3875.0. "Xenomorph - Sigourney Weaver where are you..." by GIDDAY::PETTERSEN (rust never sleeps) Mon Jun 25 1990 02:42

Anyone else out there been bitten by Xenomorph, the Dungeon Master
	set on Cygnus 61.

I've been playing this on and off for several weeks and it (in my
opinion) rivals Dungeon Master in the role playing/adventure stakes.

The animation is neat and the variety of creatures (xenomorphs)
seemingly endless. Down about 5 levels I've even found chest-busters
(for Alien (the movie) fans) complete with gory remains of their
'hosts'. Because of the way the aliens 'burst' when shot maybe this
game should have a PG rating.

Yes I've just started it - haven't had time to get very far yet,
Currently trying to get past the little round black buggers. When
they give off blue flashes, are they being sick, or are they
    giving me electric shocks?

Before you open the door which leads you into this lot, there are
various passages off the main one, leading to varoius rooms full
of screens etc. where you get your kit. Do the rooms with operating
tables, big eye-like screens etc. have any function??

    Cheers

There seems to be no way to lie down so I have stored their location
	for possible later use...

Yup the wee sentry robots are shooting at you. There is a machine
pistol on that level that reduces them to heaps of molten slag...

The other place to locate on the next level down is the recharger
which recharges batteries and ammunition clips. Also you should
collect the floppy disks laying about as they (in a disjointed
fashion) document the fate of the base.

3875.4Great fun....so adictiveAYOV27::CWILLMy sandwich is empty...Mon Jul 02 1990 10:3146
This is the first non-shoot'em'up or simulator game I've ever purchased
so I can't give a qualified opinion of the games merits as an
adventure game, however I am enjoying it immensely. My progress
so far ( these maybe spoilers )

I have reached level 5 ( the one with the big nasty blue B$#$^$$#
that cripples you in 4 swipes ).

I am wearing some mean looking armour, I have a 'Make my Day' Magnum
    and a poison dart gun.

I stripped the maintenance module on level 3 and the living quarters
in level 4. This gave me enough boards to reactivate my ships CNS.

I have to find an operating system and some navigational data as
well as fuel ( anti matter stuff I presume ).

    Q. What does the operating system look like ? ( is it one of the
red disks that seems to have nothing on it ?, I hope not I ditched
    them !! )

    Q. Ditto for the navigational system.

    Q. Is there any advantage to having the ships computer functioning,
or is this only of use at the end.

    Q. What use the personal communicator ?

    Q. Can those green blobs on Level 3 be destroyed, the best I can
do is stun them, I got a disk that the grenade launcher maybe
in the ducts level above level 3 ( not the one below level )
but I just cant survive, I fired TWO magnum clips, 2 laser clips,
2 Poison dart clips into one of these mothers and it just went
       Bllurghhh and killed me !!!

    Q. Will I ever be able to use my credit card again or is it permanently
       overdrawn and useless.

I have many more questions and possibly a few answers for other
    questions.

    Eagerly awaiting a reply,
          Chris ( Shunk, good God whats that....run !!! )

P.S. best laugh so far, being chased by my own mine after accidentally
killing its target with a fluke magnum shot.
3875.5BLLLHHUUEEEEAAAARRRGGGGHHHHHAYOV27::CWILLMy sandwich is empty...Fri Jul 06 1990 10:3117
Well I've reached the 8th level down, the only way further down
appears to be via more piping ducts. The game gets better, Ive found
an arsenal containing loads of amo, mines etc. Im desperatly searching
for the grenade launcher. I still can't deal with the green blobs
that go bhhllleaaar. I have an automatic machine gun, a particle
accellerator, a laser rifle, a pin gun etc. Still not mastered the
use of mines ( will readilly accept hints on how best to use them
    etc. )

Some of these levels are nearly impossible to map, but you HAVE
to, or else you miss an ID card or a set of stairs or a Grenade
    launcher.

Come on people, are you still playing out there ?

    Regards,
       Chris.
3875.6In the pressurised cavernREDBCK::paulprust never sleepsWed Jul 11 1990 23:0816
Yup, my five year old won't let me rest...

You can't recharge the credit card but there is a new one on the
armoury level (I wish the levels had signs at the bottom/top of
	the ladders.)

We are currently battling the ameoba found in the
pressurised cavern beneath the lowermost pipe level.

I have been faithfully mapping the levels on graph paper (at least
all the squares appear to be the same size). If there is interest
I will try scanning them on our trusty MD300.

Have you noticed that when you turn left/right the view pans rather
than cutting as dungeon master does - clever stuff...
3875.7Success !!!!!AYOV27::CWILLMy sandwich is empty...Thu Jul 12 1990 09:0016
    YIPEEE.

Success I have completed the game, and what a good one it is, Im
sure I could have done more things ( like find the $#%#$%$# grenade
launcher and finished a couple of partially areas of but that can
    always be done another time.

This is the first non-shoot 'em up game I've played, other than dungeon
masters does anyone know of a similar game.

This was great, it even made me jump occasionally, especially with
the manner in which you meet the aliens on the armoury level.

    Regards,
Chris ( who can hear those M.Oak engines hummmmmmm all night )

3875.8No food...not enough weapons...!SMAC10::NOBLEVery pooer. Very pooer indeed.Mon Aug 06 1990 12:2811
Still having one or two problems with this one. I'm playing with
the aid of a map from the July 'Amiga Computing' and even so I'm
getting grief! I don't seem to be able to get further than level
6 without my food, drink and medicine running out. I've got the
message re: the prices of food (ie don't buy pizza!) but I seem
to be a long way from a credit card and a fresh ID card for more
    medicine.

Also, the mines seem unreliable. You can press the switch on them
over and over, and once in a while they go off, apparently doing
no damage to anything at all. WHat am I doing wrong?
3875.9Keep on going, you can fight on an empty belly !!AYOV18::CWILLMy sandwich is empty...Mon Aug 06 1990 14:3869
	hmmm Level 6.

You're about 50% through the caverns and about 33% through the
game, the best is yet to come.........

RE : Mines spoiler maybe ?

I never had a great deal of success with these myself, maybe their
past their sell-by-date ?? or its a bug, or you need an instructional
    disk.

     FOOD and MEDICAL STUFF Spoilers

I found that HIT-RUN-REST-SAVE was the best tactics when low ( or
out ) of food / medical supplies. I hardly needed any medicine until
the very end and then it probably wasn't vital. The only advantage
food gives you is stamina. If you rest as often as possible and
use long range attacks you can survive without food.

Only the first level down regenerates the sprites, so I choose to
clear each level and map it myself ( half the fun !! ). Restore
do the level again, now its mapped I stand a much better chance
    in combat.

There where some BIGGGG ! green mothers I just couldn't kill, but
I could crystallise them for a while and once you've mapped the level
out you can run through it again and selectively pickup the bits
    you want.

The other credit card I found was in :

The arsenal, on level 7 ( I think ) there are dozens of Gravity
Walls that hold loads of good stuff, one of them being a credit
card, oh yes, check out the sleeping quarters, there maybe one in
    there too.

Make sure you check every level, some levels have 2 + down and ups
to areas that can only be reached. Im surprised a magazine managed
to map it, how many pages does it take ????, took me about 30 A4
    FOOLScap.

    Big Spoiler

Don't remove the radio active materials until the rest of your ship
    is ready.

The key disks are together and guarded in a VERY well hidden place,
you need to fire for ages at it to kill it, I emptied everything
    before it fell.

When disassembling computer systems remember the sequence of the
boards, leave ALL doors open and remember what chips are left at
    each station and how many.

Well if you've read this far thats enough for now.

    Regards,
Chris - Slayer of all that is not a green blob

P.S. When I played this game originally I only had one floppy drive,
the disks are well worn now !!!!!
3875.10Every day you learn AYOV18::CWILLMy sandwich is empty...Mon Aug 06 1990 14:408
Oh yeah forget to ask, what where the prices of food ? I never found
    that disk.

What type of armour are you wearing, the stuff I had was white,
and was so frightening it made me jump when I looked at myself :-)

    Regards,
        Chris.
3875.11BOO!SMAC10::NOBLEVery pooer. Very pooer indeed.Thu Aug 09 1990 08:0419
Food prices are printed next to the button for the item on the food
dispenser - I realised that from the manual, because they're not
    readable onscreen.

As for the green blobs - you can kill them!

    Spoiler

Use the needle gun found on the level before the blobs - three or
four shots and the blobs crytallise into a mass of green and eyeballs!

As for the map - the magazine printed it REAL tiny, and then only
to level 10, (I understand that there are 15 levels...)

    Thanks for the help,

    Steev
3875.12Getting kinda thirsty...SMAC10::NOBLEVery pooer. Very pooer indeed.Thu Aug 09 1990 08:067
AS for armour, I'm wearing as little clothing as possible. I had
to put the green suit on to make space for other items in inventory,
but you dehydrate a lot quicker with the suits on than without.
I even left off the helmet and boots except when in combat, just
to retain a bit of liquid.

    Steev
3875.13Why bother with food ?AYOV18::CWILLMy sandwich is empty...Thu Aug 09 1990 12:006
Why do you worry about thirst and hunger ? I continued on without
replenishing these for many levels and had no real adverse effect.

    Regards,
Chris - who is now going to play it again cos I wanna kill a
    green mother !
