3481.0. "Cheap Floppy Disks" by CIMNET::KYZIVAT (Paul Kyzivat) Wed Feb 14 1990 23:07

I just discovered what seems to be a great buy in blank floppies.

I received an ad from Software Excitement. They mostly sell disks with
PD software, but also sell blank disks. The listed priced were good so
I called, and learned that there was a sale, lowering the prices
    further:

	Quantity	10	25	50	100	500

	Reg Price/each	1.05	.99	.95	.89	???
	Sale Price	.99	.85	.79	.75	.69

These are for Sony DS/DD. Catalog offers only blue, but I was told
they can be had in Red, Yellow, Blue, Green, and Orange, or mixed.

Regular shipping via UPS is no charge, and you can order on their dime:
	1-800-444-5457

I forgot to ask when the sale ends.

I haven't received anything yet, so I can't vouch for the place, but
the person who answered the phone was VERY nice and efficient. She
told me her name was Valery, and that she gets a commission on these
sales, so others who read this should ask for her.

I certainly don't know how to beat $39.50 for 50 Sony disks delivered
    to my door!

3481.2Data Direct $0.62/100 Sony floppiesMSHRMS::GOGUENThu Feb 15 1990 11:3310
Just purchased 100 Sony Disk ("marked" Sony DSDD) from Data Direct in
Needham, MA. Heard about them from another note in this notes file.
They are a distributor of Sony. The price I got was $0.62 per 100. I
beleive you must by in quantities of 100. They wouldn't take a credit
card, so I ended up having them sent C.O.D. The extra shipping brought
the price to $69.00, so I ended up paying $0.69 per floppy. Still a
great buy! There number is (617) 444-9290.

I don't believe you'll ever get the disks marked "SONY" or for that
matter any other brand if you buy in bulk (50 or 100 lots). When you
buy bulk you must TRUST your supplier. However, when you buy lots
of 100 from a place like data direct, they come in a larger Sony box
containing 2 plain white boxes (50 disks in each).

Disks which have the vendor name silk screened on them are called
"branded" rather than "bulk" and they cost 30-50% more. Many
distributors don't even carry these. If you ever buy "bulk" and
receive "branded", you got lucky because the guy probably ran out
of plain ones and gave you the others at no extra charge.

You'll also notice (with Sony, and perhaps others) that they may
or may not have the "Made In Japan" stamp on the back. Most Sony
bulk disks these days say "Parts made in Japan, assembled in Mexico".
These DO NOT have the "Made In Japan" stamp on the back. It was
explained to me by Sony that there are very strict trade rules as
to when the a product can carry the "Made In Japan" stamp.

KAO is building (maybe it's already in operation) a huge media
production facility in Plymouth, Mass. From various quality
reports they produce an excellent product and I'm told one of
their goals is to become the leading US supplier of 3.5" product.

I can recommend the use of unbranded 3.5" DS/DD diskettes from
MEI Micro Center. Why pay for Sony, I've used lots of these with
no problems. These disks are made in the U.S.A.

Price is $.45 each in lots of 25. <-- Lowest price I've seen
Shipping cost is $.50 per 25
add $3.00 handling fee per order.
No charge for VISA or Master Card

MEI is rated Best Buy in Computer Shopper

I second the use of MEI floppies. I've probably used over 100 of them
with maybe 1 or 2 bad disks. On 1 occasion, I even got my floppies in
the white Sony box described in a previous note...

You are absolutely correct! The sony disk I bought in bulk are NOT marked
with "SONY" on the disk. What I was remembering (as marked) was the
packaging list, it clearly stated I had bought Sony DSDD. Sorry for the mis-
information.

I just called Data Direct in Needham, MA about their bulk Sony's. I spoke
with a Al Mecuri. He indicated Sony had just dropped their price and he
is selling them for 0.52 a piece in 100 quantity. He has blue, grey, black,
white in stock and the price includes labels.
