711.0. "Music Stores in Boston" by WFOV11::ADAM_M () Wed Jul 06 1988 05:34

Within the next two weeks or so, I will be purchasing a "new-used"
guitar. I am hoping on getting a Strat somewhere in the mid-70's,
give or take a few years. The only problem is the music stores out
here in western Mass. don't carry many, if any at all, that look
    decent for the price.

Do any of you know of any good music stores in the Boston or
Worcester area that carry these in stock ?

Another quesiton, I am willing to spend up to $500 for a Strat (used),
do you think that's enough ?

    Thanx.....

I would try the "GUITAR GARAGE" in BOSTON located right next to
Fenway park. They specialize in older used guitars and had quite
a selection of strats last time I was there.

Cambridge Music Center, Porter Square (Mass. Ave.) in Cambridge.
They always have a good selection of 70's (sometimes 60's) Strats
in stock, and they get a good turnover so there's something new
coming in all the time. Last time I looked, mid-70's Strats were
    going for about $450.

711.3Fender Custom ShopGLIND1::VALASEKWed Jul 06 1988 19:4119
    Just a suggestion...

Check the Fender Custom Shop. They can build a guitar anyway you
want it. You could get a "new" strat with a 70's style neck if you
want or whatever. I just had an American Standard built with an
extreme "V" maple neck/maple fretboard with a satin finish. It took
a while but the neck is so sweet. All-in-all I only paid 575.00
for everything, including case. The only drawback, it took a while
like 6 months. I didn't mind because I already had a good guitar
to play, I just wanted something that I could stick with. I tried
a variety of necks before settling on the one I got.

Bottom line is the guitar is great, and I plan on keeping it for
a good long while, till it is unplayable if necessary. If you don't
mind waiting check out the custom shop, they do good work.

    Regards,

    Tony

Since you are from Westfield, I would check out Worcester stores
first. You can save yourself an extra hours drive, not to mention
all the traffic headaches in Boston. I would suggest you try
Wurlitzers' and Kurlan's in Worcester, MacDuffs' in Shrewsbury, and
Mr C's in Marlboro before you make the trip into Boston. The best
deals would be from Wurly and Macduffs. Kurlan is a Fender dealer,
but their prices are kinda high.

Is there any special reason why you want a 70's Strat. From what
I understand the new American Standard Strats are great and the
    price is reasonable. I had a 1971 Strat and I sold it. I didn't
like the neck, especially the micro-tilt.

Also, if you don't mind saving a couple hundred bucks, you might
check out the Tokai and Fernandez Strat copies. Some people think
they are as good if not better than some of the new ones.

    Good Luck

The last entry in here was over 2 years old so I thought I'd ask for an update.

My best friend and I want to go guitar shopping on a Monday morning in the
Allston/Boston area (before going the the Red Sox opener). We'd like a store
that had a good selection of used guitars - some Strats, some Les Pauls, maybe
a PRS, etc. Mr. Music seems to be one possibility. Where would you go?

Where is the best place in Boston/Alston to test drive some good used guitars?

Mr. Music is the best place I know of. There's a couple of places
downtown that deal in "vintage" stuff - one is next to Jack's Drum Shop
near Berklee, the other is on Newbury St across from where Wurlitzer's
used to be. But neither had much of an inventory, just a few rare
oddities. Mr. Music has the largest selection of used stuff I've seen
in one place anywhere around Boston.

Two recommendations: both Cambridge Music. The original store
is in Porter Square, Cambridge. They've recently opened a new
shop downtown, around the corner from Jack's Drum shop; it's
where East Coast Sound used to be. Both stores usually have
good selections of reasonable used stuff, and the occasional
jaw-dropper vintage piece. They are GREAT people to do business
with, probably the most professional and trustworthy you'll find
in this often shady business. Tell em I sent ya.
