21.0. "Influences" by THRUST::DAVIS (Scott H. Davis) Thu Aug 21 1986 19:36

I thought an interesting note would be on noter's major influences on their
playing. I'll start with my list:

Steve Howe
Jimi Hendrix
Eric Clapton
Johnny Winter
Duane Allman
Jimmy Page
Carlos Santana
Jan Akkerman

      Here's one for you all...

Ever hear of John Michael Talbot? (Used to play banjo, dobro,
      pedal-steel, lead, if-it-had-strings-he-probably-played-it, with
an ol' blue-grass/country-rock group called Mason Prophet many
      years ago). A distinct style!

He has been most influential on me.

John McLaughlin, definately. He gave me the "lets push it out
into hyperspace (where things exist only for a moment before they're
blown away)" attitude about playing. I like to try things I've never
done before, playing lead anyway. I'm dissappointed a lot 'cause
    I'm simply not *that* good.

Garcia, Howe, Santana, Hackett, Jan Hammer and anybody else
who played melodicly with that distinguished *feeling* about it
    probably influenced me also -

Steve Morse - although I don't think nor have others said, that
I sound like him. It's more that he's influenced the way I
go about things on guitar. He also "inspires" (subtly
        different from influenced) me.

    Larry Carlton

One person that I hadn't heard until recently (via one of the "Rock
School" episodes) is Wilko Johnson - played, I think, with Dr.
    Feelgood.

Certainly an original style - sounds like he's playing lead and
rythym at the same time. Checkout the Rock School episode if you
    can.

p.s. I have the recently re-broadcast Rock School series on VHS
if anyone would like to borrow it...well worth seeing.

My earliest influences were local good-ol'-boys who played in honky
tonk rockabilly bands, or knew somebody who did. And, of course,
Duane Eddy. Through my college years, my main influences were other
    players I met (I guess I'm mainly a folk-processed musician), but
    also -

    Peter Yarrow/Paul Stookey
    Chet Atkins
    Earl Scruggs
    Joan Baez
    Chuck Berry
    The Ventures
    Los Indios Tabajaras

Later, during my classical period -

    Andres Segovia
    Julian Bream
    John Williams

    Still later -

    a multitude of fingerstylists, notably

    Duck Baker
    Ton van Bergeyk
    Leo Kottke
and people I hung out with

    Even later -

    Martin Carthy
    Tony Rice
    John McLaughlin
    Django Reinhardt

Currently, I don't pay very much attention to other guitar players.
I listen mainly to other instruments and if I like the music, I
might try to play it on the guitar.

I try to become influenced by my favorite musicians, but these
are the ones I have made a conscious effort with:

Jerry Garcia	- used to play along a lot with Dead tapes
Roy Buchanan	- tried to pick up some of his style
Jeff Beck - enjoy trying to play along with his albums
Jimi Hendrix	- NINE TO THE UNIVERSE is one of my favorite albums
			  to jam with
Tony Rice - Recently been trying to play along with either
Clarence White of these two to pick up their technique

I tend to be more influenced by groups, rather than individuals.
I look into the overall meaning of the music, rather than an
individual contribution by a single artist. Some influences are:

    	Foghat
    	Rush
    	Grand Funk
    	Jeff Beck
    	Robin Trower

21.20BIGALO::BOTTOM_DAVIDFri Sep 12 1986 12:1917
I tend to be influeneced by certain guitarists:

Eric Clapton (as a blues influence)
    Carlos Santanna (raw feel)
    Jeff Beck (awesome simply awesome)
Pete Townshend (more as a songwriter but also power chords)
Ritchie Blackmore (powerful LOUD leads, quick too)
Billy Gibbons (how to get 1,000,000+ tasteful licks out of the same
    12 notes :-))
    Duane Allman (slide)

Of course I tend to go to the roots for my blues influences these
days more than I used to. But these guys are the guys that I studied,
and in Beck's case still study, to expand my knowledge.

    		< Wilko Johnson >

I've just found this guitar conference and noticed a familiar name.
I'm from the UK and have spent serveral years as a pro guitar player.
In the early 70's I replaced Wilko in a band that was later to become
Dr Feelgood. He has played that black TELE for 20 yrs or so and
originally developed his style from a player named Mick Green who
played in a band called Johnny Kid and the Pirates. They had several
hits including a version of 'Shaking All Over'.

21.34what influences am I under?NATASH::RUSSOWed Aug 17 1988 16:4615

My biggest influences have been Jimmy Page and Jerry Garcia, I guess,
since its their music that I've tried to play more than any other
single guitarist. To a certain extent I've been influenced by Page's
style, but Garcia's style seems very difficult to grasp. The biggest
influences on my playing style are Leo Kottke, Peter Yarrow, Page,
Dan Fogelberg, Neil Young and Jeff Mason. That goes for acoustic playing.
I don't have any style with an electric ;^) Jeff Mason is a good
friend of mine who I met in college right after I started playing.
He lived next door to me and we jammed together informally for 2
years, so he influenced me more than anyone. He's a flatpicking,
string-bending Hoosier who sure can make his Carlos sing.

