184.1On at least one Eno album...CAM2::ZNAMIEROWSKIMarmalade, I like Marmalade...Mon Mar 09 1987 23:2611
He's on one of my B. Eno albums(Music for Films). Then again, all of
eno's music is very washed up and murky and you couldn't really pick
out a guitar if you wanted to. Can't think of any striking guitar
on the album. One track entitled "Slow Water" has Robert Fripp on
it, but I'll be damned if I can hear any guitar on it. Neat tune,
real spacey, but no noticable guitar. What is Frith like? Any
    albums to recommend??

I've got one Henry Cow album that my wife doesn't let me play anymore
and I have some stuff where he is a sideman..Material, Eno, etc..
Know any recordings where he plays relatively straight? I get the
impression he knows a lot about "traditional" guitar playing but
deliberately avoids it....Have you heard Glenn Phillips and Steve
    Tibbetts yet?
184.3was it something he said?RICKS::CALCAGNIFri Mar 27 1987 16:3810
That's funny, I also have a Henry Cow album that'll get my s.o.
out of the house pronto (John Coltrane does it too).

    re: Glenn Phillips

do you perhaps mean Glenn Branca? I haven't heard anything by
Glenn Phillips in the "experimental" vein. Maybe I haven't heard
    the right stuff?

    RE: -3

I guess you HAVE heard Glenn Phillips then...no, he's not overly
experimental, but he does use a lot of odd sounds in a rock band
context....his first two records "Lost at Sea" and "Swim in the
Wind" are more in an experimental vein than the Band records. I
think they are only available on cassette direct from Glenn these
days (used to be on Caroline/Virgin from UK).

Don't forget Frith's stuff on the first Golden Palomino's
record. Great stuff, that. Stout fellow! :-) Lots of good
stuff by Tacuma Jamaaladeen on bass, too. Can anyone give me a
	pointer to his stuff?

Jamaaladeen Tacuma records for Gramavision Records...they release
on chrome cassettes and CDs as well as LP.

Off the top of my head the only title I can remember is "Show Stopper"
there are at least three others. Also can be heard on some Ornette
Coleman albums (some he is credited as Rudy McDaniels, his original
name) and "Desire Develops an Edge" by Kip Hanrahan on American
    Clave records.

    re: -5
Glenn Phillips uses knee pads because he likes to dive to the stage
on his knees. His keyboardist, Paul Provost is from Grafton,MA.

A few notes ago someone mentioned Steve Tibbets. I've got
"Exploded View" and I love it. A friend recommended "Yr"
(is that the correct title?); does anyone know if this is on CD?
        What else has he done?

        Thanks in advance,

184.11Steve Tibbetts on ECMAQUA::ROSTWho could imagine?Mon Apr 13 1987 13:5614
    Re: -10

Yes, "Yr" is the correct title. It was released by Tibbetts himself
and therefore I'm certain that no CD is available. Don't know if
yoy can even get the record anymore.

On the success of that LP he signed with ECM. His two previous
to "Exploded View" were "Safe Journey" and "Northern Exposure"???
I have the former and it is very good. The latter I can't vouch
for but have no reason to believe it's not just as good. Don't
know if CDs are out yet on them. Check Schwann or the Green Guide.

I believe he has some other stuff earlier than "Yr" probably also
    out of print.

Random notes:

I saw Fred Frith perform solo at a club in Ann Arbor. He plays cheapo guitar
in (more or less) traditional fashion. I believe his axe was a Danelectro.
However.... he also plays table top guitar. Literally, a table with imbedded
pickups and guitar strings over it. He uses clamps for fretting, mallets for
picking/strumming and assorted devices (ping-pong balls, marbles, and various
body parts (his own) for additional effects). Needless to say, it was an
interesting concert. Try his albums Guitar Solos Vol 1 (the best), Vol 2, Vol
3 for an idea of what he sounds like. I believe they are on Virgin Records.

Steve Tibbets has two albums out on his own label. Yr is a fantastic
example of what you can do with a four track in yr basement. I have the
address at home if anybody wants it. Nothern Song was his first release for
ECM. In an interview, Tibbetts said he didn't like it. He was in Norway
and didn't have the artistic control over it. The next two releases are less
Manfred Eicher and more Steve Tibbetts.

How about Henry Kaiser?? I have a couple of duet albums (w/ Frith) and although
they are not for the timid, they both contain interesting sounds. He also
has a number of solo albums. My favorite is the latest "Marrying for Money".
It contains a number of dual guitarist tracks (John Abercrombie and Arlen Roth
to name a couple).

Also.. has anyone got Vol 2 of Fred Frith Live in Japan? I got it as a set,
but ended up with two copies of volume 1. I hate when that happens!!!

Anybody into Terje Rypdal?? Chaser kicks a$#!!

Also.. Derek Bailey. His albums w/ Anthony Braxton are very outward bound.
