103.0. "Stanly Jordan" by DONNER::STEWART () Thu Nov 20 1986 13:22

I know this subject was already discussed in music but this seems
like a more likely place to talk about it some more.

Last night I caught the Newport Jazz Festival '86 on PBS. One of
the feature performers was Stanly Jordan. I've been waiting a
long time to see this guy after hearing about him. All I can say
is...HE'S DISGUSTING....;^). Where did he come up with that
technique. I don't know what the first two tunes were but the
third was an original, very upbeat arrangement of Eleanor Rigby.
    AMAZING.

When I die, I want to come back as his guitar.

The first time a saw him was on a video (VH-1, MTV does not do this
type of stuff). He is very good. I later got the guitar player magazine
with his picture on the cover. I will get the date and let you know.
103.2Stanley J....Very hip!18461::KELLYJThu Nov 20 1986 17:349
Agreed..Stanley is very hip! When I first heard about him and his
technique, I thought: "Uh-oh, here comes another technical acrobat
with no musicality." Then, I saw him play on Johnny Carson and
he just totally blew me away with the music he was playing.

    Back to the woodshed!

Guess I gotta check this guy out sometime. Of course you
never hear any of his stuff on the radio. Anybody got any
of his records? Recommendations as to what would be a good
	intro to his music?

The only one generally available is MAGIC TOUCH on Blue Note (a
premier jazz label), also available on CD (and DDD to boot). It
has the aforementioned cover of "Eleanor Rigby". Jordan's a
fantastic guitarist, but I find I can only listen to so much of
him at any one time (possibly out of sheer envy :-)).

I also caught Stanley on the Tonight Show...he did GEORGIA ON MY
MIND. Yes, yes, yes...amazing. I'm wondering if he'd be as good
to listen to if you couldn't see what he was doing?

Well, for those of you guitar addicts who read the file this weekend
and who live in the Southern NH area, you can catch Jordan's
performance at the Newport Jazz festival which is being shown on
Channel 11 (Durham, NH) tonite (Saturday, Nov 22, 1986) at 10pm.

    I'll probably video tape it.

    Agree too!
I saw him recently at the Jazz Festival in Nice but still could
not believe my eyes !...and my ears!
Looked like 3 guitarists playing at the same time.
Lots of technics but lots of feeling and creativity too.

new album for Stanley Jordan called THE CLASSICS, on which he does
a variety of jazz and modern standards. Also saw he and Robert
Palmer do a stunning version of Nat "King" Cole's "Nature Boy",
    on the Tonight Show...

    Yeah,

My "good buddy" at work (who knows I'm into guitars) comes in on Monday
and says: "Hey Steve, I forgot to tell you that Stanley Jordan is at
Blues Alley in D.C....." I say: "All right!, when?" He says: "Last
Saturday night....." I'm not gonna repeat the rest......
