1218.0. "Pickup Feedback help needed" by FSTTOO::GALLO (Ultrix Instructor) Mon Mar 20 1989 13:31

    	I'm having a problem with the pickups in my bullet bass,
    that someone here may be able to help with. When I play at
    high volume my amp will emit a high pitched squeal when I
    am facing the amp. It goes away when I turn away from the amp.

    	Can someone shed some light on a possible fix to this? Would
    "waxing" the pickups help?

    Thanks,

    Tom Gallo

1218.1easier to replace than fix !!ANT::JACQUESMon Mar 20 1989 13:4913
    Sounds like a problem with a microphonic pickup. This is usually
    due to a loose winding, or pole piece. Waxing would probably help,
    but a replacement would be easier. Waxing would probably correct
    most problems with loose windings, but may not do much for a loose
    pole piece.

    If you are looking to replace the pickup, I would suggest Seymour
    Duncan, if you want to keep the guitar looking and sounding (for
    the most part) stock. If you want higher output, active eq, and
    no hum, than the EMG active systems are probably the best.

1218.2wax on/wax off-maybe imagination is the best?HAMER::KRONMon Mar 20 1989 13:5215
    Hi Tom,sorry I couldn't get back to you w/more info on your other
    problem-with that resonance -quick question,is it 32" or 34" scale?
    anyway about the squealing,waxing should help except you've got
    to be very careful not to leave the coil in the parrafin too long
    because it will distort the bobbin and possibly melt the insulation
    on the windings shorting the coil.this willeither lower the output
    or cause it to not work at all.Ive heard that as an alternative,a
    50/50 mixture of elmers glue and water brushed on the windings will
    stop the vibration of the windings and eliminate this problem....
    also how do you set up your tone controls? If you set the treble
    all the way up you may be bringing this on yourself. reply and let
    me know how you do.

    Re: .-2
    		It's 34" scale.I play with the instrument tone all
    		the way up and the following on the amp:

    			bass: 9
    			mid:  5
    			treble: 4

    		This is a approximate. I also change these settings
    		depending on the tune.

    Re: .-1
    		Replacement pickups will require major surgery. I'd
    		like to do this, if someone can recommend a reliable
    		shop to do the work.

1218.4Why major surgeryANT::JACQUESMon Mar 20 1989 17:566
    Why would replacement pickups require major surgery? How is a Bullet
    Bass set up ?? Don't they use a split pickup like a Precision Bass?

    Re: .-1

    		The bullet bass uses a small oval split pickup. It's
    not a full sized P-bass pickup. To install a p-bass style pickup,
    the body needs to be routed and the pickguard modified.

    		I've hesitated getting this work done, since I don't
    know how it'll sound and it's pretty much irreversible once I
    hack up th pickguard.

1218.6Repair Person SoughtFSTTOO::GALLOUltrix InstructorTue Mar 21 1989 17:2110

    Ok, Here's the story. Just ordered an EMG active P-bass pickup
    from Rice Music in Co. I now need to find a reliable,competent
    repairperson to do the work. I live in Lowell, Ma.

    Any suggestions?

1218.7Hamels is close to you ANT::JACQUESWed Mar 22 1989 12:077
    I have heard good things about Hamel Music in Chelmsford. I have
    never dealt with them directly, but a good friend had some work
    done there, and was satisfied.

    Good Luck

1218.8Any decent repair person can do itROLL::BEFUMOTechnical competence is the servant of creativityWed Mar 22 1989 19:096
    I bought an amp from Hamel which, I'm told, was worked on by their
    own repairman. Whatever's inside looks like it belongs, so I'd
    say whatever was done was probably done well. In any case, you
    really don't need a world-class luthier to do the kind of job you're
    talking about. just about semi-competent repairman should be able
    to handle the task without causing you grief. Good luck.

    I've decided to take it to tewksbury music. I've had their
    repairperson do some setup work for me and I was pretty pleased.

    I'll post the results here.

    Thanks to all for the info.
