4146.0. "Amiga, Unix" by Z::TENNY (Dave Tenny - DTN 291-8013) Mon Sep 24 1990 11:19

I'm looking for a low-cost but acceptable performance
unix box. I currently own an A1000 gathering much dust.
I'm mostly considering an 80386/33 box, but wanted to
check with you Amiga gurus about the latest and greatest
from CBM.

Does CBM have a Unix out yet?
What's the fastest box they're offering for running Unix?
What's the cost for an 8MB 200 meg disk configuration?

Thanks,
Dave

Will they be offering a Motif interface and development
environment? How much $$?

If there's no Motif, I take it there is some way to
access an Intuition graphics lib from their unix OS?

4146.2Real Soon NowKALI::PLOUFFIt came from the... dessert!Mon Sep 24 1990 13:5716
    Dave,

The Amiga 3000 will be released with AT&T System V Release {latest and
greatest} soon. I think they're calling it AMIX. The original release
was delayed considerably because of going to the newest version of Sys
    V. One of the universities in the Southeast has just made this machine
mandatory for its computer science students, although from comments on
Usenet it appears that Commodore will be selling them a pre-release
version of the operating system for now. So the answer in short is --
    "Yes, Real Soon Now."

BTW, there are other notes here from May or so discussing both the
Amiga 3000 (now shipping) and AmigaDOS v2.0 (now shipping for A3000
only, will be upgraded to final release later.)

The name AMIX is no longer being used. AT&T has allowed CBM to use the name
UNIX.

So it's Amiga UNIX.

I also believe that X-windows is going to be it's "default" windowing system.
Rumor has it that Dale Luck has been working with CBM, getting his X package
running under Unix. Introducing a non-standard windowing system, (for Unix)
would seem to be a big mistake for CBM. A Motif and/or X development
package would seem to be a necessity.

With Unix so close to shipping, where is the official announcement?

Regarding th GUI stuff, CBM is going with Sun's OpenLook<tm>
rather than Motif. This isn't too surprising, given the close
relationship between AT&T and Sun. Some other vendor would have
to port Motif to Amiga Unix... (sigh)

Don't forget that to get Motif, you have to license the package from OSF.
The OpenLook window managers is on the X11R4 tape, and there for the using.
If you've got a system that runs X11R4, you can probably fire up OpenLook
to poke at if you wish.

I did. I also looked at mwm (the Motif Window Manager). I run twm, and wish
I could have Intuition...

I'm interested in any more rumors, gossip, hints, "ins"
at CBM which might yield a ship date for this Amiga/Unix.
Also any gossip on 68040 based machines.

While I still have some agreements pending with my money
source for this endeavor, I hope to buy a unix box in the next
two months. My leading candidates for price/performance/software
are:

	NeXT
    386/33 clone and SCO_UNIX
??? whatever else I find, maybe Amiga ???

CLearly the only two I'm really considering now are NeXT and
386 boxes. Price and performance are my two real essentials.
I'm looking for an 8MB system with 300MB disk, and it should be
*fast*. I could go with any graphics interface, so Open-Look
vs. Motif vs. Display-Postscript doesn't really matter to me.

(I bought my A1000 in '85 for the OS, not the graphics!)

Look through comp.sys.amiga over the past week (no small task!). The guy
who is apparently supporting the Beta A3000UX systems at Virginia Tech (??)
recently posted a note about formatting an amiga partition. You could maybe
try to answer his question and then give him a few of your own :-).

My understanding (from Memory Location) is that Commodore is simply waiting
for AT&T to formally release System V Release 4.

You might want to keep in mind that if the Luxury tax is put into effect
over the next few weeks, I've been told that some consumer electronics
items > $1000 will get taxed. I'm not sure of the details (possibly
only mail order stuff). This is just a rumor.

I just ordered an A3000/25-50 on Saturday myself...

The only new machine rumor I've seen on Usenet is of the A3500 which allegedly
will be a tower version of the A3000 with a few more slots and bays.

The title of the note from the guy at the school in Virginia is
"3000UX AmigaDos partitions". Just saw it in the response of someone
else. The quoted material listed the guys address as
	flutter@vtcc1.cc.vt.edu

Also, I just came across this: (NOTE: 1 Aus $ ~ 0.83 US $)

Article 61018
From: soh@shiva.trl.oz (kam hung soh)

Subject: A3000UX - Brief, first impression at UNIX exhibition
Date: 1 Oct 90 02:55:24 GMT
Sender: news@trlluna.trl.oz
Organization: Telecom Research Labs,Melbourne, Australia

At the AUUG '90 (Australian UNIX User Group) conference and
exhibition, Commodore displayed a A3000UX. This was an A3000 with 8Mb
of memory, 100Mb harddisk, UNIX System V Release 4, TCP/IP, Ethernet,
TIGA 8 bit display card, and the X Windowing System. Also on display
was a standard 150Mb tape drive hanging off the SCSI port. The
demonstrator I spoke to was Johann George from the Technology Section.

As per new Commodore policy, Johann was reticent about new hardware
and software, and about how development in the UNIX area will affect
Amiga OS. He was also unwilling to comment on any new chipset or
graphic programming interface with regards to Amiga OS. However, he
did say that Commodore was doing work on improving the graphic display
ability of the Amiga. Johann was also quite willing to speak about
UNIX development work, and mentioned some of the effort in cramming
Release 4 into 60 - 70 Mb of disk space.

To add a human dimension to the legendary exploits of Dave Haynie,
Johann mentioned that Dave hardly sleeps and frequently bunks under
his favorite computer.

The A3000UX had the OpenLook interface on the X Windowing System
running on a 19 inch NEC 4D(I think) monitor driven by the Tiga 1000 x
800 (?) graphic board. Disk access speed was poor because of a hard
disk crash previously. Graphic display consisted on xterm (VT100 X
terminal emulator), ico (X's bouncing ball demo), clock, and a
graphical version of a 15 square puzzle. The updating speed the
windows was passable, faster than a Sun 3/60 but slower than a
SparcStation. A cute feature is the ability to have several login
consoles, reminiscent of a terminal switching feature on DECNet (I
think).

The Commodore Australia representatives verbally quoted me a price of
about A$8000.00, with educational institutions paying A$6500.00.
However, it would be best to get a written quote, since they did not
specify exactly what will be included in the package.

AmigaVision was on display, and I had a brief demonstration of how
simple it was to create a short presentation.

It wasn't the best demonstration of a computer I had seen, but to be
fair, none of the vendors at the exhibition were showing anything
spectacular. Most of them had X running with ico and xterm. It was
so boring that I was tempted to ask the demonstrators the company that
supplied the monitors! IBM had its R6000 workstation, DEC with
DECstations, Sun with Sparcs, .... Oh, The endless monotony of
workstation after workstation!

4146.11Unix.x windows at UNHSALEM::LEIMBERGERThu Oct 18 1990 11:336
I was talking to a guy a from UNH, and he said they had aquired the
romset to run unix from Germany. He said they are running unix, and
X windows. He also stated that Dale Luck could supply you with the
chips to run unix. I can't verify the part about Dale Luck, but it is a
for sure on Unix at UNH.
