| There are lots of alternatives. You could look for an old Fender-style
cabinet, and expect to find something in relatively good condition
for about $100.
If you want something a little more modern (ie. Theile, EV, Joe's
"time aligned") there are lots of companies making this type, but plan
on spending around $200 or more. In my mind, the biggest advantage
to the newer ones is size and weight. A larger cabinet is more
forgiving of design simplicity (crudeness). The smaller the cab, the
more critical the design becomes. This is the major reason why the
new high-tech home stereo speakers of the small bookshelf variety
are so expensive, because the cabinets take considerable effort to
design and build.
I have an old Fender Showman cabinet that I bought for $50 in
fairly rough shape, and I spent another $50 refurbishing it. It
can accomidate 2 12's or 2 15's. A good Fender cabinet for 1 15
would be an old Bandmaster, as these are small enough to fit into
many small cars.
If you plan to spend the money for a new cabinet, I suggest
you look at the Mesa Boogie line. I'm not sure if you can buy them
empty, though.
