4200.0. "The Immortal" by SALEM::LEIMBERGER () Mon Oct 15 1990 13:00

    I spent the better part of the weekend playing "The Immortal" from
    Electronic Art's. The Graphics are very very good. I like the sounds,
    and the music. The game is a graphic adventure,and is a good mix of
    arcade action,and problem solving. The game will not support Hard
    drives,externaldrives or anything but a 68000. I don't mind this
    because after the initial load time(quite long) The game moves quickly
    and upon death the restart is very quick. At the end of each level you
    are given a code(WRITE THIS DOWN). Then when you start again you are
    asked new game?. If you answer no you are prompted for the code. This
    will allow you to start at the beginning of the level you were on when
    you last quit. You are quized once more for the copy protection. After
    that when you die you hit the fire button,and are dumped back at the
    beginning of the current level. So far the play has been very good,and
    I find myself stuck at the end of level two. I need to solve a puzzle
    in order to advance. Of course when I restart tonight I'll have to redo
    level two from the start. While this is sometimes a pain, I find that
    the practice in battle is probably going to be necessary to get through
    the game. The game is constructed in a manner that will teach you as
    you go.
    	An example is that on level two you must purchase an object. Well
    when you attempt to do so you don't have enough money. Walk away come
    back and you get a cheaper price. This lets you see how you can
    interact,and also that you can barter later in the game. Of course once
    you complete a level it only takes a short time to run through it so I
    will be at the puzzle in very little time. However it took me hours to
    get there the first time. This is how adventure games should work.
    Much of this time was spent because I failed to appriciate the authors
    ability to add subtle details. It is hard to discribe the game without
    giving a lot away. All I can say is I have died many different ways,
    fought a host of baddies, solved several problems(some that are not
    apparent), and enjoyed it all. I feel sorry for those that won't be
    playing the game becasue of the proccessor,Drive limitations. I find it
    worthwhile to boot the game,and don't regret doing so. It would be a
    five star game if not for these limitations. I got all the way too the
    end of level two with only one drive access. For actual playability the
    game is excellent,and even if you don't like this type of game it is a
    must see for graphics,and programming.

4200.1It's gorgeous!TCC::HEFFELPigs and PoniesSat Oct 20 1990 01:5417
    Just to echo some of the previous sentiments. It looks pretty, it
    sounds pretty, and it plays well.

    I *hate* the fact that it takes so long to load and that I can't put it
    on my hard disk. (It does some *strange* things while loading. It
    reads a track or 2 from the disk in df0: and then it polls df1: [the
    light comes on] then it repeats the process until the game has loaded.
    Ugly.)

    I'm not overly fond of the password system for "saving" the game. It's
    fine for Nintendo, but I have a disk drive (actually 3 of them) on my
    computer and would prefer to use it.

    Having said all that, I find it to be an engrossing and enchanting (all
    punning aside) game, and I plan to get back to it right now.

    I like the Immortal.. it has excellent graphics & sound and the music
    is really neat ! If you look at the latest Amigaworld they have a write
    up on it and it passes with flying colors.
    I wanted to ask you Bill & Gary if you knew how to get past the king
    with his 2 guards ??? I know that taking out the King is the key to
    progress but everytime I set foot into the room I get wasted !!
    Any tips ???

    Re -1

    I have forgot how to do the form-feed thing to hide the help I'm going
    to give you so I've put It a few pages below...

    If you like what you have seen in the game so far then you are in for a
    treat later on in the game.

    * Warning *  Tips below

    Here is a list of things you need to use to complete the king section ;

    Bag of spores
    Will-O-the-Wisps (or whatever their called !!!)
    Bread or water (I can't quite remember , it's either 1 or the other or
                    both)
    Scroll for controlling the Will-O-the-Wisps

    Have a go at completing it with the above info or if you are really
    stumped then I've put exactly what to do below.

    * WARNING *  Solution below

    You will have to kill the two Guards who are standing outside the room.
    This is quite tricky as they can sap a lot of your strength. Don't eat
    or drink to get your strength back up as you will need the bread or
    water (I can't remember which) later.
    Search the two corpses as one of them has an item which is needed.
    Enter the King's room but stay very near the door or the two guards
    will attack you, cast the spell on the will-O-the-wisps and they will
    attack and kill the two guards.
    Go over to the patch of earth on the floor and use the bag of spores.
    GET OUT OF THE ROOM VERY QUICKLY !!!!!
    Wait outside the room for a minute and then go back in.
    Go over to the King who will be near death now and he will speak to
    you, give him what he ask's and he will give you advice and an item in
    return.
    I'm sorry It's a bit vague in places but it's been a while since I
    played this section.

    Get back in touch if you need any further help.

4200.4I'll try it again...BOOGIE::TAYLORMon Jan 07 1991 20:118
    Excellent !!
    Thanks for the tip, believe it or not, I'd tried this with no success
    I guess it's a user error because when I tried casting the willow of
    the wisps in the room it didn't work. I also tried the spores to no
    avail but I hadn't killed the guards first so I had trouble casting
    them.
