3555.0. "la75 in compatible mode" by LSNCSC::BLANC (Phil Lausanne-CH SSG DTN 753-2324 7-MAR-1990 08:45) Wed Mar 07 1990 06:03

Hi,

What is the best driver to use with a LA75 in "other" (IBM proprinter) mode ?

With an Amiga , of course, and under WB 1.3.

Thanks

Phil

I set my LA75 up with the EpsonX[CBM_MPX-1250] driver on Extras1.3
    disk.

Beware if you use installprinter to do the job as it did not work
for me ( could not find Object). I think it tries to find ..._1250]
    instead of ...-1250].

If it fails for you, try:

    1.SYS>copy extras:devs/printers/EpsonX[CBM_MPX-1250] to devs/printers/

(This is from memory, so I could easily have got the CLI line wrong,
    but you get the idea!)

I use the CBM_MPS1000 (I may have left out a char), but it does work
    fine for graphics.

I have printed graphics successfully using the EpsonX driver from
    DPAINT without problems.

When I tried using the EpsonX_MPS-1250 driver my printouts were always
double spaced and before printing the printer would "recal" and print
out a couple of garbage characters.

I had the la75 in compatibility mode using Graphics set A, everything
else was defaulted. I'll try the CBM driver tonight. Any ideas on
whey the Epson driver would not work?

3555.6Mine double spaces as well1YUPPY::PEGLEYFri Mar 09 1990 10:318
Now you mention it, my LA75 is double spacing as well!

I thought it was just a matter of setting up the preferences for
single spacing, but I didn't try it.

I will have a little playabout with it this weekend.

I have a LA75P and use the CBM driver without problems...graphics
and text. I'm using the 1.2 driver and printer device tho. The
1.3 ones didn't work.

I'm using an LA75 (serial) and the V1.3 CBM driver and printerdevice.
The LA75 is in compatibility mode and text and graphics work fine. The
only problem I've encountered is that the LETTER QUALITY sw in PREFS
has no effect but thats no problem as the LA75 allows you to set it
    manually from the front panel.

       Randy,

I have a LA75P and it works fine with the 1.3 CBM driver when I
have the protocol set to OTHER. Funny you should be having
problems. What specifically didn't work for you with the 1.3
       drivers?

The printer would not print at all. I would get the check cable
requester. Everything is fine under 1.2 so I don't plan to spend
several more hours trying to figure out why 1.3 didn't work.

(I'm actually using an early version of 1.3 that was released
with Professional Page. The AmigaDos 1.3 from Commodore was the
one that I couldn't get to work.)

What is compatibility mode? It the CBM_MS1000 driver likely to
    work with a LA50 also?

    Re: .12

Not likely - The LA75 has the capability to run in IBM ProPrinter
compatibility mode. This is what the CBM_MS1000 driver is writing to.

3555.14Double spacing done by LA75...ATLV5::MCDONALD_JSurly to bed, surly to rise...Wed Apr 04 1990 14:0411
Sorry this reply's so late. I haven't had much time to keep up with
    notes lately.

I noticed a couple of replies which mentioned that LA75's in
compatibility mode were double spacing printouts. I had the same
problem, but went into the setup on my LA75 and turned off the
automatic LF on CR setting. That cleared up the double spacing problem
    quite nicely.

....and what settings should the LA 75 itself be set to ?
i.e. baud rate, number of bits, parity, etc. or is all this part of
the definition of "compatability mode" and therefore automatic ?

3555.16Compendium of LA75 info?AISG::LANDINGHAMGuy M., DLB5-3/E5, 291-9268Tue Feb 05 1991 19:2728
I really hate to beat a dead horse, but...

Could some kind soul please post a summary of the setup to use an LA75 with WB
1.3? I've read the myriad of notes on the subject but can't seem to piece
together all the tidbits. It would be really useful to have it all in one
place.

