3668.0. "F-29 Retaliator" by NACCEE::WILTSHIRE (Dave - NaC Conformance Eng.) Thu Apr 12 1990 11:25

    F-29 Retaliator, from Ocean Software, is the latest flight/combat
    simulator available for the Amiga.

    In many ways it falls between Falcon and Interceptor. However when it
    comes to out of the window graphics, it wins hands down !!!! The solid
    3-D objects (power stations, ships, buildings) seem to just glide
    by.............

    The game allows you to choose between two futuristic aircraft. When it
    comes to sitting in the cockpit, you have far less detail and controls
    than offered by Falcon and the plane is easier to handle. For example,
    I landed the F29 at my first attempt !!!

    Your can choose between four theatres of war (Arizona, Europe, Middle
    East and Pacific) and within each there are anything from 5-15 missions
    to undertake.

    The biggest problem I've found so far, is that if you crash there is no
    quick way back into the cockpit. This is even more true is you have a
    system with only one disk drive. F29 comes on 2 disks and both are
    needed before you can get your hands on the controls again !!!! This
    can be quite frustrating as you can crash even at the lowest rank......

    In my opinion Falcon is a more realistic flight simulation than F29
    (for example F29 has no ILS facility and I suspect the plane handles
    the same for all ranks). There's also no black box and you don't have
    the same variety of out of the cockpit views as Falcon (or even
    Interceptor for that matter).

    In summary, I don't believe F-29 takes Amiga flight simulators into a
    new dimension (as the hype would lead you to believe) but it is fun and
    would make a useful addition to your flight simulator collection.

3668.2Possible bug....EEMELI::LINDENThu Apr 12 1990 12:5816
    re:.0

    I've played the Retaliator couple of times, and I must agree that it
    has plenty of details in it. I've found some features that I don't
    like:

    	When flying and your altitude drops below 1000 feet(even few
    feets!!) there's quite a chance that you crash your plane and altimeter
    still showing over 500 feet......

    	Second one that I've founded was the perspective, it is quite
    disoriented sometimes.... Simply meaning when approaching ground/air
    targets you might collide with it, and the target looks to be much
    lower than your plane is....Not being in collision course.

3668.3Some more bugs ?NACCEE::WILTSHIREDave - NaC Conformance Eng.Thu Apr 12 1990 13:4320
    I also noticed a couple of problems with perspective.....

    The first instance was in the Pacific scenario when coming in to land.
    The power station appeared to be surrounded by water, then all of a
    sudden the land of air strip appeared out of nowhere !!!

    The other time was when I tried to bomb the destroyer. It appeared to
    jump and turn through 90 degrees in an instant.

    Another possible bug seems to appear if you fly off the end of the map.
    You are given a vector in order to return to the war zone, but you
    never seem to get anywhere. No detail appears i.e. bridges etc.,
    although according to the map you should be flying over things....

    F29 was due to be released before Christmas, but was delayed during
    Beta test and has only recently 'hit the streets'. I believe there's
    a few bugs left...........

3668.4I agreeKIRKTN::GAITKENHEADI'll buy that for a dollarFri Apr 13 1990 06:168
    I've noticed that when dog-fighting the MIG's have a tendancy to
    commit suicide by crashing into your plane. The only way to avoid this
    is to fly away from them which kinda defeats the purpose really.
    I also agree with the comments in the last few notes, but it's still a
    very fast and playable game.

3668.5buggy but funnyESTASI::MAZZOLAFri Apr 27 1990 12:3316
    If you exit from warzone a positive bug is a fuel consumption
    reset/lock.

    Unexplicable ground crash is perhaps explained: altimeter is set
    on sea level; ground is higher.

    A question: when in front engage if you dive end fire backwinder
    what happens ?
    What is the correct use of this weapon ?

    I find Falcon the greatest combat sim, but F29 is a great fun!

    P.s. In USA exists an amiga version of F15 strike Eagle II ?

3668.6Getting back at retaliatorAYOV27::CWILLMy sandwich is empty...Tue Jun 19 1990 12:3021
    Well I bought this last week and I am really enjoying it, even with
    aformentioned problems.

    I would like some tips on the following ;

    What's the best tactic, height, speed, weapons etc for taking on
    4+ bogies, I usually get 3 but by then Ive lost weapons and usually
    had turbine failure.

    How do you know you've got a lock on long range weaponary, at the
    momement I can only use short range, I don't wkow how to successfuly
    use the fire and forget missiles.

    Is it possible to refuel and re-arm or must you always complete
    each mission with 1 trip !.

    Regards,
        Major Chris

    P.S. Its great getting into a one on one dog-fight with only cannons
    left, until they employ the kamakazee tactics !!
3668.7Bogies shoot like mad!!!SHIRE::QUANWed Aug 08 1990 22:3821
    I bought the first release version of the F29, it was full of bugs e.g
    ennemy aircrafts tend to collide after a short dog-fight period, the
    extra fuel pod was not taken into consideration, tanks tend to
    auto-destroy, you can not view your missiles flying at the target... I
    brought back to the distributor and got it exchanged. The second
    version still contains a few bugs e.g the Autopilot does not work, the
    long range weaponries do not seem to work. But it is a great game.

    I am now reaching the final war situati for all the three scenarios.
    When dog-fighting, I used to fly at the maximun speed, on a head-on
    position, wait until the target become more visible, shoot 2 to 3 short
    range missiles at the same target, punch a few flares and break away.
    Each bogey at a time I managed to get 5 or 6 of them, sometimes I got
    to work with cannons.

3668.8Red EyeAYOV27::CWILLMy sandwich is empty...Thu Aug 23 1990 08:336
    Well I have now completed ( as of last night ) all 4 scenarios and
    scored 590,000 points + in the process, good game I enjoyed it and
    will probably play it again !!

    Regards,
        Col Chris.
3668.9"Mission" diskBRISCO::SYSTEMVery pooer. Very pooer indeed.Mon Nov 26 1990 14:4814
Ocean released a rather fun mission disk for F-29 which came out with
September's "Zero" magazine in the UK. It looks like an ordinary mission -
fight the villains off over the sea - but there was a twist...

SPOILER ALERT!

WHen you go on the second mission, to find the source of strange radio emanations,
you get into a dogfight with some klingon-like spacecraft over the sea...
it winds up with a plug for their Ocean's new spacefaring game, Epic.

Great fun!
