968.0. "Tuck Andress" by FGVAXR::MASHIA (We're all playing in the same band) Tue Nov 08 1988 17:55

Yet another guitarist to check out:

Tuck Andress, of 'Tuck & Patti', a pop/jazz duo on the Windham Hill
Jazz label. She's got a voice that'll make you cry, he's got chops
that'll make you cry for a different reason.

A one-man-band accompanist, plays bass, rhythm, lead, and percussion
simultaneously. And very, very, clean. Fingerstyle on what sounds
    like a hollow bodied electric.

I remember reading an article by/about him in Guitar Player(?) a
while back, in which he described the ordeal of learning to cover
all the parts at the same time. He might have done a Soundpage,
too, but I hardly ever listen to those. I thought it was fascinating
reading, but hearing the results (my second ever CD!) blew me away.

He only does one "solo" piece, but all his 'backup' work could stand
on its own, IMO. Check him out.

Another vote for checking out Tuck Andress.....I don't have the
CD yet but I've heard bits on the radio plus a live performance
a few weeks back on "Good Evening".

I heard of Tuck Andress through a buddy of mine who took lessons
from him out in Palo Alto - definitely an awsum player - he played
at Berklee in Boston this past summer. Would you be able to tell
me the guitar player magazine article he was featured in - I'de
    like to check it out.

968.7Tuck Comes To Boston: Sell Your EffectsAQUA::ROSTHum-dum-dinger from DingersvilleTue Dec 13 1988 17:1218

Well, I saw Tuck and Patti at Berklee heading up a triple bill of
the Turtle Island String Quartet (OK, but not too exciting) and
    Liz Story (zzzzzzzz).

They sounded pretty much like the album, except that most of the
tunes were stretched out with Patti scatting and Tuck taking some
    short solos.

His solo spot was Santana's "Europa" (!!!????) and he was more than
up to the task. Watching him play was pretty interesting as he
uses a lot of unorthodox right hand techniques.

His stage setup: no amp (!!!), a volume pedal, an old jazz box with
    Bartolini pickups.

No amp? I assume you mean he was patched directly into the PA? Very
    strange.

968.10Love WarriorsAQUA::ROSTIt's the beat, the beat, the beatWed Jun 14 1989 14:2412

The new album is called "Love Warriors", Windham Hill 0116.

Pretty much like the first album, half standards, half pop tunes.
This time out Tuck's shopiece is Santana's "Europa" which he did
live at his Berklee appearance last year. He and Patti also do
a Jimi Hendrix tribute, doing "Castles Made of Sand" and "Little
    Wing" as a medley.

One listen isn't enough to decide how good it really is, as the
music is quite subtle. If you were bowled over by the first as
    much as I was, though, it's a must-buy.
968.11Classy Jimi tributeMISFIT::KINNEYDEasier it looks, the harder it hooksThu Nov 16 1989 13:569
I hardly ever watch eMpTV but the other night I caught Tuck and Patti's
Castles Made of Sand video and was impressed. As was mentioned earlier, a
very subtle and expressive version. I really enjoyed it.

Now I figure I'll have to get some CD's or tapes as I am just
discovering these two. Anyone got a discography or a "must" list
to point me to the best of.

There are only two releases, both on Windham Hill, "Tears of Joy" and
    "Love Warriors".

I recently picked up Tuck Andress's solo effort "Reckless
Precision" release on Windham Hill WT0124 a few weeks ago. Though not
really a mainstream jazz guitarist, but without question a very talented
instrumentalist. At times I found his playing humorous in some ways as
his arrangements of certain pop tunes were quite good.
As to recomending it for other listeners who have heard Tuck and
Patti and couldn't get enough guitar out of the releases I'd recommend
it highly,if you liked what you heard with P,you'll enjoy this more!
or....
If your not familiar with T&P and want to hear some real nice contemporary
solo guitar playing it's worth it.

    Wow!

    A nearly dead note :-)

Anyway Tuck & Patti are far from dead, in fact I just got tickets to
see them June 6th at Berklee in Boston. I'll bring back a report.

PS: His last album, the xmas one was great, a pleasant change from most
    of that fare.
