4141.0. "FALCON - Operation: FIREFIGHT" by ACOSTA::MIANO (John - NY Retail Banking Resource Cntr) Fri Sep 21 1990 00:29

I got a flyer in the mail for a new Falcon Mission disk that is available
for, "sorry", the Atari: Operation: Firefight. This features
MiG-21, MiG-27 and Mi-25 Hinds. New weapons include the AMRAAM and
HARM.

I assume it will be availabel for the Amiga soon. Lets hope
they've straigtened out the LCOS HUD display.

That's pretty funny, cause If I remember the one I got it was for
        Amiga owners.

You don't suppose they mixed up the mailing list do you?

I was in the U.K a couple of weeks back and picked up the second
mission disk for falcon , I don't remember if there was a name on the
mission. I haven't had much of a chance to play it yet but was quite
pleased with what I did see. The hinds are neat and a bit slower than
a mig so there nice to dogfight with but they always hangout in pairs
so you have to watch for the second one sneaking up behind you.
Another feature is that long range missile (can't remember the name)
which can be fired at targets beyond visual range. From reading the
manual it requires you to do this for several missions , ie point in
the direction of expected incoming targets and let go.
Also from what I remember the enemy sam sites are shown on the threat
    or target radar.

By the way for any flight sim fans with F-29 retaliator , there was a
mission for this game given away on the disk in this months Zero
(a u.K mag) which involves taking off from a carrier and dogfighting
with some alien ships that look like romulan battleships ,which for me
was a pleasant departure from some of the usual crap they put on the
    disk.

I also got the Atari ST version of the mailing. I just threw it away,
as I expect most Amiga owners did.

I checked and it was the Amiga version. I suggest you just cross
out Atari and write in Amiga.

I plan on crossing out Amiga and writing in Atari (no offense
        intended).

At least they didn't send us one for PCs...

I recently bought operation Firefight and it is pretty good. I've been
flying at Major level and blew through all of the missions... piece of
cake !! The dogfights with 3 Migs is really good , it certainly keeps
you on your toes. The Hind helicopters aren't really a threat at all..
they aren't very realistic in my book.... they just lumber along
as if they were for target practice.
As usual ... lots of fun and action.

    Todd,

I just bought Friefight as well. I also have been enjoying it. I have
a question for you, did you take the missions one at a time, landing
after each one, or did you try and do more than one mission while up.

How long did it take you to fly through all of the missions?

    Thanks!

Yes, I landed after each mission but I took out as many SAM sights as
possible using the AIM-88s during any prior missions. I'm not sure if
you will be credited with multiple missions w/o landing successfully
after each one. There is the other friendly base to land/refuel and
rearm at which I haven't yet tried. I'm going for Lt. Colonel now so
I will try the auxillary base this time.
Time ... I believe I completed all of the missions at Major rank in
about a day (during christmas vaca.). That's why I was just a little
dissapointed in the lack of real threats as in Optn. Counterstrike.
I don't know if you've tried the higher ranks Lt. Col and Col but
handheld missles/Sams are a real Challenge to fly against. But a real
    blast !!!!