I'm thinking of things like:

	- Driver used
	- Preferences setup
	- LA75 setup (including any DIP switches)

I've never been able to get rid of the following problems:

- the LA75 prints too much blank space between lines; it's almost as if some
part of the printer driver is sending an incorrect code which sets the linefeed
to about 1/2 inch; sometimes it seems like the driver is sending an initial
reset to the printer which is causing this, because if I cycle the power to the
printer after the first printout, it then spaces normally (until some program
tries to change some print parameter, which causes another reset to be sent?)

- the LA75 won't underline characters nor print the underscore...I have a
suspicion that somewhere in the Workbench->driver->printer loop 1 bit of data is
getting lost. Perhaps because I have a printer DIP switch set incorrectly?

Thanks very much.

I noticed this topic ends up with a question which nobody has answered.
So being a tidy person here goes.

I assume that we have connected our LA75 to the serial port with an
    appropriate cable.

    Using WB 1.3 & 1.3 Printer.Device. 26964 16-Nov-89
Instal Printer Driver EpsonX[CBM_MPS-1250] 7000 06-Sep-88 (You will need
to do this from CLI as noted in a previous reply) It can be found on the
    1.3 Extras disk.

    Preferences
    Change Serial to
Baud Rate 9600 Buffer Size 512
Read Bits 8 Write Bits 8
    Stop bits 1 Parity None
    HandShaking xON/xOFF

    Ensure Serial Port Selected
    EpsonX Driver Selected
Select Paper Size and Type according to the paper you are using. I used
    12 inch Fan Fold.
Paper Size Custom	Paper Type Fanfold
    Length 72 lines Quality Letter
    Pitch 10-Pica	Spacing 6 LPI

Graphic 1 Accept the defaults but ensure shade is set to Black &
    White.
    Graphic 2 Accept the defaults.

Now the LA75 Set Up (These are set up from the front panel see Pocket
Service Guide or other LA75 Documetnation)

     Feature Value
1 Baud Rate 8 9600 (Must agree with preferences)
     2 Data Bits & Parity 7 8-None
     3 Protocol 2 Other
     4 Form Length 1 12 inches
5 Character Set (DEC) 2 Great Britain (Select your own)
6 Supplemental Character Set (DEC) 1 DEC Supplemental
7 Print Density (DEC) 2 Memo
     8 Printer ID (DEC) 1 LA50 ID
9 Text Mode Right Margin (DEC) 1 Truncate
10 Auto LF on CR (DEC) 2 No auto LF
11 Auto CR on LF (DEC) 2 No auto CR
12 CAN Control Code (DEC) 1 Cancel Control Functions
    13 80 or 132 Columns (DEC) 1 80 Columns
14 Paper Out Bell (Emulation) 2 On
15 Slashed Zero (Emulation) 1 Zero with Slash
16 Auto LF on CR (Emulation) 2 No auto LF
17 Active Character Set (Emulation) 1 Graphics Set A
18 Auto CR on LF (Emulation) 2 No auto CR
19 Power-up Density (Emulation) 2 LQ or NLQ
20 LQ or NLQ (Emulation) 2 Select LQ

Once you have set the protocol to OTHER (IBM Emulation) then the
parameters labled (DEC) are not important. the ones to be careful
    with are the (Emulation) ones.

Having done all this and it doesn't work I'll say the usual discalimer
IT WORKED FOR ME. One interesting fact emerged when I was configuring
my printer. I like others before me got double line spacing for
documents I was printing. Frantically searching this notes conference
and rechecking the configuration did not reveal anything abnormal. So
what was the problem? The answer may explain the random nature of this
problem as explained in previous notes. Many of us obtain documentation
with PD programs which we download. we have no idea of how this
documentation was produced and with what text editor or WP package.
If you experience this problem run the documentation through your
favourite WP package (I use PROTEXT) If possible get the WP package to
display the escape codes. I found several at the front of my document
which when deleted got rid of the double line spacing.

It's not rocket science but if it helps configure your LA75 with the
minimum of heartache then I'm happy.
