973.0. "Pickup Wiring Advice Needed" by FSTVAX::GALLO (Tom Gallo - Field Service Training) Fri Nov 11 1988 13:51

I need some information about pickups and pickup wiring.

I have a Fender Bullet bass. The bass has a split pickup
    like the P-bass.

About a year or so ago,the one half of the pickup died.I'm
not sure exactly what happened, but it had to be replaced.

I ordered a replacement from MCS in chicago and installed
    it.No problem.

It now occurs to me that the wire colors on the replacement
are different than the original.I just hooked it up like
it seemed it should be.I know,"seemed" sounds so positive,
but I'm sure I had good reasoning at the time.

    Anyway,on to the question.

What is the effect of wiring a split pickup "out of phase"?

How do I tell how it should be hooked up?

    Is the first question valid?

    Thanks,

    Tomg

out of phase makes the pickup sound very thin and bright....

In theory wiring half of a *split* pickup out of phase on a bass
should make little difference as each half only sees two strings.

    Re: .-1

    	Sounds reasonable to me.Thanks.

    	Next question:

When talking about a split pickup,is there a difference between
the half that goes under the E&A and the half that goes under
    	the D&G?

    	I ask this,because I ordered a "front" and a "back" when I
ordered the new pickup. The arrived with no marking whatsoever.
I just installed the first one I grabbed.

I don't believe there is any difference in the two pieces whatsoever.

I would think as per the previous reply that it would have little
or no effect as the pick up is split and therefore each half is
    dedicated to two strings only.
Has the replacement pickup altered the sound of your guitar?

    Re: .-1

    	I already tried that,to no effect whatsoever.Thanks.

I think they don't really make any difference, though,as
they only pickup two strings each.
