604.0. "PG-380 MIDI GUITAR *NEW*" by NYJMIS::JENKINS () Mon Apr 25 1988 13:20

I just tried that new Casio PG-380 midi guitar that has the
built-in sounds. Now, before you all pooh-pooh the idea, it's
an Ibanez built guitar that feel really nice as an instrument..
and it has a built in Casio VZ-1 (not even on the market yet)
synth. It works like a charm! It tracked as well as any Midi
guitar set up (with no unsightly pick ups stuck on the guitar),
and all you have to do is plug it in! It had the usual array
of synth sounds (64 pre-sets) plus a ROM card can be stuck in
    the back with additional sounds.
It's a bit heavy...heavier than my old Les Paul. The fret
board is ebony, a pleasant surprise, Alder body and maple
neck, BUILT-IN TUNER (finally!!!), and comes in black or white
finish. It costs, though (but if you price any of the midi-
guitar set ups, its not much more). List at $1499. My dealer
has $1100 on the price ticket. This will surely come down.

Try it out, at least!! It's a blast to play, and if you don't
like the idea of hauling a synth along with you and patching
all kinds of midi cords....you can amaze your friends.

Where did you see this beast? What is its relation to the MG 500
and MG 510s already discussed in this notes file. Oh and one last
thing, can it be re-strung for leftys

    Thanks

I saw it at a music store in Phillipsburg, New Jersey (not
exactly the hub of the universe). The dealer is Dave Phillips
(a long time friend and "latest gear" afficianado).
The MG-510 is the exact same guitar without the sounds on board
(he had them there, but I didn't try them out). The reason I checked
it out was to "hear" the VZ-1 sounds (my husband won a Casio sampling
contest and has $1400 worth of casio gear to select...we figured
on getting the VZ-1 when it comes out, but after playing this guitar
    we may go for it..).
I can't imagine that it would be difficult to adjust this unit for
lefty use. If you'd like to call the shop their number is
201-545-3313 (Music & Sound is the name of the store).
I forgot to mention in the orginal note that there are separate
outputs for guitar and 'synth' (as well as Midi out), so you could
still feed your straight guitar sound to a distortion pedal, etc.
And, you could feed the synths sounds to reverbs, etc.
