4167.0. "LZCOMP vs LHARC" by DICKNS::MACDONALD (VAXELN - Realtime Software Pubs) Tue Oct 02 1990 16:14

A netter recently demonstrated some rather incredible performance
differences between LZCOMP.EXE and LHARC.EXE. The compressed file size
is pretty close, but the LZCOMP compresses and decompresses many times
faster than LHARC. Is LZCOMP available for the Amiga?

Test was done using the Oct 1990 NARC bulletin on a VAXstation 3200.
No options were used on any command.

                            LHARC LZCOMP
------------------------------------------------
Compression:
      Compressed size 395 405
      Wallclock 07:53 00:52
      CPU 05:36 00:21

Decompression:
      Wallclock 03:56 00:39
      CPU 01:07 00:13

But LZCOMP compresses a single file, right? LHARC will manage and entire
archive...

4167.2Don't forget -- LHARC is very new on VMSKALI::PLOUFFIt came from the... dessert!Tue Oct 02 1990 19:1911
LZCOMP together with LZDCMP are the VMS equivalent of the Unix program
'compress.' There's a nice version of compress in the Matt Dillon UUCP
package, any version from 1.00 on. The Lempel-Ziv-Welch compression
method used here is also at the heart of the ZOO archiver.

Given that compress and LZCOMP have been around for a few years, and
several versions, but VMS LHARC is only on its second revision or so,
I'd be very wary of speed comparisons. Amiga LHARC has shown
considerable speed improvements in the last couple of releases.

Also, if you are looking for faster LHARC functionality try LZ -
located at TAPE:: in the UPLOAD directory as LZ091.lzh.

It certainly seems faster that LHARC to me and it hasn't given me any
    trouble yet.

NOTE - LZ is compatible with LHARC not LZCOMP.

There is an LHUNARC about which is extreamly fast , but as the name
    implies only unarcs...

I'll upload it when I find it..
