4171.0. "New Star Trek Game!" by SHARE::DOYLE () Thu Oct 04 1990 16:46

	I recentley recieved a new (I think) PD Star Trek game.
      Although, it plays using english, the docs are in german.
	This looks like a great game.
        I'll u/l to Tape, if some kind soul could translate the docs
      to english I'd appreciate it.
        From the look of this game it takes place on one of the Movie-Enterprise
 type ships. It is very proffesionally done, and possibly the best to date.
        Unfortunately I can't figure out how to play it.

   Hi Steve,

       This one looks even better.

    I'll u/l it tommorow, ( I gotta warp it and put it on a cross dos
    disk).
      By the way, the one in Amiga World is already on the net.

ED,

Is this written by Marcus someone, with a choice to see the intro or
not, which has sampled music and sounds from the films? ie sliding door sounds etc

Myself, my brother and a friend THINK me understand the basics!

If we are talking about the same game I'll try and put some hints etc in here.

4171.5It's on Tape:SHARE::DOYLEFri Oct 05 1990 11:4614
 Okay, I've U/Led the new star-trek game up to tape.
 It's 2 disks in warped format.
 There labeled "Star1.wrp" and Star2.wrp"
 (hope someone can translate the docs...)

 re:-1
     It's not by jimbo barber, but I don't know if you can turn off the
    intro.
     The Main title screen shows a stationary Enterprise leaving a
    space-station.

4171.6Does this look like it?ODDONE::RANKIN_JFri Oct 05 1990 16:5274
    I found this translation of a star trek game in a newsletter from a PD
    outfit. I think it may be the same one (unfortunately I havent got it)
    as it was written by a German chappie, Tobias Richter. I,m not sure of
    copyright on this so please dont copy this translation.

    "THE GAME--The finished code is approximately 160K long, the source
    codes cover about 1/2Mb. On the 512K version I,ve simply left out the
    unneccessary sounds, but have changed nothing on the actual game.
    obviously it loses a little of the atmosphere. If you have more than
    1Mb of memory you can copy the data disk into the RAM so that speed
    will be increased.
    StarTrek can be steered 100% with the mouse but it needs to be
    supported by a joystick in PORT2 in order to steer the spaceships
    movements."

    "THE AIM OF THE GAME--There is no definite aim-essentially it is to
    remain Captain of the Enterprise. In order to achieve this, tasks must
    be carried out, the crew must be cared for and generally you must do
    the right thing! An irresponsible captain will be unable to hold his
    ground just as well as an overcareful one." (sounds like a good
    training course for Digital managers)

    "THE MENU POINTERS--
    Mainscreen 1-the bridge (from commanders chair)
    4 indicators are found in the middle.

    Top=impulse speed
    2nd=warp speed
    3rd=energy level recorder
    Bottom=damage to hull

    next to this on the left is an indicator for the momentary alarm
    situation. Under all of this is the star time indicator"

    "ENGINEERING--You can adjust the degree of repairwork with the slide
    controls. In order to carry out repairs enough energy must be
    available. During big repairs crew members can be injured. The speed
    can also be adjusted on the left hand side. NB: impulse speed can only
    be activated when warp1 is stopped. In the middle there are indicators
    for shield configuration and for the damage of the ship."

    "COMMUNICATIONS"-- the reports that have been announced through the
    pipe are given out here.
    NB: the reports are not stored in memory. Therefore it is recommended
    that important things are checked out immediately.

    Middle(condition) the alarm condition of the ship can be changed.

    Top(own message) this indicates all present announcements at your
    disposal which can then be sent with SEND IT."

    I think I should ask now--does this look like the same game? Also does
    this help?

    The translation goes on to discuss weapons, helmsman, navigator etc.

    If its the right one I will try to enter the rest of the translation.
    As I do not have access to the Network for downloading I would
    appreciate it if someone would agree to send me a copy on disk (I,ll
    send blanks of course).

    Best regards

    Jim

    P.S. I hope this looks O.K. I,ve only been accessing notes for a few
    weeks and this is the first one I,ve written. I should also admit that
    I am new to the Amiga and a non-techie so beware! --But i do intend to
    get the most from my machine.

4171.8Unwarping problemsCNTROL::HABANSun Oct 07 1990 04:3112
    Has anyone out there successfully unwarped star1.wrp & star2.wrp?

