4084.0. "Problems with A1010 floppy unit" by KETJE::VLASIU () Wed Sep 05 1990 08:54

    This weekend my second floppy unit (A1010) gave me the first time the
    "UNREADABLE DISK" message (when using info command). At that moment I
    took off the disk and put it back and after it worked ok.
    ..But, yesterday when I started the Ami, no way to use the floppy unit.
    I had allways unreadable disks. The unit senses the presence of the
    disk but does not recognize it. It just does the usual disk access when
    I introduce a disk and nothing more. I'll try today to disconnect and
    connect back the unit but it seems to be well connected.
    Is it the unit faulty (if it was in the Ami the problem, I think the
    df0: would be affected too but actually df0: works) ?
    Has anyone had a similar experience ? Can I fix it at home by myself ?

    Thanks in advance for any answers,
    Sorin

    PS. I have the unit since 2 years now.

4084.1Check everything, then panic!SDOGUS::WILLIAMSTOPGUNThu Sep 06 1990 21:0810
    The floppy (internal and external) are controlled by (for DF1: and
    DF2:) U301 and DF0: is controlled by U300.  U300 & U301 are the
    Complex Interface Adapters (CIA chips). You may have lost a chip
    or (more likely) you have lost a drive. You may be able to adjust
    the speed (small pot on bottom side of the drive), but probably
    you need a new disk drive. One other thing to check (rare but
    possible) is whether your voltage and current are stable from the
    wall and thru the power supply.

4084.2Bad luck ?KETJE::VLASIUFri Sep 07 1990 07:5115
    It's bad if I have to change the drive. The fiability is really a
    problem in my case. When I bought the Ami, after 2 weeks of moderate
    use it died and was repaired under guarantee (the shop gave me a
    replacement machine for the 1 month repair time). My initial display
    CBM 1084 died after 1 day of use and I got my money back. I bought
    after a Philips 8833 which had image problems (the famous image pop) so
    I had to return it back and I got another one with the same problem and
    after one more with problem and .. finally the one I have now which is
    quite ok (slight pop). 4 monitors in total returned back (in 2 shops).
    And now after 2 years the floppy goes down. I shall not comment more. I
    wish at least the A590 continues to work as well as now the longest
    time.
    Thank you very much for the information.

    Sorry, I forgot to say that my initial A501 (memory expansion) had a
    clock forgetting the time and date so I had to replace it (under
    guarantee) the very first weeks..

    Maybe you should check your incoming AC power. Some household utility
    lines are notoriously lousy.
4084.5grounded?HYSTER::DEARBORNTrouvez MieuxFri Sep 07 1990 16:539
I was reading an old, old Amazing Computing last night. They said that if
your system is not properly grounded, you will get disk problems. If you
have a two prong adapter on your system power cord, the system probably is
not properly grounded.

Worth a look.

4084.6A1010 problem againNBOIS2::FRIESHURZ !!!Mon Dec 02 1991 12:3915
    Hi,

    I have the same problems with my A1010.

    It works well on my A1000 and A3000/Amiga Dos 2.0

    But when I boot KS 1.3, 'C:Info' says: "DF2: unreadable disk" or such.
    :-(

    trackdisk.device thinks that no disk is present if I insert one and
    vice versa.

    Any hints?
