607.0. "External and internal disks" by 45862::HILTON (Save Water, drink beer) Wed Apr 09 1997 18:34

    I have a DEC 2000/300 with a single Adaptec 1742, connected internally
to the CD-ROM, two RZ28M, and one RZ26l disk.

I have tried to connect a Storageworks BA353 with two RZ26 disks and a
    TLZ09.

I've had all sorts of problems, the system can't see the TLZ09 from
console whatever SCSI ID I set it to, however I settled on leaving it
out and it could see the 2 RZ26 disks in the pizza box.

However after getting NT 4.0 workstation up and running I got frequent
    hangs and crashes.

Switching off the BA353 and my problems have gone away.

Any idea? I logged a hardware call and the TSC said I needed to
purchase a second Adaptec controller, which seemed a bit over the top!

    Cheers,

    Greg

    Hi Greg,

My memory is failing... but I seem to recall the recommendation NOT to
attach any devices to the external port of the primary 1742. Signal
integrity on that particular SCSI bus is very picky. Use a secondary
    SCSI card.

I've done this, but you've got to be very careful with the
    scsi cable length and termination.

Ok, anyone got a spare 1742/40 I could have?
