614.0. "AXP150 External SCSI connector error!" by VAXSPO::RIOMAO () Thu May 15 1997 00:51

    Hi, I have a costumer, with a lot of AXP150 (Jensen) running Windows NT
3.51 with service pack 5. The machines was running very nice for years, but
last week they decided to put external SCSI RZ Digital disks (mounted inside
some Seagate expansion boxes); after this, when they try to copy a large
volume of files, from the old disks to the new on, the machine hangs (no
error messages or blue screen), to unlock the machine they have to turn off
and on.
   The costumer removed the terminators on the disk board, and on the
Adaptec 1740 SCSI board.
   I was looking for some article about "using external SCSI connector", but
I found nothing.
   Any idea?

   Thanks,
   RIOMAO - MCS, Brazil

    re: VAXSPO::RIOMAO

    I believe it has always been recommended that one runs external disks
    through a secondary SCSI host adapter. There are plenty of notes in
    here to that effect.

    There are also notes that say external drives can be made to work on
    the primary host adapter, but one has to be very careful about keeping
    SCSI cable length to a minimum and using high-grade cables and ensuring
    proper termination.

614.2The costumer will kill me :-(VAXSPO::RIOMAOThu May 15 1997 01:549
   Hi Bill, you are always helping me. I think I have too agree with you
(note 601 tells the same).
   It's a real bad news, cause this customer wants to change all this
machines by Intergraph Pentium servers, and it's a good reason to do that.

  Thanks again Bill,
