'Officially' they're MFM-types. But i know a lot of Amigos who use the
RD53 (Micropolis 1325) with RLL-controllers (include me). My tests with
RD52 and RLL are NEGATIVE (tons of format and r/w errors). So if you
can buy a cheap RLL-controller (Omti 5527/5528) and an
    Amiga-Bus-Adaptor-Thingy give it a try.

Did the RD53 have to be modified at all to run as RLL .

I thought that they were either one or the other. ??

This is very interesting as the RLL controllers are cheaper ??

If a disk has RLL-'capablities' depends on the quality of the disks
surface. RLL writes 24-27 sectors per track and there is an other
    encoding scheme.

I have an old (1984) Seagate ST-255 formatted with RLL (32 MB) with-
out any problems, and used it as a scratch disk sine 1/2 year with-
    out problems too.

In Germany an Omti 5520 (MFM-type) cost about 140,- DM, the 5527 (RLL)
is 160, and the 5528 (new RLL-modelOMs typically 180,- DM

If you have a RD53 give RLL a try (106 MB) i know a lot of collegues
who run them with RLL without problems.
