| This looks all very nice but it has one problem --- it costs money !!!
Is there any PD Hardware/Software Hack to allow us DEC people to take
advantage of the fact that there are about 50,000 TK50 unused tape
drives out there.
It seems to me that most of hard work would be done by the controller
in the TK50 and just a bit of interface software and hardware is
needed.

and I think for less money, I could buy a second ST277 and do
disk-to-disk backup a whole lot faster.

The TK50 is VERY difficult to control. The Q-bus controller has
a 10 MHZ 80186 with about 128KB of code ( written in assembler ).
On the other hand, the TZK50/TZK30 are both SCSI devices that
follow the SCSI-1 specification. These should work with any of the
Amiga controllers that support SCSI Direct. Many of the Amiga
controllers are adding this to support Amigados 2.0 .

Disk to Disk backup doesn't solve the problem for most people.
Backup is not just having ONE copy of your data. What happens when
you find out that a file has been corrupted and your backup copy
has the same problem ? How about files that you deleted ?
As for cost, my 150 MB tape drive cost about $600 and the tape
cost $35 each. I do a lot of programming, I have about 10 tapes
of different ages.
