3599.0. "PPage postscript problems" by ENOVAX::BARRETT (Of Optical Mice and Men...) Wed Mar 21 1990 14:08

I've tried for the first time to generate postscript from PPage 1.3 and
print it here at work. I generated a file that contained only text
samples (no graphics), but these samples were mostly composed of
special fonts (old english, ArtDeco, etc). My desire is to eventually
print a sheet of samples from all my fonts so I can use them for
    reference.

Needless to say I'm having problems.

I get an error something like "bad font or dictionary - offending
command is findfont". I've tried this on both LN03R and LPS printers.

Can I make this work - is the problem that I'm using unknown fonts?
If so, can't the PS file define them or something; or must I use
the supplied fonts in the printer? Would an IFF capture and an
IFF-to-PS conversion work (not an acceptable solution for me in the
    long run)?

The file can be found in ENOVAX::DISK$ENFIELD:[BARRETT]TEST.PS

It's a simple test page and doesn't contain anything impressive.

    					Thanks-in-advance

3599.1need PostScript fonts for PostScript printerSAUTER::SAUTERJohn SauterWed Mar 21 1990 16:1713
Yes, you are using unknown fonts. If I read your PostScript file
correctly, in addition to Times-Roman you are using gothic, oldenglish,
artdeco, data, circus, east and freeform fonts. These fonts do not
come with the LPS40 or LN03R (or any other PostScript printer that
I am aware of) so they must be loaded from the host. Since they
aren't loaded by the PPage 1.3 prologue, you will have to load them
    some other way.

The expectation is that if you want to use a font on a printer, you
must purchase the font for the printer.

How do you load these fonts into your home printer?

I think I understand what I can and can't do now (thanks for the EMAIL
responses). PPage and I believe the CG fonts disk are fonts I can use
to print on PS printers (correct me if I wrong about the CG fonts),
provided the printer supports the font or supplies a substitute. I
noticed that the Prolog in my postscript defined the HelveticaN and
other narrow fonts by resizing the standard ones - so those are
    useable.

The fonts I used that presented problems were AmigaDOS fonts that I
created PPage metrics files for - not realizing that they could not be
used in postscript. I'm told that in order to use fonts not defined in
the printer, I must supply the download.

Question 1:	Does anyone have a way to create download fonts for
AmigaDOS fonts? Does anyone have some that were already
    		done?

I went and produced the LN03R's "reset" sheet to grab a list of all
    valid fonts. Some I see I have - Some I don't - Some I have that aren't
in the LN03. I'm trying to locate the book so I can see samples of each
of these fonts. Some I'm not familiar with (SchoolHouse for example).

Question 2:	Does anyone have a "equivilancy" list or
recommendations for my substituting the DEC fonts for
    		PPage printouts?

I guess I'm going to have to do the IFF capture idea to get my AmigaDOS
    font sample sheets (sigh).

Am I correct in saying that the only real use for AmigaDOS fonts in
    PPage is for non-postscript printing?
