4067.0. "Encoder/Decoder" by LEMAN::BURKHALTER () Fri Aug 31 1990 03:21

Can anyone recommend a good Encoder/Decoder to allow output of
images to video. I know I will need one to do this, but don't
seem to see many advertised in Amiga World for example.

Am I just being a bit dim, and they're being called something
    else in the adverts?

I use a Supergen 2000s genlock to to my decoding(actually the supergen
can act as a tricoder). while this is not a cost effective way to get
NTSC out of the Amiga, it shows one method of doing it. The module cbm
sells for the 500 would allow you to go to a TV,or tape but the quality
could be lacking. Can't remember the name but it costs around $59.00.
A company was making a device like this but it went under. You may want
to consider the A2300 genlock if you have a 2000. I find it lacking as
a genlock but should do NTSC ok. If you can go for the regular Supergen
got around $735.00 .Then you will have the ability to do fades,
genlock, and decodeing. I realize the cost is high but I would wait
until I had the money before I'd buy the cheaper Genlock. If you want
a quick, and easy way go with the 59$.00 unit just to put graphics to
VCR. Then you could look at other options later. This is a weak spot
now(wide open market) but I know of no other devices.

PS if you want I can call, and get the CBM product name,or possibly
someone has a used one for sale here. This will happen when they
go from using the TV to a monitor.

Thanks for the offer to call CBM, Bill, the problem is I'm over here in
Geneva, Switzerland and it would have to be PAL format etc.
I have spotted an Interlock Genlock from Spirit Technology in Julys
issue of Amiga World(still waiting for Augusts here!) it can:-

@NTSC or PAL encoded video outs (2),
     Key out, and R-G-B out

    @Overlay fader on/off, 0-100% fade overlay control slider,and
genlock enable on/off - ALL on front panel

@Control Panel may be up tp 25ft from genlock (dont know what use
     that is!!)

$479 - Do you reckon it would be any good?

Have noticed your interest in AutoDesks Animator etc, did you know there
is a new 3D package out called 3D Studio, it has: Modeler, Renderer,
                                                      Materials Editor,
                                                      and Key Framer.

It also has a price tag of $2,500 dollars but will work with
Animator which is apparantly to be updated for 32bit capabilities
for $1000 - all the more likely I'll invest in A3000!

    Dom,
I just last night picked up a working Demo of "Pro Video Post"
This program is really nice(should have it in two weeks). It supports
peels, spins, wipe, dissolves,on and on....... . I am not sure if it does
pal but I believe it does. After you boot the demo, you can run the demo
that depicts a news program, stocks, weather, sports etc. On exition the demo
display you can use all the functions for graphics, including the DVE
effects. Of course you only get to work with the intro title screen but
it allows you to not only try the program, but actually learn how to
use it. Loading a screen, and saving is of course not allowed. i can try
to build the disk for upload if you wish.
Spirit, has a fair reputation, but I'd try to see one in action
before plopping the money down. The supergen is close so check it out
also. I believe I have far surpassed anything AutoDesk can produce on
the PC by now,but haven't seen the program you mentioned yet. Will
check it out
							bill.
PS just ran the Mega REBEL demo from Switzerland Great stuff.
