1099.0. "VALUE OF MARTIN D-35?" by SAURUS::AICHER () Tue Jan 24 1989 19:48

    I own a Martin D-35 which I purchased in 1972, and I was
    wondering what might be the fair value of it today.

    I paid around $700 for it, it's in good shape and I know that new ones
    go for around $1400. I also heard that after 15 years
    the value starts to go up.

    Now I'm REALLY confused. I might sell it to a friend, so
    I want to give him a fair price.

    Any experts out there?????????

    					Thanks alot,

    Where are you located?

    Good string instrument dealers like Cambridge's Music Emporium or
    NYC's Mandolin Bros. can do an appraisal for a small fee.

    The magic year for Martins is 1969, when they stopped using Brazilian
    rosewood. There is no particular cachet in being 15 years old.

    New D-35 price is around $1200. A '72 in dead mint condition might
    get $1000.

    I pretty much agree with .2. If yours is in average-pretty-good
    condition and sounds good, it's probably worth around $800 on the
    hand-to-hand market.

    Recently looked into the BlueBook value for a D-12-35 made in 69.
    (One of the first of East Indian rosewood ) and was told it was worth
    about $500 private sale, $350 trade-in. Seems low to me, particuarly
    with the nice sound and easy action. So I'm a-gonna hold on to it.

1099.5Are we talking about 12-strings?ZYDECO::MCABEEles haricotsTue Jan 31 1989 17:365
    Is yours a 12 or 6? 12-strings are just not as saleable as sixes.
    If it's really a D-35 instead of a D-12-35, I still say it's worth
    something in the $800 neighborhood.

    Sorry it took so long to respond. Mine's a D-12-35, 12 string.
    It has a 12-fret to the body neck, slotted head, 3 piece back,
    bound ebony finger board, ebony bridge. These were famous when
    Paul Stookey of Peter Paul and Mary played one in thier HeyDay.
    I've been using silk and steel string tuned at standard pitch,
    the thing has excellent action and sounds better all the time.
    And worth more to me than money. But if I go belly up, I'd think
    it worth $800. You won't be able to find anything for that much
    that sounds half as good. Still, I want to keep it as long as I
    can.
