300.0. "Bug with V1.6 firmware upgrade?" by MQOOA::LEDOUX (Vincent Ledoux@mail.dec.com) Tue Feb 18 1997 20:05

    I already asked Dave P., but is anyone ever succeeded
    upgrading the newst AXPPci33 firmware (1.6) from the
    v3.8 CDrom?

    My customer says it works fine with the 1.5 CD/floppy,
    but 1.6 goes into a black screen mode, nothing on
    the S3 graphic adapter, nothing on COM1. A power reset
    brings it back alive to V1.5

    Originaly his boards came with v1.4

    I do not have my AXPpci mounted and it would be a
    major pain to try to get it going again. He only
    has 1.6 ftp'ed from the main web site.

    Any info welcome.

    Vince.

Vince,

I have tried the CD on AXPpci33 and it worked on 166/233 systems without
any problems.

What is the configuration of the box so I can re-try.

    Thanks Iain,

    I do not have the exact config, but he told me he is using
    some S3 trio VGA and basically nothing else out of the
    ordinary. (SCSI CDROM, floppy etc..)

    I suspect that it may be either a bad board (he only tried
    this on one board) or some garbage left in the NVram.
    I have had problem with this (see my note 6 months ago).

    I asked him to swap the dallas chip and try an other board.
    If the Dallas, it should be easy to fix, if not, he will
    send me the board so i can have a close look at it.

    A hint that lead me to believe that the NVRAM may be bad.
    is that when he use the SRM console doing a "show" crashes
    the system and does a reboot. (Console v1.5)

    I am waiting for the customer answer.

    I will be updating this note.

    Good day,

    Vince.

    interim...
    based on discussion off line with Vince, i pulled a floppy copy
    of the arc .exe off the publically mounted copy of the FW CD.

    I used that to sucessfully update an axppci 33.

    (System and i am in Ayr, this is posted via eXcursion to my vms box,
    in SHR. thence BACK to the notes file in Ayr. The excursion is running
    on the AXPpci 33 updated as a test: 233 Mhz, 32 M, 500M drive,
    Stealth/ISA Video)

    regards

300.4Beware.MQOOA::LEDOUXVincent Ledoux@mail.dec.comTue Feb 25 1997 16:1814
    According to the feedback from my customer...

    The problem is that the new firmware upgrade program
    does not like the S3 Vision 968.

    (beware: It also do not work anymore with the ATI.)

    If you upgrade the firmware using some other graphic
    adapter, then the S3 can be put back and work under
    firmware 1.6

    Regards,

    Vince.
300.5No S3 Vision 968HELIX::SONTAKKEMon Mar 03 1997 19:235
    Assuming you guys are talking about SRM console (and probably Digital
    UNIX) S3 Vision 968 was never supported card. Put S3 Trio 64 there
    (the Digital buyout card, find the part number from the SPD)