    I've been having some problems. On both files, nearly every track
    reports a "CRC Error", causing warp to sometimes hang, sometimes abort.
    I've tried warp v1.1 and v2.0, and downloaded the files from the
    net twice with the same results, so I'm pretty sure the file integrity
    is there.

    Any help is appreciated!

    Re: .all

    Well, I don't wanna spoil your fun, but there are two things to
    remember with this StarTrek game:
    1. It's written poorly, there several non-system conform things in
    there, like direct access to one of the WB bitplanes.
    2. It will be unplayable fast on anything else than a plain 68000
    machine.

    The author lives some 10 km's away from me, however I've been unable to
    contact him.
    As far as the game concept is concerned, it's the best I've seen in
    this category (but get's boring after a while, due to a limited number
    of possible "events").

4171.11I'll try again.SHARE::DOYLEMon Oct 08 1990 11:357
     Sorry, I'll rewarp it tonight. I used NFT copy/block/stream_lf on it
    to get it on the system, but I had some bad blocks on the 720k disk..
     I had to use Nortons to remap them. I thought it had been successful.

4171.12I couldn't unwarp it eitherMCDONL::BARRETTI will not skateboard in the hallsMon Oct 08 1990 13:012
    Is it possible to supply it as two .LZH files instead? It will be
    much faster to decode it and I've also found Warp files to be troublesome.
4171.13Lharc it is.SHARE::DOYLEMon Oct 08 1990 13:135
     Ok, I'll lharc it.
     But those with single drives will have to re-install the disks.

    If this is the one I think it is, there is a special boot block on the
    disk.
4171.15Bootblock= unrelated-intro.SHARE::DOYLEMon Oct 08 1990 16:035
     The boot-block is there for some-intro that has nothing to do with the
    game as far as I can tell. I started the game from an icon thats on the
    disk.

    How do you get energy to get the Enterprise into warp drive? I send a
    message to star fleet but nothing happens. Also, works on my midget
    racer equipped A500 although the "half screen pal->ntsc" trick is
    distracting.

4171.17All Set.SHARE::DOYLETue Oct 09 1990 11:2828
  Okay, an LHarced version of "STAR TREK (the future of mankind)" is on
"Tape::User2:[upload]" as STAR1.lzh and STAR2.lzh.
  I tested both these files after they were U/Led and they passed.
  I also included the PatchNTSC program from FF346 for those who like to see
 the full screen (game is in Pal).

	1. The Game is in Pal, when I first recived this I ran it from workbench
 (I've got a hard drive) using the 2 program icons on the disk.
  One is labeled STARTREK the other STARTREK512K, the first requires 1meg or
 more for all the sounds.
  When I ran it the bottom was chopped off, and I had a problem accessing
 certain icons.
  But, when the program is auto-booted up from the disk "STGAME", it eliminates
this problem by shifting the screen up higher.
  For those who don't mind missing some of the top screen, this is by far the
best solution.
  I've included the "PatchNTSC" program, for people who wish to see the whole
screen, or run the program from hard-disk. I haven't figured out if the
auto-boot disk uses preferences or another program to shift the screen up, and
I wanted to run it from my Hard-Drive.
  	2. This is the best PD Star-Trek Game I've Ever seen. The controls
 can sometimes be a bit cumbersome, and I wish it implemented the keyboard, but
 I think the graphics are outstanding (my opinion).

4171.18CluesODDONE::RANKIN_JTue Oct 09 1990 11:5626
    Here,s some more from the instructions translation then.

    CLUES

    On entering orbit try to keep the edge of the planet in the middle of
    the screen, later a cross-hair and a circle will come for orientation.
    Keep the cross-hair between the edge of the planet and the circle.

    On landing on the dock it is enough to see the gates of the entrance as
    the dock doesnt move. If you deviate too much the landing will be
    broken off.

    If the Transporter is broken and all the shuttles ar in repair you have
    to either wait or call in at the dock for repair.

    In the dock all repairs are carried out at top speed and the energy
    will be brought up to the highest level. This will take a while if
    there is much damage.

    With enemy attacks try and bluff first as this saves energy and damage
    and raises the morale of the crew.

    The more experience you gain the harder the tasks from Starfleet.

    I,ll post some more when I can. Is someone going to send me a copy?

     I have a request...

        I haven't been able to pull the warp de-arcer into my system and
    even if I did I would have trouble using it.

        I would like to ask if someone around the BTO area can make a
    working copy as I will be there Oct 26 for 3 week 9000 training.

        I will pack some disks with me thanks.
