297.7Is getting your own quotes worth it?RINGSS::WALESDavid from Down-UnderWed Mar 05 1997 10:379
G'Day,

I'm about to replace my car and was wondering what others had found as
far as pricing is concerned. Did you find that ORIX was able to come up with
the best price or were you able to get better quotes yourself? I'm probably
going to blow the benchmark by $2-3k so it is in my interest to get the best
price I can.

    re .7

A colleague of mine (and yours obviously) was able to get a better
price negotiating directly with a dealer than the one ORIX quoted, so by
all means get some quotes yourself. If you get a better price elsewhere
though you might want to make sure that ORIX then does actually buy
from the dealer giving the quote. These dealers are often a little
unmotivated about quoting for fleet car purchases as it is.

Well, I'm placing my order today. After chasing about 4 dealers (and playing
one off against the other) I was able to get such a huge fleet discount that
the Orix guy got me to have the winning dealer resend his quote with the
discount spelt out in words, just in case one of the numerals was wrong :)

Orix didn't even try to come near it and just said go buy it from the dealer.
It certainly pays to shop around in a capatalist society.

G'Day,

You aren't buying a Holden Commodore are you? If so, where from?

Wanna collect from Brisbane? (The noter appears to be based in that
    city.)

heh heh, the best Holden would do me was $3800 on a CrummieDore S. Mitsubishi
dealers consistently gave at least $6000 on a Mitsubishi Maggot and I said
yes to $7913 fleet discount on a Magna Altera LS (which made it cheaper than
the normal Altera model). Ford could only manage $4900 on a Futura so the
choice was pretty obvious. The last one was a CrummieDore and that was one more
than enough.
