3382.0. "VR241 Problem" by BELFST::MCCLINTOCK (Peter) Tue Jan 23 1990 20:58

Today I brought home a VR241 monitor from the office with the
intention of using it for both a Rainbow and my Amige at home.

Things, however, haven't worked out so well...

I have wired up the Amiga to 4 x BNC plugs as described in note
550 or 2105 ... even used separate grounds for each of the signals.

When plugged in and switched on the display appears to lack sync.
There are 3 or four flickering images on the screen. Having checked
out my connections to ensure that they are absolutely correct, and also
the switches on the VR241 (external sync etc.) with no improvement I
decided to see how the monitor worked on the Rainbow.

After connecting it in place of the monochrome display I found
exactly the same problem as the Amiga. However, I was able to
fix the problem and get a perfect display by changing the Rainbow
Setup to 60 Hz instead of 50 Hz.

This really puzzels me! This is the UK - 240V 50 Hz why should
the monitor only work when getting a signal based on 60 Hz? And
is there anything I can do with the Amiga to get it to work.

Just in case it provides any clues the Monitor is a VR241-A and
claims on the back to work 50/60 Hz 100-110/220-240 V.

A colleague in the office uses an Amiga connected to a Barco
display using a similar lead so I will borrow his as a further
check on the wiring. In the meantime if anyone has any bright
ideas I sure would appreciate them.

    Hi Peter,

I successully use a VR241 at home. Here we have 240V/50Hz as well and I
    have had no problems.

My first guess would be that the sync line is not wired properly and/or
the monitor is not switched to external sync. However it sounds like
you've already checked the switch, so the more likely culprit is the
    cable ??

I have just tried a friend's cable and it gives identical results to
mine. When I get the time I will exchange my VR241 for another one and
see if it works any better.

I changed the VR241 for a different one (older actually) and it
works great. I'll ask Customer Services to check out the first
one when I take it back to the office.

Now, having got over that hurdle ...

What are the adjustments that I can make to the monitor to increase
the picture area and, is there any useful software that I can use
to get a larger workbench etc. area.

3382.5Vsize and Hsize adjustments are inside the cover...CGOFS::CADAMSClint Adams - Calgary, CanadaMon Jan 29 1990 18:1216
I started usinig a VR241 a while ago after my 1084 quit (the green gun
went crazy and now no display).

I took the VR241's cover off and found the Vsize and Hsize adjustments.
I think I adjusted them all the way in both directions. I then got a
hold of a preferences repalcement calle PPref10 that lets you specify
your Workbench size (ala Morerows). I run a 740 by 230 Workbench.

All in all it worked out pretty good, the color and the contrast on the
VR241 are better than the 1084 and the flicker (for me anyway) is no
    worse.

If I ever do get the 1084 fixed i'll probably sell it and put the
    proceeds toward more memory.

I never tried to adjust the vertical and horizontal sizes.

I have been using morerows bascially since I had the machine. It's kind
of odd when I see an Amiga screen that looks smaller.

3382.7For those following this path...WOTVAX::GILLILANDPPhilip GillilandThu Jul 11 1991 14:2611
This note is for those who may be attempting to solve VR241 problems, and are
reading through these notes in search of an answer. The solution to the problem
in .0 is almost certainly vertical hold adjustment. As stated somewhere in topic
550, the focus and v/hold will usually need adjusting. I had to make adjustments
to every single control on mine as the colour balance was completely wrong. If
you fancy having a go yourself, you'll need the pocket service guide for the
procedure. Also, be careful, there are plenty of lethal voltages inside this
monitor. Alternatively, approach one of your friendly terminals engineers; I'm
sure he/she'll do it for you for a small fee!
