3687.0. "Amiga to SCART connections" by VULCAN::GATES () Wed Apr 18 1990 10:07

    Hello,
Do any of you Amigoids out there know how to wire up a cable from
the Amiga to a SCART socket so that a TV can be used as an RGB monitor.
At first sight it looked quite simple:-
    	RGB outputs from Amiga
        RGB inputs to TV
but unfortunately the TV requires the composite sync to be mixed
in with the analogue green signal. This is only available as a seperate
output from the Amiga. Is there any way of mixing the analogue green
output and the composite sync output to give the TV the signal it
    requires?

    Thanks in advance,
    Barry.

When I bought my A500 I had no display but only my TV with a SCART
socket. So the first days I just plugged the Amiga monitor cable to the
TV and selected the video input on the TV (the direct not the
modulated). First time it was not synchronized but I switched once
OFF/ON the TV and all came ok. After I was switching on the TV after
the Amiga. The cable (if it does not came with the Amiga) can be found
    in any Amiga shop.
The only problem is that you cannot watch TV as long as the Amiga is ON
because you'll see the Amiga screen in continuous move on all channels.
Once you shut off the Amiga it is ok.
I used this only few days until buying a monitor which I also use as a
    second TV with the VCR.

Yes I use mine with the TV sometimes. I got an Amiga-SCART lead
from a company called Trilogic in the UK, and it works a lot better
than using the composite input, although you can use that if you're
stuck. I don't think you're right about having to mix the green
and synch together for a SCART connection - this happens with some
computer monitors which have, as you say, the synch provided on
the green lead. As far as I can tell, the Amiga is quite incapable
of providing this "mixture" facility. Both SCART and Amiga sockets
have pins for red, green, blue, sync etc. and it's just a question
of connecting them up (as long as you know the SCART pins - there's
a picture of the Amiga ones in the handbook. If you're stuck let
me know and I'll try and supply details of the connections, but
there are people on here who know a lot more about this sort of
    thing than I...

    Thanks for the info Rog,
I have tried connecting analogue red on amiga to red on SCART,
etc, but without success. I'm sure you need some kind of
synchronisation signal from the amiga to the TV to get a picture.
Maybe, I'll give it another try tonight. I would buy a cable that
is ready made but unfortuantely I need about 4 metres of flex.

    Bye for now,
    Barry.

TVs that have Scart sockets don't always have RGB circuitry, which
means that the RGB pins are not connected. The Scart connector also
has a video (composite) pin. TVs that don't have seperate RGB will
need to use this video pin.

This is true, Joe. The TV in question is a large Sony which has
two Scart inputs. One does not have connections to the RGB pins,
and the other one has three pins, one for red, one for blue and
one for green/green with sync. I'll try and post the full pinout
diagram in here and, maybe, someone can figure out the connections.

    Thanks,
    Barry.

See note 2937.16 for the Amiga to SCART connections. This lead
config will work for SCART 1 on the Sony but not for SCART 2. I
also have a Panasonic Video with a SCART socket but it doesn't have
    RGB.

The effect with SCART connection to the 27 in Sony is superb ..
especially with games like Falcon. I usually use a VR241 monitor
which actually has better definition but the 27" screen makes a
    great impact.

    Peter,
I dusted off the soldering iron and whipped up a cable but
still could not get a picture from SCART-1. Funny thing was, that
I could now get a very faint picture with the cable plugged into
SCART-2, but this had no colour. Maybe, this means that SCART-1
is knackered. Is there any way to tell? Any ideas?

Barry. (Who is getting seriously annoyed with SCART!)

PS. Did anybody ever find out what SCART means?

Well.... I got the plug on my SCART cable opened up recently, the one
I use between my Amiga and a Grundig P40-345 portable. The connections
are as follows..... BTW, it also has the PHONO plugs for audio.

    Scart Plug PHONO

Pin 2 Left Audio in ---------------- Left Audio (Phono)
Pin 4 Audio Screen ----------------- Audio Screen (Phono)
Pin 6 Right Audio in --------------- Right Audio (Phono)

    SCART 23 pin D-type

    Pin 8 A/V control (Anode--Cath)- +12 Pin 22 (via silicon diode-1N914)
    Pin 16 RGB control (Anode--Cath)- +12 Pin 22 (via silicon diode-1N914)
Pin 20 Video Input ------------ CSYNC Pin 10 (via 220 ohm res)
    Pin 7 Blue in --------------- A_BLUE Pin 5
    Pin 11 Green in ------------- A_GREEN Pin 4
    Pin 15 Red in ----------------- A_RED Pin 3
Pin 17 CVBS GND ----------------- GND Pin 17

Other pins not connected in this screened cable.

To the best of my knowledge, these signal names are correct.

Diodes are not of a special type.

    Hope this helps.........

    Thanks Tom,
The pin outs you gave worked great, apart from one change
that I made for my Sony which expects a smaller voltage
on pin 16, so I wired this pin to pin 23 on the amiga (+5V).
Thanks for vandalising your SCART to find out the pin-outs. I hope
    it fitted back together OK.

Ps. The display is now crystal clear and 100% more readable on text.
