665.0. "Pastorius effect & MIDI" by BARI01::MASELLI () Tue Jun 07 1988 12:58

    Hi there,

    For all bass players... (and more)

    Some  little problems

    1- I've a KAWAI freetless bass and I would to obtain the Pastorius
       (Jaco) effect. The bass have only 1 pickup with three switch position.

       Can you suggest me about a new pickup or effect or string for it ?

   2 - In Italy I've not found a MIDI pickup for bass guitars.
       Do you have any info about ?

   3 - I've a Rainbow 100. Exist on market a MIDI interface for it ?

    Thanks for cooperation and ciao

665.1Jam haunted by Jaco's spiritDREGS::BLICKSTEINThe height of MIDIocrityTue Jun 07 1988 13:1410
    Fred Abatelli seems to have the Jaco sound down to a T.

    We jammed last Saturday and in between tunes Fred played this 3 note
    lick that was just INSTANTLY identifiable as Jaco. The tone was
    right off the record. I had my back turned to Fred and I heard that
    lick and almost instantly felt like Jaco was there in the room.

    Tell us Fred, how do you do it?

665.2No MIDI for RainbowRUGRAT::POWELLDan Powell/274-6608Tue Jun 07 1988 13:328
    There are no MIDI interfaces for the Rainbow. Even you were able
    to construct one you'd still have to write your own software.

    This was one of the reasons I dumped my Rainbow.

    See NOVA::COMMUSIC for more on this subject.

665.3No MIDI for bass.....JAWS::COTEAre you buying this at all??Tue Jun 07 1988 13:3812
    A pitch-to-MIDI converter for a bass guitar is almost bound to be
    unsatisfactory. The strings simply vibrate tooooooo sloooooowly
    to give a reasonable tracking time.

    Now if you had some real thin strings, tuned up real tight and a
    synth which could transpose down a couple octaves...

    Pitch-to-MIDI is just barely acceptable (to some, not me) on the
    low strings of a standard guitar. There's still alot of work to
    be done to make it work well on a bass...

    sorry, my previous reply was a bit facetious. The only effect Jaco
    used I believe was a bit of digital delay; try a cheap stomp box.
    The main ingredient was of course the vibrato produced by Jaco's
    fingers; roundwound strings (if you don't use them) should help,
    and set your bass to its most trebly setting. Ciao

665.6You Need Roland For MIDI BassAQUA::ROSTLizard King or Bozo Dionysius?Tue Jun 07 1988 14:3813

    Roland made some basses that plugged into the GR77B synthesizer
    which had a MIDI Out. You need both pieces, though.

    Both Pedulla and Steinberger have made guitars with the Roland
    electronics, they *may* have made some basses, but you still need
    the GR77B synthesizer.

    To date, Roland has not marketed the bass electronics separately
    (as they have the guitar electronics).

    The GR77B, by the way, does *not* support pitch bending (can you believe
    it???); it's basically a "bass" version of the GR700 MIDI guitar synth.

    Hi There,
       You know, I read all the other replies "before" I decided to
    reply to Valters note. Let's think for a minute here. Wasn't
    Jaco playing in Weather Report "before" midi? Didn't he have that
    "tone" before all the computer jazz? Sure he did! I hate like heck
    to give out my secrets...... so I won't!

    OK.... I guess it can't hurt.(?) Jaco's toys back in the "Weather
    Report" days were pretty simple. Chorus, Flanger, compressor and a
    multi-head tape echo unit. Simple huh. Chorus and flange give that
    watery effect, but don't add too much other wise you will sound
    like you really *are* under water, compressor because you need it
    and the multi-head echo, because Jaco liked to layer tracks in a live
    situation.
    As for the way I do it?
      Sorry, confidental information. I'll give you a hint though.
       "Harmonics"!
         1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Harmonics!

    I tried out a !!! 5-string fretless Steinberger !!!! on Sunday.
    The fretless seems to be a requisite for the Jaco sound; and the
    Steinberger helps a little too. Although you may end up sounding
    like Pino Palladino (like on 'Sunset Grill'), which ain't necessarily
    a bad thing.

    BTW...the 5th string didn't do too much for me (it was a C), maybe
    if it was a bottom B.

665.9Fred Pastorelli ..or Jaco Abatorius..? BARI01::MASELLIWed Jun 08 1988 09:1426
    Fred,

    Thanks for your reply (serius reply..) and asap I *must* try to
    use the effect that you suggest (after string swap..Fender are best?).

    Yes, Jaco playing in Weather R. before midi, and I won't use midi
    for playing it.

    My problem was started when I playing "Donna Lee" because the notes
    was the same, but the sound...no comment (sigh).
    I'm sure that practice come first of all, but if you have a tool
    for help (effect), the results come just a little before (..may be..).

    Thanks again Fred (or Jaco ?..)
