3673.0. "Convert .SS to GIF / IFF?" by MSVAX::BARRETT (Have your people call my people) Fri Apr 13 1990 20:07

I recently obtained a large number of hires MSDOS photo files (VGA
I believe) that end in a ".SS" extension. I'd like to convert them
to GIF (then to IFF) so I can display them on the Ami. Anyone know
if and how this can be done?

    						Thanks

Getting back to this request; I have uploaded this picture files
and their viewer. Can anyone out there help me to convert them to
GIF - perhaps by an IBM PC screen capture method? Or better yet,
perhaps someone already has them in GIF or IFF format?

They are in MERIDN::$1$DUA4:[BARRETT.DOWNLOAD.AMIGA]SS.ARC and SS.LIS

    Thanks!

    John;

Were you able to get to them? Can you convert them?

Yes, I got to them but haven't had time to try converting them just yet.

Do you know what .SS format is?

I believe it stands for "Splash Canvas". The archive includes the
viewer and doc file. The files are common IBM displays (white mouse,
etc), so it's possible that someone may have them in IFF or GIF
    format already.

Real Nice pics. I couldn't convert them directly, but the PC program I'm
using (HiJaak) will allow screen capture's so I'll try that route.

I'm surprised HiJaak doesn't have .SS as one if the 20 or so formats it can
convert between...

Definetly worth getting into AMiga readable form...

Sounds good...glad they are good pics (not yet having seen them
myself). Let me know when they're done :-)

Feel free to use TAPE::USER2:[upload] and let everyone get to them.

you were right, those are common gifs

I just pulled them off of my disk pack, and put them in
    BAGELS::SCRATCH:[SCRATCH.BRANNON.G]*.*

Feel free to put them up on TAPE if you want to.

Thanks! I checked a couple and saw that they were the same pics,
so I'm gald to have them now. Perhaps John can confirm this; but
the quality of the GIF files is not as good as I remember the .SS files
being (probably due to GIF limitations and why the SS files have their
own viewer). Perhaps someone can come up with a way to convert them
into IFF file without quality loss, or make an SS viewer/converter for
the Amiga; then again, maybe I can get an A3000 for $50? ;-)

    Thanks Again for the pics!

good theory, but not so. The .SS files come from Splash which appears
to be a 320x200x256 color only paint program. Those .SS files are all
320x200x256. I believe Splash was one of the first paint programs
for that mode, so they invented their own picture format. GIF came
later and can handle much higher resolution pictures.

See previous notes about how much fun it is to convert from a 256 out
of 256,000 color picture to a 4096 out of 4096 color ham mode.
