3567.0. "SCSI general questions" by GVA05::BERGMANS () Fri Mar 09 1990 13:07

I now have put A590 with 2Mb on my AMIGA 500.

The next step is to add a second drive through the SCSI port.

I never looked at SCSI drives before.

In which capacity do they come ?
    What prices ?
    Who are the vendors ?
Are they all powered +5 an +12 ?
Are they noisy (I hate noise..........) ?
    Where to buy them ?
Are they stand-alone desktop or do they need cabinets ?
What is the max flat cable lenght between controller and disks.

    Regards

Anything from 20 megabytes to 1.2 gigabytes

> What prices ?

In the US, figure around $10.00 per megabyte (40 meg for around $400 - usually
less)

> Who are the vendors ?

Pretty much the same as ST506, although many smaller vendors have fallen
behind/dropped out.

> Are they all powered +5 an +12 ?

Yes.

> Are they noisy (I hate noise..........) ?

Some.

> Where to buy them ?

Literally all over the world, but best vendors are in the US (no kidding!!)

> Are they stand-alone desktop or do they need cabinets ?

Yup! Seriously, by definition a drive itself requires an enclosure of
some kind. Unless, of course, your not picky about cables hanging about :-)

Actually you can get them either way. In general, buying a drive by itself
will require you to get additional hardware (controller, case, power supply
etc.) Many vendors sell packaged systems which include everything.

> What is the max flat cable lenght between controller and disks.

ANSI SCSI imposes a limit of 6 meters. DEC recommends (and uses) much less than
that. See apropriate specs at WJG::RZ$SPCES:
