Commodore-Amiga is on the verge of announcing UNIX on the A3000 (some
people were disappointed that the announcement wasn't made at the same
time as the A3000 unveiling, but that's another issue).
ULTRIX is a version of Berkeley UNIX that has been ported to the VAX
and MIPS systems and enhanced for the Digital customer base (which
includes Commodore-Amiga).

Symmetrical Multi-Processing support is specific to the underlying
hardware. The ULTRIX implementation of SMP has nothing whatsoever to
do with anything that might be done on an Amiga.
It might be possible to port ULTRIX DECnet to an Amiga-based UNIX
environment. I expect that TCP/IP will already have been done by
Commodore-Amiga.
There should also be an X11 implementation, so DECwindows would be
redundant.

I'd like to see the Amiga in some such role, as an alternative to
MS-DOS and Macintosh machines. Having been truly impressed by an A3000
running TSSnet (DECnet Phase IV) and X11 windows across an Ethernet to
a DECstation, there's ALREADY a lot that can be done, even before the
Amiga is announced as a UNIX platform.

| Also worth noting: Dale Luck, author of GFXbase X Windows for Amiga, is
currently consulting at Commodore in Pennsylvania. He hasn't said why,
but a reasonable guess would be something to do with Amiga Unix
windowing. BTW, Commodore will ship a port of Unix System V,
Release 4.