Back to Tony Rice. He's the hottest (read fast+clean+musically
rewarding) acoustical flatpicker in this space-time continuum.
Anyone wanting to bridge the gap between bluegrass and jazz needs
to listen to him. He got a Grammy a few years back. For you WLDWST::
types, he lives (or used to) in San Anselmo, CA. If you get his
"Manzanita" album, which (judging from the high polyester content
of everyone's clothes) was made in the late 70's, you'll see Ricky
Skaggs, David Grisman (in whose band Tony played), and Darol Anger,
fiddler who later sold out to New Age music.

    Just my opinion...

God, I hope you're ready for this...

Started out as Tommy Shaw and James Young back 83, then Def Leppard
(someone showed me bar chords), Ratt and Van Halen in 84 and 85, then
George Lynch blew my mind!!!!! And just when I thought I heard it all,
Joe Satriani "scrambled my brain", too. I bought transcription to
"Surfing With The Alien Complete" and only song I've been able to
learn(more like memorize) is "Always With Me, Always With You".
I think for me, Joe is more of a spiritual influence and a BIG
motivation factor. Maybe, I should just call him inspiration and leave
    it at that ;-)

As far as other influences goes, I like bands with 2 lead guitarists!
Like Tesla, Queensryche, Styx, Damm Yankees!(they're so new, they
really can't be considered influence, yet), Ratt, Night Ranger,
Def Leppard, and list goes on and on! I can honestly say that I

Yes, Nancy is the guitar player, and yes, she's blonde (sorry Chas).
She's also the one with the revealing costumes and leg kicks in the
videos, though I've never paid attention to that. :-)

Anne is the brunette who keeps gaining, then losing, weight.

BTW, I believe I once read that Nancy did _not_ do the acoustic intro to
"Crazy on You"; that was supposed to be the band's lead guitar player.
Forget his name offhand. Nancy plays rhythm guitar for the band. It
   is a cool intro, though.

21.60Roger Fisher, Heart's former MVPSTAR::DONOVANWed Aug 29 1990 19:0022
Yeah, I believe the "Crazy on You" intro was written and performed
by Roger Fisher, who has been out of the band for years.

I think he is a tremendous lead guitar player and a talented
writer. If you check the writing credits on Heart's earlier
albums, you'll be amazed at how many great songs he either
wrote by himself or with the others. Start with "Crazy on
You, Magic Man, and Barracuda, for starters.

He was involved romantically with one of the Wilson sisters, Ann,
I believe. The endo of their involvement spelled the end of his
    involvement in Heart.

He still lives in the Seattle area and has one or two albums out.
He also has developed his own guitar, although I don't think he
has managed to sell the prototype to any major manufacturer.

I'd love to see him rejoin the group, even though I know it's never
    going to happen.

    Brian

21.61Fisher triviaRICKS::CALCAGNIWed Aug 29 1990 19:1211
I believe the guitar Roger Fisher designed was called a "Fisher Trout".
Very bizarre body shape, worthy of the name. I seem to recall it
sported a number of unique features; the only one that I can remember
is a small amp and speaker built into the face of the body. This could
be used as a practice amp, but more interestingly could be used for
feedback effects when the guitar was also plugged into an external amp.
Kind of precursor to the active sustain gizmos popping up lately.

There are some killer tones and guitar parts on those early Heart
albums, and I always thought Roger was responsible for the majority
of them. Definitely ahead of his time.
21.62Nancy definitely plays it live!NAVIER::STARRSRV.....I can't believe you're gone.......Wed Aug 29 1990 19:438
re: the intro to 'Crazy On You'

I'm pretty sure that Nancy plays that intro on the record, but I can't swear
to it. But I am sure that she always has played it live, actually adding in
a bunch of tasteful licks and expanding on it. She's no slouch on the
guitar...

Yeah, I thought I read in GTFPM that Nancy did that intro. As a matter

Roger Fisher is indeed still around in Seattle. In fact I think he's
playing with his new band at the Bumbershoot music festival here this
weekend. Can't remember the name of the band but I'll find out. Also
    whether they've recorded anything.

Regardless of who played it, the 'Crazy On You' intro is indeed a fine
    piece. Has it been transcribed?

As for Nancy: sorry guys, she's married to Cameron Crowe, who writes
    for Rolling Stone magazine.

                              Back 2 influences

My biggest influence is JIMI HENDRIX
but I also have others that I Love 2 hear & watch
       such as...

       Joe Perry (Aerosmith)
       Randy Rhoads (Ozzy)
       Mick Mars (Motley Crue)
       Angus Young (AC/DC)
       Tom Kiefer (Cinderella)
       George Theroughgood
       Lita Ford (Yummm!!!)
       James Sparkey Rucker (Blues player)
Marc Bolan (T. Rex) theres beauty in simplicity.
The guy who played guitar 4 "Thin Lizzy"
& I'm sure I forgot some but 4 right now would like 2 include
Brian Jones who use 2 play guitar 4 the "Rolling Stones" but
passed away a long time ago, the stones never mention him much
anymore but he actually wrote the guitar to alot of their bitchin
old stuff like "can't get no satisfaction" he was a real talented
musician and in my opinion was the most talented "Rolling Stone"
If you ever get a chance to drop by your local library and
would like 2 read up on him, try the book titled "Death of a
Rolling Stone" it's very good reading.
I think it's neat how each Guitarist if he allows himself
2, can create his on sound & style... al of the above R Great
but... so R quite a few no names that I didn't list, all of
them are doing it either on a stage or album but its all a little
    different, kinda like fingerprints.
