3657.0. "Ray tracing very fast on...." by LSNCSC::BLANC (Phil Lausanne-CH SSG DTN 753-2324 9-APR-1990 08:18) Mon Apr 09 1990 12:42

Hi
I have uploaded three files to use with uray from dave Wecker
couch.dat	-data file for uray
couch.txt	-what happenned
couch.ilbm	-the result

As you will sees it has a lot of waves, 2 spheres mirrors and a few other things

Read the .txt file, you will see it has taken only.... 168 seconds to produce
the output.
Guess on which machine..............

Yes on a decstation 5000......pfeuuuuu how this system is fast..

I just ran that ray tracing on my VAXstation 3100 and it took
1151 seconds! That was at about 80-90% capacity, so even if you
figure 1000 seconds min, the DECstation 5000 is still ~6 times
faster.

How fast will a 68030/68881 do it? Maybe I'll try my '20.
Anyone have a VAX 9000? :^)

    Pardon me for my ignorance ...

    But does this mean that I can create the 'raw data' on my amiga -
    upload this file to the VAX at work - ray trace the piccy using uray -
    and download the result back to my amiga ???????

    If so could someone be so kind to tell me what the program is called
    the creates the 'raw data' for you on the Amiga.

    Thanks Shaun.

The "raw data" file is just a text file...look at tape::user2:[upload]couch.dat

 If anyone wants the image in ILBM format (946 colors) then just give me
 a shout.

 for more information on what RayTracers are around or have been ported
 to VAX/Unix any other systems you could check out the notes conference

I ran it on my VS3900 (wjg) and it took 733.80 seconds - only 4.3 times slower
than a VS5000.... Looks like it's time to upgrade :-) ;-}

    So what do I need to view this on a workstation?

    I assume I need uray to run it, but can I just 'ave a look???

    ALSO, while I'm here.....

    Are there any GOOD PD programs around to allow you to ray trace and
    Gourard and Phong shade, texture etc etc?

    Are there any which can do this kinda stuff to, for example, DPaint II
    pictures?

    Cheers,
