515.0. "Guitar Column??" by JACKAL::MURRAY () Wed Mar 02 1988 17:09

        This is in response to note 380, concerning a Guitar Column.
    I don't claim to be an expert, but I do have a good grasp of
    theory and would be more than happy to try to relate some of it
    to anybody who is interested. If you'd like me to give it a go,
    send a reply to this note and we'll see what happens.
        Please include some types of things you'd like to read about
    and I'll see what I can do.

515.1Just go for it!CSC32::G_HOUSEGreg House - CSC/CSWed Mar 02 1988 23:168
    Hey, great! I, for one, would still be interested in sharing in
    your knowledge. One subject that I've been wondering about lately
    is ideas on application of the modes.

    Thanks for volunteering, Scott!

        Greg,
         Can you be a little more specific? I'm gonna have to go to
    the books on that.
    Thanks,
    Scott Murray

    P.S. I tried to send you this thru the mail, but I couldn't reach
    your node.

515.4You write it, I'll read it!CSC32::G_HOUSEGreg House - CSC/CSFri Mar 04 1988 20:2016
    Scott - I'm surprised you couldn't get to my node, it's a cluster
    alias and is almost always up. Must have been the E-net.

    I've been taking some lessons and learning the modes. My instructor
    gave me a few ideas for applying them (certain 'rules'), none of which
    I can remember right now to give an example. Kind of like, if you
    have a major chord and you have a major second chord, what would
    be a good mode to use? Or maybe it isn't that simple...

    I'm sure there's a lot more information and peoples personal ideas on
    interesting applications of the modes. That's what I was interested in
    specifically, but feel free to write whatever you like, I'm just
    interested in increasing my knowledge of music in general.

    I ditto the request for the column. I have been playing for a long
    time, and I've found that I play by intuition and little else. I
    play pretty well, but if I had to explain a particular chord
    progression or lick to someone else, I'd be at a loss.
    Most musical theory from my past has vanished.

    I am game for most topics. For example, I've found the recent chord
    discussion in MUSIC interesting.

    Thanks for getting the ball rolling.

515.6Theory lesson in MUSICCSC32::G_HOUSEGreg House - CSC/CSWed Mar 09 1988 17:225
    For those interested in a basic music theory discussion, it looks
    like note #1906 in DREGS::MUSIC has some really good information
    in it and is still growing.
