling was on bass guitar.
I'd have to say that Travers was a major influence on my guitar
playing. The "Crash and Burn" album and tour was one of my all-time
favorites. What a guitar assault! His later releases were mixed
and even though I admire PT for trying to change his style somewhat,
He lost his commercial success. His last album I know of "Hot Shot"
is reminiscent of his earlier work but produced better. You might
find it in the cutout bins.
A read an article on Pat Travers about four years ago that pretty
much alludes to drug/alcohol problems and subsequently cleaning
up. Also I think it was Paul Gilbert that recently mentioned Travers
as one of his early influences.

Well, Pat, it doesn't help you much, but Pat Travers is playing in Boston
sometime soon (this week? next week?). He's at the Channel, on a double bill
with Molly Hatchet.

I saw him headlining at the Channel this past fall, and he still can put on a
good show!

He did leads as well as Travers and quite a few songs utilized
the two axemen extensively. Check out the live versions of
"Boom Boom , out go the lights" or "Makes no difference".
Pat Thrall worked with Travers first on the "Heat in the Street"
album, then "Crash and Burn" and the live "Go for what you Know".
I believe he had some minor part of the "Radioactive" album but
it was at this point that he left the Pat Travers Band.
Pat Thrall and Pat Travers worked well together but it really
never was meant to be something that would endure. I think right
afterward Thrall went to work with Glen Hughes who had just left
    Deep Purple.

rhythm behind Al DiMeola (!!) on the Stomu Yamashta "Go" album. Before
Travers he was much more of a progressive/fusion player.

Yep, both the band and album.. There was a second LP called "Visitors"
I think, that had slightly different personnel. Good band, a guy named
Todd Cochran, who had been a jazz pianist was the chief
writer/vocalist, and Mike Shrieve from Santana was the drummer (Shrieve
also worked on "Go", which is probably how Thrall ended up there as
    well).

Last I knew of Aldo Nova- he appeared as a guest on a few
albums (can't remember off the top which ones), but even that
was three-four years back. One album I know he did play on
and got credited in the liner notes was Coney Hatch's last
album "Friction". Then I never heard anything else from Coney Hatch!
And I've wondered whatever happened to Honeymoon Suite? I'll

Well, Coney Hatch is no more. Andy Curran (former member of Coney
Hatch) has a solo album out. It came out last year in Canada.
I don't know whether it has been released in the U.S. His first
    single is "License to Love".

Honeymoon Suite is still hanging around. I believe they released

Anybody remember a Canadian (I think) band called Babe Ruth? They
had a couple albums out in the mid/late '70's called "Home Run" and

I think Babe Ruth were actually from the UK, but they had a big
Canadian following (bigger than the US, for sure). Their guitarist
Alan Shacklock was pretty interesting. They had four or five LPs for
Harvest, I still have one stuffed away somewhere that has then playing
the theme to "Fistful Of Dollars" (or was it "Good, Bad and the

You got it right. Janne was the player on many ABBA albums. Check out
songs like "Knowing Me, Knowing You" or "Eagle" for some tasty heavy
    guitar in a pop framework.

Janne released a couple of US albums on Columbia. "Katharsis" was
recorded in Sweden and is in the Beck vein. "Earmeal" was done in LA
with Toto as the backup and is, as you might expect, a little too slick
    for its own good.

He also plays some tasty stuff, including some things on a Coral sitar,
on the last Andreas Vollenweider album, "Dancing with the Lion". In
fact, he plays on some cuts with David Lindley...now there's two guys I
never expected to see on the same album!

    Hi,
New to this conference. A few updates for anyone still reading:

Skunk Baxter first appeared on the third Ultimate Spinach album in 1970
(They dont name bands like that anymore!)

Mike Pinera had two solo albums, recorded a Blues Image reunion album
released independently, and played on two Alice Cooper albums (cant
    remember the titles)

The solo on Quicksivers Fresh Air was by Gary Duncan. Cippolina plays
the backrounds. His part doesn,t come across on the radio but sounds
    great on the record

Mick Abrams has a new solo release in England. He also works with the
    reformer Blodwyn Pig.
